Hello guys! In today's video we're going to be swapping out the god-awful "ClickPad" that plagued all Haswell ThinkPads with the T450 touchpad, bringing back dedicated buttons to the TrackPoint and also returning to a more traditional touchpad. In addition, we will be swapping out the 1366x768 TN panel for a beautiful 1080p IPS display! Be sure to stay tuned for Part 2 where we make even more upgrades to this machine!

Recently replaced the TN panel on my T450s and it really makes a difference. I wish they would stop selling those things already; It's sad that even the 2018 models can be configured with 1366x768 TN panels.

But better for privacy with those smaller viewing angle of the TN panels. My reason to skip the replacement, or i mudst have rl proof that those screen stickers actually work to make the screen black above certain viewing angles

Thanks for the info! Did the touchpad mod on my T431s, and it works! Only issue is that updating windows broke the driver, but I was able to reinstall it.

I'm using Thinkpad T440p quad core cpu with Mac OS Sierra running on it. Very powerful and stable :D. I also upgraded to this Full HD IPS panel: LP140WF3-SPD1.

My T440p did not come with the integrated camera, so I installed one and it is not working. I have tried numerous driver updates and reinstalled WIN 10 and it still is not working. I am in school and I really need the camera for virtual classes. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks

Hello, nice job on doing these videos. I currently have a T440p with a HD+ display and I was wondering if the same display you bought will work for me. Can you please tell me if there's a list of components to be upgraded, based on machine type number? Keep up the good work !

Any 14” 1080p display that works with the T440p will work. Somewhere there’s a list of panels that will work, but people always seem to find ones that work for them.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE.. For the trackpad you must install the Synaptics ULTRANAV Driver the regular synaptics and the alps driver makes it go nuts this one works perfect..

Get a couple of "sticky feet", to put on the top of your display bezel, so any pressure on the lid, doesn't result in scratching your display for this "upgrade". Personally, I LIKE the "ClunkPad" better than the typical touchpad, and it works just fine with the trackpoint. Just need how to learn to use it properly.

I Just pulled the trigger on a T450 trackpad for 11€, I upgraded almost everything else in my T440p (512GB SSD, i7 4810mq, 16GB RAM, 1080p IPS, US Backlit Keyboard) and really can't stand the clunkpad anymore!

Absolutely. Not only is the 1080p display a higher resolution, but it is an IPS panel as opposed to the 900p being a TN panel. IPS panels have better colors, contrast, and viewing angles.

Would have been really nice if you could have shown a comparison between the old HD panel and the new FHD panel, i just got a used and really nice t540p, my budget allows me to do some major upgrades and i was hoping that i can also upgrade the panel :)

@@julianmunoz8829 The T440 (non-s) was never available with a 1080p touchscreen. If you can separate the screen and digitizer from a T440s display assembly, it *could* be possible to transplant it into a T440, however I don't know if this was ever attempted. You'd be better off just getting a T440s with it, as I don't think there's any compromises between the two like there is with the T450 vs T450s.

There's a *lot* of options out there. Some people will tell you to get specific panels, but to my eyes any IPS panel is an improvement, so as long as it's a 14" 30-pin EDP display it will probably work in the T440p.

To be fair, I didn't mind the missing buttons so much (never a trackpoint user myself), but the trackpad itself was really horrible. Replaced it with the T450 model and it's so much better.

for replacing the screen - is it any different if you have the 1600x900 tn panel? I haven't seen anywhere that suggests it is but I don't want to have to buy a different cable just to get the 1080p screen to work.

I have replaced 768p and 900p panels with the 1080p screen several times without any problems on the T440p. The same may not be true with some older models.

@@SebisRandomTech thanks. I just replaced my 900p screen with a 1080p screen and the hardest part was getting the tiny screws back in because my screwdriver apparently wasn’t magnetic enough. Today I’m putting in the backlit keyboard

I don't care about the trackpad and actually, I do like my x220 keyboard better, but the t440p keyboard has it's good points too .. all I'd do is to add at least 8 gigs of RAM , preferable in one single slot. add r place the HDD with a SSD and think about the display as I'm frequently using external monitors .. Let me add that this channel is the best and most comprehensive on thinkpads upgrades on RU-vid.

Appreciate the compliment! The X220 keyboard is by far superior, but the T440p is still a very solid machine, especially after swapping in the T450 touchpad and putting in an IPS display. The GT730M is also still reasonable for some light gaming.

