my T480s will arrive next week. 1st time user of Thinkpad coming from Macbook pro user of 10yrs. Any tips you can give that I need to configure or setup after I unbox it?
@@MrMosoani Welcome to the world outside of the Macintosh borders! I would say maybe go into UEFI/BIOS and navigate to the Security Tab and I/O Port Access to make sure everything you need is activated. Other than that, try to go for at least 16GB RAM. Have fun.
How were the CPU temps under full load? I own a t480s with the exact same configuration as you, but my performance in games has been significantly worse for some reason? Great video, btw :3
I am planning to buy a T480S with 16 GB of Ram and 512 GB SSD. I am only going to use it for the office packages and for Autocad 2021, I think it is advisable to buy it as they tell me, because my budget is short.
God bless you, you saved me. I was looking for videos for this ThinkPad laptop, and I did not find any detailed and useful review about this in the Arabic content, where I live. I appreciate your effort and saying thank you is not enough for your effort
@HaisteComputerRepair A nice review! As far as I myself use one T480s/16G/i5 8250U, but still running Windows 10 Pro, I'm in doubts if I have to go for Windows 11 Pro. You probably have also expiriance with this machine running Windows 10 - do you think under Windows 11 it is able to make the same battery life and the same performance?
I would say you can pick either 10 or 11 and not have too much to worry about. I have been running Windows 11 on a T480s as a daily driver for close to a year and it runs quite nice. I upgraded to 40GB of RAM just for fun, so that helps.
@@HaisteComputerRepair Thank you for the answer! What make me doubt is some report according to which Windows 11 make about 20% - 30% less battery life with same other conditions.
Hello do you think lenovo thinkpad i7 8650u - 16 gb ram - 512 ssd for 250 euro is good and worth it for 2024. IM a computer engineering student and want to use it for programing and learning and installing other programs to use
I recently bought a T480 (not s) - almost the same CPU(i7-8550U), 32GB Ram and no storage for 200$. I bought it locally(Egypt) but local prices tend to match the global market so I think the price is okay. I can open up lots of taps, code and use vms, no problem. however, it's a laptop, so any sustained load will cause it to clock down, it never goes under base clock but unlike my desktop, It can rarely stay at max turbo (I never really used laptops so this was new to me) So, I think that if you don't plan on gaming or doing anything computationally difficult then it'll serve you just as good as any new laptop.
Does the i5-8530U have a significant performance than the i5-8250U? Both have 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD but the i5-8530U is $27 more expensive. Is the i5-8530U worth it or should I just go with the i5-8250U?
would have loved to seen a comparison using the same games before and after the upgrade to get a feel for how much of an improvement was made. I still a great video
I agree, but only so much time in my schedule. If you want to check out the video I did with the T480s with 40GB RAM, NVIDIA MX150, and i7 CPU here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MJiXJKQVcNc.htmlsi=LXIsyHoLyYOmGDq_
Thank you for the video. I looked on some marketplace sites for second-hand laptop shopping and found a T480s with a Core i5-8250U instead of i5-8350U like in your video, do you think the 8350U gives significant performance improvement over the 8250U or is there any difference at all between the two?
@@HaisteComputerRepair what about the Core i5-8365U in the T490? I thought the difference was only in the clock speed but then I found out it came from a newer 'Lake' (idk what this is), the 8365U comes from Whiskey Lake while the 8250U/8350U comes from Kaby Lake. What does it mean?
The different "lakes" refers to a different generation (or in this case, revision) in CPU. An i5 8365u will outperform an i5 8350u by a little bit (check benchmarks). In my experience, what matters a lot too is how good the CPU cooler is, since thermal throttling can really harm performance. For example I had a T480s with an i5 8350u which outperformed an i7 8550u in an x380 simply because of the better heatsink in the T480s.
yeah go ahead! i have DaVinci installed on my T480s, all you need to do is just keep the resolution of videos simple (1080p) and you will be alright! although the t480s may get a little hot while running it.
I have been using a T480s as daily driver for work for almost two years and I honestly don't have a reason to change. As for WWAN cards (antennae should be there already) if you need it then you already know it's worth it.
@@Just-a-bad-content-creator For the T480, just an SSD with the capacity you need and at least 16GB RAM. Look for one with a 1920x1080 panel, the quality is much better than 1366x768.
Battery life is not a guarantee when buying used. But, there are third party batteries should you need to purchase one. Ideally, you would get approx 57Wh. Can you tell me what the prices are for the ones you are looking at? I sold them and will be selling more at about $340 CAD right now.
Im interested in this laptop, can you tell me how long the battery last? I live in a country where we lost the electric service for hours and i work from home, so it's important if it can actually work for me
Well, with any used laptop you must manage expectations and test out. Or have a good conversation with a seller. Lithium batteries will lose their charge over time, either way. Sometimes you get luck and sometimes you don't. Third party batteries are always an option. Should be 57Wh.
