Lisa Gade reviews the 2017 edition of the ThinkPad Yoga with 360 degree hinges, retractable keyboard, a touch screen and included pen (Wacom AES). The Yoga 370 is 13.3”, and Lenovo has gone with that in-between size rather than continuing with the 12.5” and 14” sizes available with previous generations. It has a full HD IPS 1920 x 1080 display and runs Windows 10 on Intel 15 watt dual core i5 and i7 CPUs with up to 16GB DDR4 RAM and M.2 SSD. LTE is optional, and the laptop has a backlit keyboard, Precision TrackPad, fingerprint scanner and Thunderbolt 3. It runs relatively cool and generally quiet, as one would expect from an Ultrabook. Pricing starts at $1389.

Lisa, thanks for the review. I know it's old but I'm considering buying a second-hand option. Would it be sufficient for a modest Premiere Pro and After Effects jobs? Photoshop works fine even on my old x230 Thinkpad but video editing is clumsy. So, I'm looking for upgrade.

Could you compare Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd gen 2017) and Thinkpad Yoga 370? X1 Yoga is slightly heavier and 14 inch instead of Yoga 370 13 inch. How about the build quality, robustness, performance, display, etc. between these two?

Finally a purchase affirming review! Thanks for this video, I picked out my Thinkpad Yoga 370 based on reviews you had for other Thinkpads, and I really like it. I chose a Yoga vs. getting a 12.9" iPad Pro so I could use the full suite of Microsoft Office apps which were just too limited on the iPad. I've been very happy with it thus far, very fast and lightweight. I leave my T570 chained to it's docking station and take my Yoga 370 around the office for note taking in OneNote and it's a great mobility solution. Plenty of power in a small package configured with an i5, 8GB, 256GB m.2 PCIe SSD.

I am currently deciding between this and the yoga 720 13 inch. They're basically in the same price range, with the 720 (i7 8550u, 8gb ram, 512gb ssd) and the 370 (i7 7500u, 16gb, 512gb ssd) for about 1099 euros each. Any thoughts on this decision? I want to use it to write along during lectures and for basic 3d modeling.

Just bought one of these pre-owned from eBay for USD $137.99. According to this review and the description on the eBay listing, this will probably still be a great convertible Windows Laptab. The only thing I don't like about it so far is that it doesn't have the option of adding an internal optical drive. Manufacturers have been slowly moving away from including optical drives on new laptops, like smartphone manufacturers have done with sd cards. When a feature like that is taken away, especially when alot of people still use them, it's almost like a feature downgrade from previous models, but the price point either stays the same, or it's higher.

Its is possible to upgrade to LTE-A after purchase? I guess installing the modem won't be a problem, but I ignore how hard installing the antennas might be. Also, would it be possible to buy the modem separately on the future if needed, and would it be cheaper?

Great review but that note taking palm rejection concerns me because that is the only reason I want a touch screen--note taking and deriving math. May I request a note taking benchmark? Could you copy down 1 or 2 lines of complex math equations with subscrips and superscripts on OneNote with a rule line on? Pen lag starts showing most when you write something quickly with a lot of small sharp-curvature turns like math symbols and some foreign language characters. This kind of benchmark will tell a lot. Thanks for the awesome reviews!

great review as always; I am a bit fan of lenovo and have been watching your reviews for a while. Given that lenovo seems to have discontinued the P40 Yoga (that is, no P41 in the horizon), I sense this will provide a suitable replacement. would you agree? I like the 1440p resolution of the P40, but at 13 inches, I think 1080 should be enough. and the Quadro M500M was barely more powerful than integrated graphics, so I figure the seventh gen integrated graphics might outperformed the Quadro (typing this from my work-issued Yoga 370; besides the extra cramped space vs the P40, I am liking it).
@mobiletechreview

Yes, I'd say this is a good alternative, other than no dedicated graphics option (as you noted, the dGPU options are pretty weak in this size anyhow).