Well, since I was watching this video and thinking on upgrading the display at some point, I wonder if you know both the LTN140HL02 and the B140HAN01.3, like, having both side by side for comparison.. even if you've never had the opportunity of a side by side comparison, maybe you've heard opinions about them .. in case of choosing one or another which one would you get ?

@@vgfxworks Honestly I just play the gamble with displays on those, the T440p doesn't have a display whitelist so you can use any 14" eDP display really, and I've had good enough luck with whatever cheap FHD IPS panel I stumble across on eBay. Others will have varying results but I've just been constantly lucky. For the X240, X250, T450/s, T550, and W550s, you *do* need exact parts for the panels since Lenovo uses a display whitelist on those models.

Wow i love your videos, im gonna become a thinkpad owner now, been looking for a portable laptop to have in my car for tuning and diagnostics. :) can a 1080p FHD display be added to an x230? and also, would you ever to a video sereis on the x100 series Thinkpads, the 10 inch models?

If I get my hands on a few X100 series then maybe. The X230 CAN be modded to have a 1080p screen, but you need an adapter board and good soldering skills to do it.

SWEET! my only concern is i'd like the classic keyboard of the x220t over the performance and USB 3.0 of the x230t... can the x230t have the x220t's keyboard and palm rest swapped in?

Sebi, when I was installing the new panel I lost a screw. Do you know where I can find replacement screws? It was one of the 4 screws you told me to take off. It's a M2 x 3mm screw.

You can get replacement screw kits on eBay. Seems excessive if you lost just one screw but it can be handy to have spares especially if you work on a lot of these.

@Sebi's Random Tech. I also have T440p with t450s touchpad. On ChromeOS and on linux 2 finger scroll works perfect, on Windows 10 doesn't work. Did You have 100% working solution for this? I will try now driver from Your link but I think I will still have this problem. Thanks!

Yes you can, however the front bezel is essentially a sticker so you will have to either be extremely careful with removing the bezel or purchase a replacement bezel along with a new screen. Otherwise it's a fairly simple upgrade.

Recently picked up a used T440p. A very basic one it seems, with a 1366x768 screen, small amount of storage, and 8Gb RAM. But holy shit you weren't kidding about the touchpad. It's godawful.

I don’t really have one specific seller that has given me better luck than others. I’ve only had a few negative experiences with eBay sellers, my best advice would be to only buy from someone who has at least 97% positive ratings and has a lot of experience with sales. The more sales, and positive reviews to go along with them, the more reputable the seller likely is.

Does the T450 trackpad still "click", or does it only allow tapping to click?

Yes, it still clicks. The major difference is it's much more subtle than the T440 touchpad, which has a LOT of travel in its clicks. Also, the T450 touchpad uses a more traditional hinge design, so the bottom clicks more than the top, whereas in the T440 touchpad the entire button clicks.

A question: i want to buy a thinkpad for programming. Want something fast with a lot of space . I see good deals for used thinkpads but thinkpads screens are a bit "bland". So replacing the screen can fix the issue ?

Many of these older machines came with low quality TN panels with lower resolutions (1366x768, 1600x900), but in the case of the T440p and most newer ThinkPads, it can easily be upgraded to a FHD IPS panel that has better image quality and a higher resolution.

I usually just take a gamble on eBay or sometimes Amazon. Hard to find genuine 1080p panels (aftermarket ones work fine but some care more about getting a particular panel more than others) but I otherwise haven't had that many issues with buying off there. Sometimes someone will post some parts for sale in r/thinkpadsforsale or the thinkpads.com forum's marketplace.

Hi Sebi. I recently bought a new LCD FHD screen (04X5916 LG PHILIPS LP140WF3-SPD1) for my T440p and I’ve run into some problems. Whenever I start up the laptop the screen works fine until a few seconds when it slowly fades to black. When this happens, everything else still runs, its just the screen that malfunctions. This doesn’t happen with the previous screen that came with the laptop. Using the old screen, I updated the graphics drivers and changed the memory allocation for the display to 512mb in BIOS, but when I reinstalled the new screen, I ran into the same problem. What do you think could be the problem? Any solutions? I’d really appreciate any of ur computer wisdom.

@@SebisRandomTech I returned it. It turns out the panel I bought was an offbrand made specifically for another type of laptop. (lol I should have read the ebay description instead of just the panel number). I bought the right panel and everything works beautifly.