I have the same laptop with the same specs, it lasts for 6 hours. If you want a laptop which will last longer, get the Thinkpad t480, it has two batteries.
i have the same laptop but my cpu draws over 50 watts of power and the laptop immidiatly throttles i get upto 120 fps in fortnite with the igpu then it drops to 10-20 cuz of thermal throtteling what do i do here
Have you tried charging it with powerbank? If yes, which one. I’ve tried Baseus Adaman 65w 2000mAh and it (powerbank)charges the laptop only at 5V while actually needs 20v
Hm, any chance you could test l4d2 fully? Because usually it's full of gunshots and ragdolls, gore and all that, if you do and it has good performance, I am sold on this laptop
@@HaisteComputerRepair Considering it goes 90+ FPS (with high settings) in some areas in crash course, it's probably safe to say so, even then I could turn off the gore and ragdolls so, thanks for testing the game! (even if it's for a bit) I'm still wondering why this laptop has better performance than my pc 😅
@@eunaodissenada6047 It's a great laptop for general use and work tasks. I used one this last year as a daily driver. Gaming will have to be on the low end, but you might have already expected that.
Yes but that is expanding beyond what is listed in the product specifications and I do not have a 32GB stick to test this out. So, unless you can say with certainty and experience of doing this it becomes potentially misleading. Have you done this with a T480s?
@@HaisteComputerRepair I see and that is much appreciated for being responsible to your viewers. Please allow me to clarify: Yes I have tested it out (I did it literally on Sunday September 3rd, 2023, which is very close to your time of this video publication, as I have just purchased a T480s from refurbished Amazon store with i5-8350U.) I have swapped out the 8GB RAM that came with it for a 32GB Corsair Vengeance. In my Windows 10 Pro "This PC" -> "Property" it is showing Installed RAM 40.0 GB (39.9 GB usable). I have also changed my SSD from 512GB to 2TB 990 Pro and this is probably a bad idea as my system is running hotter than before (I stress tested the SSD and the SSD reached 61 deg C steady state in an ambient temperature of around 28 deg C so I guess that is still okay but I am burning extra power for a PCIE4 SSD in a PCIE3 slot...). Thanks! 🙂
@@bradliu3399Awesome, well thank you for contributing the knowledge! Now I know for sure and I can pass the info on to customers etc. Those are some warm temps for the SSD, but who knows maybe that's normal. I also have a T480s as daily driver (with the NVIDIA MX150 GPU), so I can run HWMonitor to see how warm my Kingston NV2 NVMe SSD is getting.
@@HaisteComputerRepair Thank you for your video. I came by to watch your video to see your take on the laptop to help me determine if it was a good purchase or if I should return it. :)
@@MMABeijing nah it’s fine for regular work. Browsing and Word documents. I’ve gotten a 32-gig i7-8700 PC since then, which alleviated my need for a powerful laptop. And the thermals on a PC are infinitely better. No Boilerplate had a wonderful video on that subject “The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Linux Workstations.” Basically he said that PC’s are much cheaper and more performant than any laptop because they can actually fit coolers larger than an inch or two. So stick to sleek, low-powered laptops for convenience and mobility and only access powerful, stationary computers if you need performance.
@@HaisteComputerRepair just scored a t480 with the i5 8th gen for £47! only problem is that it is stuck in sleep mode, but that can be easily fixed via the emergency reset hole
Im thinking about buying a t480 or a t480s. The Focus would be rather to use it for dualboot linux, Programming and so on. What would you guys choose? Because i have Seen that where i live The t480s are somehow cheaper then The t480. So my question would be what would you choose and why?
Hello! Thanks for the review, I would like to ask if it can run Valorant? As its the only game I consistently play and I am planning to switch from PC to laptop because of the mobility it provides
It would, but at lower resolution and lower settings. If you look for a laptop with a dedicated GPU this will benefit you greatly. This will of course be more money, but if your main goal is gaming, even with Valorant, it will help to have the added power.
@@DripChan9081 You're limited to light gaming. Any higher end titles may be able to run at lowered resolution and lowered settings, but that's really dependent on what you want to play.
thanks for the review, i want to bay one thinkpad. the L470 6th vs t470s vs t480s. of corse the L470 is the cheeper one but I'd like one laptop who work for next 3 years. could you help for the best choice ?
@@belevia3420 Looks like the integrated graphics will be the weak spot, but also looks playable: www.pcgamebenchmark.com/genshin-impact-system-requirements Valorant no problem seemingly: www.pcgamebenchmark.com/valorant-system-requirements
@@burakkuburu96 Well, for me I would be looking at the CPU and seeing which one offers the best price to performance. Otherwise I don't see a huge difference.
@@HaisteComputerRepair I think I will go for thinkpad t480. t480 is available for a little less than what I mentioned. I am in India and it will be difficult to buy from you in India.
as the other person stated, yes but with lowered resolution. I tested it on a T480: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QiOOIy3Y_8U.htmlsi=ju1RtH1PeswwLWjJ
It may be helpful to preface your comment with your actual experience and then open a discourse as to what's happening or how it could be made better. Otherwise your comment is not really helpful to anyone, especially those who are less savvy with technology. Any brand laptop can have the chance to not perform as expected. Sorry your experience wasn't great, but I would judge you are in the minority as ThinkPads have been some of the most durable laptops I have ever used or sold.
Depends most on whether you will use more than two cores - four has become the baseline now, verging on six for the newest platforms. Win10 support ends in 2025, too.