Thank you, Lisa, excellent review as always! I wonder if it's possible to install a 42mm SSD in the WWAN slot? Of course, 512GB 42mm M.2 SSDs are crazy expensive now, but I always like having the OS on a separate disk if possible, and a little more disk space never hurts. I wonder if it's possible to install a Samsung 960 Pro NVMe SSD in the 2280 slot? I've found M.2 keying is different between some NVMe disks. Now if Lenovo would put them on sale for... Say... $400 off the retail price, I'd definitely go for it. One last thing: in regards to the viewing angles (not that it matters, because there's no way to change it, but) I wonder if they are limited by the plastic covering over the display, or if the panel itself limits the angles? It is strange that an IPS display would have lower-than-usual viewing angles.

@@Felipe-is3xi Yep. I use the touch screen way more than I thought I would to quickly draw something and the overhall performance (WiFi, CPU, RAM) are good enough to do 3D modeling, dozens of Chrome tabs or some light video rendering. But it gets fairly hot. The autonomy is adequate to, plus it supports Type-C charging. At that price point (payed a bit over 300€), it's a gem.

Finally made my mind and got my device 13 days ago. Unfortunately, my honeymoon with this device was very sort. Started noticing issues with touchscreen from day two. Touch would randomly stop working and reactivate. It will specially fail after idle. I ignore if the problem occured after system updates, or it was already failing at day one (did not really use the touch screen a lot on the first two days). HID screen was hidden on device manager when touchscreen off. Would be labelled "disconnected". (edit: two days ago touchscreen totally went off to never reactivate again, and all wacom applications say that my system does not support touch) I have updated bios and drivers. Also check all power management options and USB power management options. Along with HID options regarding permits to the system to manage device shutdown for power saving. I finally reinstalled Windows just to find out it has not solve the problem. Worst of all, now that I am looking at google, touchscreen failure seems to be a very common issue, and not yet resolved! Think I´m sending this back!! As I see the issue is spread all through Windows devices, like HP and others, but is specially common on lenovo! This is really not aceptable!
@guinwhite
@guinwhite 6 лет назад
Did you ever get these issues resolved? I'm thinking about a purchase and don't would prefer to avoid a bunch of problems.
@osmanyousaf7866
@osmanyousaf7866 6 лет назад
Never managed to solve the issue. Got in touch with technical support of Lenovo, they tried to solve it via remote, but could not, so they issued a DOA certificate (dead on arrival), with it, I was able to return the device even if my two weeks return time period had expired. I got my money back, (it took some weeks), and in the meantime bought a new device. (exactly same model). The device was problematic, but customer service was very good. Though their proceedings were time consuming. I could save some time by making the purchase of the second device before having had my initial device money returned. Also, I had bought the initial device with a temporal discount on the official site, so in the second device, though i paid more, they agreed to offer me a "match price", again, i had to wait for the actual partial devolution to be done on my account, but Lenovo´s attitude was always positive. I also got a 5% extra discount on the match priced, for the troubled (again, it took some time to actually get the partial refund on my account). As i had bought my device with Microsoft office 365 for a year, and did so also in my second device, even though I returned my initial device and got a full moneyback, Microsoft did not cancel my subscription, and it simply added an second year to my account. So that was another positive feedback on top of the 5% discount! Still, to have this issues on a Thinkpad, was unthinkable when IBM owe it. The actual frame of the first laptop screen had a slight missalingment from day one, which bothered me, but I never thought it would present an actual issue (it did). I guess the screen had a physical defect on assembly, but I am not sure, it might still have been a software issue. The remote assistant I got from Lenovo did not check half of the things I did before declaring it DOA! They did not seem to have the expertise i had imagine, still, though Lenovo could not solve the issue, they at least offer a solution. Any how, so far so god with the new device. I notice a slight missalignment on the fingerprint hardware, but it has not translated into nonfunctioning. This things don´t happen with Apple devices (I´, not an Apple fan, but one has to admit that Apple devices simply do what they are suppose to, in a beautiful manner). Also, I wish I had bought the Win 10 Pro, instead of the Home version. I did not found the Win 10 Pro selling points/extra features useful for my use, but I now know of a feature they don´t really publicise, but I wish I had... the possibility to "postpone" installation of windows updates. The Home version is very limited in this sense, and due to the existing possibility that my screen issues were the result of a conflicting Win update, is a big handycap not being able to control downloads and installments of win updates. (edit) PS: I bought my device in Spain. Lenovo outsource´s its distribution through one exlcusive authorised distributor here, and they also outsource their technical support to another company, and their main logistic and technical centre is in Germany. That is one of the reasons for it to take so long between the point they agree to a solution to any risen issue, and the actual execution and implementation of it, delaying the actual resolution!