Hey man, great video! now my question is this, i have a Lenovo T440s (TP00049A) with the crappy mousepad and the crappy dipsplay. I have also Backlight keyboard but no fingerprint reader. My display is NOT HD! (max resolution at display settings is 1600x900.) If i swap to the 1080p monitor, will it work?? Because on the link you provided for the display, at the prescription says that "so please make sure your original screen is eDP 30 Pins and 1920x1080, otherwise it will not work!" Please advise

The 1080p screen will work fine. I don’t know why they always say to change out the cable, I have changed many screens from 1366x768 to 1080p and never had to change the cable.

Thanks for this! I've just purchased a second hand machine I was wondering is it possible to actually replace the shell: the rear cover, the base cover and the palmrest with new parts so as to make the laptop look brand new. I haven't seen anyone try this so I was just wondering

Of course you can, all of those parts can be replaced. Just have to be patient and not lose any screws along the way.

Well just did the last upgrade .. The touchpad.. I have a ques.. Can the touchpad be installed upside down so that the right and left clickers are where most trackpads are on the bottom instead of the top..

The whole purpose of the buttons is for use with the TrackPoint (the red dot between the G, H, and B keys). It probably won't fit but feel free to give it a try.

Hey. Anyone know if the backlit keyboard is still essentially the same keyboard (in terms of travel etc) other than the fact that it is backlit....or is it a totally different typing experience?!

The keycaps have a smoother texture than those on the non-backlit keyboard. I’ve heard a few people say it’s a little bit mushier but I would say the travel and actuation is about the same.

Generally, if the metal plate on the bottom side of the touchpad has dots, it's a Synaptics, and if it's flat, it's an Alps. Sometimes there are aftermarket ones that break this rule, but I did a video explaining how to get both versions working properly.

@@SebisRandomTech The monitor turns off immediately to the BIOS. Only once did I manage to use it and it didn't shut down. At this point I guess it's a display problem. I proceeded to return it even though the seller told me it could be a problem with the cable. I don't think so since the factory display works properly. Now I have bought this: Lenovo ThinkPad IPS LED Display FRU 04X5916 LP140WF3-SPD1 14,0" FHD matt

You would have to use an *X250* touchpad. Technically the screen is already "HD" at 1366x768, but you can do a Full HD upgrade, which I have done a video on.

I upgraded the screen on my t440p. The ebay listing said 1080p IPS FHD, and after I installed , its basically the same awful color changing & bad viewing angles :( ... I asked another seller with IPS FHD screen for t440p 20AW-0046US and told me his screens wont work either because my "laptop is not picking EDID" - Do I have wrong screen?

@@SebisRandomTech Come to find out the original seller sent me the wrong screen! Their listing said 1080p IPS FHD but didnt have in stock so they just sent something. I ended up going to laptopscreen.com ebay page and talked to someone there and ordered the right screen.

You have to first get a 1080p conversion kit online. 1080p screens are not compatible with the T430 without such a kit.

It is very hard to put 1080p in T430, because you must done some modifications. Better to look for T440 or newer with IPS compatibility. IPS is awesome. It is like day and night.

If you have 30 pin display in your laptop you can swap it with any 30 pin display. Manufacturers use generic connectors and display sizes and dimensions. For example you can fit display from broken HP laptop into Lenovo. If it has the same amount of pins.

Depends on the specific panel that you get, some are better than others but any of the IPS panels for the T440p will yield better results than the stock TN panels, which have horrible color reproduction.

I was here for the touchpad replacementpart and it's not good. The tape placement is really important and its position is very easy to miss while detaching palmrest (with the touchpad). It slides underneath the frame in a specific manner. I wish that was mentioned.

I dont think that link is a Synaptics anymore .. After install it works for about 5 seconds then mouse disappears.. And yes I install the synaptics drivers and also tried it with alps driver.. Maybe I just got a bad one..

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE.. For the trackpad you must install the Synaptics ULTRANAV Driver the regular synaptics and the alps driver makes it go nuts this one works perfect..

Considering I made this video a year ago, I don't really remember. But the buttons and scrolling worked correctly, and I remember making sure it was a synaptics pad.

If it works on Windows, 99% sure it's likely synaptics. Alps works on Linux but has driver issues on Windows.

T460 it should be fine. T450s may have a display whitelist preventing aftermarket screens from working, but this may have been removed with a recent BIOS update (yet to be officially confirmed).