So I can rest my hand heavily on the screen for hours when doing art. It's a popular thing for artists to do, so you don't get problems from occasional palm rejection misses. Also, that way palm grease doesn't get on the screen.

Yes, their founder tells me it's still coming. They've been doing some minor changes to the unit and are holding off on sending out units until done.

I checked at Lenovo's website for my country (note: I ordered mine elsewhere) and these are the options: i.imgur.com/73doebb.png No adapter at all is not one of the options, yet I got nothing. Oh well, ordered a 3rd party multifunctional usb-c thingy anyway. Has all those things in one package (except native ethernet).

Actual key size is too small. It makes the typing experience a nightmare, no matter how good the actual key mechanism is. I wish they would have made the keyboard larger, using all of the available space, and reducing the gap between keys!

why put an ethernet port that nobody uses anyway and then supply a dongle??!... adding an additional USB / Thunderbolt 3 port instead would've been a better idea in my opinion. USB ethernet dongle is the same size
@arzolt4765
@arzolt4765 6 лет назад
The mini-ethernet port is here because there is not enough space for a full size., but it still provide native ethernet which allows wake-on-lan, and use the PC MAC adresse, instead of the MAC adresse of the USB dongle. Native ethernet is maybe not a big deal for consumers, but its valuable for business, and its a thinkpad after all.
@ignasb
@ignasb 6 лет назад
sounds like a fair reason. Thank you for the answer!

I still use my Ethernet port in my Dell Latitude E7270. Not for business I might add, because I'm 16.
@ignasb
@ignasb 6 лет назад
Joseph, your Dell E7270 has a standard size ethernet port that is most commonly used worldwide, unlike the micro ethernet in this Thinkpad that almost nobody uses. You then need an adapter anyway. I also enjoy having an ethernet jack on my Thinkpad dock. So my reasoning was rather simple. Why not just put a universal port for various devices as there aren't too many ports on this laptop, but as Arzolt stated, having a MAC address tied to a machine is important in some business environments. This is hardly of use for a regular home user and a USB-C would be a better option any day for that. I should also add that it's pretty difficult for me to see this laptop as a business machine as it's feature set could comfortably suit some creative professionals who also desire the durability and ergonomics of a Thinkpad.
@dr.donnawalter4380
@dr.donnawalter4380 6 лет назад
Arzolt - correct - when away, especially at a business conference at a place such as Vegas where there are usually several going on at once, the wireless gets bogged down and Ethernet seems to work better/faster.

Yoga 370 owner here (i7 variant). If you think about buying one, bear in mind that the fan is very, and I mean very loud! Not only that, but the fan also kicks in almost every time I plug the charger in - at full speed, of course. Don't know if I have a bad unit or something, but this seems to be a trend here in Germany (german Lenovo Forum is full of reports about the fan)
@kennyschiff
@kennyschiff 6 лет назад
I think it really maybe the i7. I have an X230 with an i7 and it exhibit same behavior.
@yingxiangyao5323

I have x1 yoga 2nd gen with i7 7500u in it. I dont really have issues with the fan noise (maybe i'm used to this noise level). But it's quite usual to have loud fans if you have a processor with higher frequency in a such small laptop like this.
@ulnarisparese
@ulnarisparese 6 лет назад
But the fan shouldn't kick in when I'm charging, opening Firefox or the file explorer (this happens to me on a regular basis), regardless of the processor
@yingxiangyao5323
@yingxiangyao5323 6 лет назад
Jonas I didn't experience that. Maybe you should try to upgrade the bios with the program on the lenovo support website. In one version they claimed that they have solved the problem with the fans.
@arzolt4765
@arzolt4765 6 лет назад
Charging a battery generates heat. Is the fan still at full speed when fully charged, plugged and idle ? Also have you check bios setting ? my x220t have an options for the behavior of the fan when plugged or unplugged.
