Physics and biology meet to create one of the world's strangest weapons: the slime canon.

___
With their chubby bodies, soft, padded feet, and slow-motion gait, South American velvet worms appear pretty harmless. Unless they’re hungry, and you’re an insect. Over millennia, these ancient creatures have evolved a pair of hunting weapons unlike any other in nature: dual high-speed canons capable of jetting viscous slime onto their prey from up to two feet away. Delivered with such power and speed, the velvet worm’s slime canon takes the element of surprise to new levels. And because the goo is delivered through narrow, flexible tubes and expelled with such tremendous force, it can cover a vast area in a matter of milliseconds. Until recently, biologists still didn’t know exactly how these slime canons work. But then Andres Concha, a Chilean physicist who studies the physical mechanisms in biological systems, turned his attention to velvet worms. Concha and his team used high-speed cameras to film slime canons in action.

There already exist methods to make droplets. It's called flow cytometry and have been used in science for several decades. I don't see how this method can compete with flow cytometry. But I would be glad to be proven wrong :)

i always thought this would happen becasue of the backward motion the outflowing water would produce but the tubes itself are somewhat riggid structures so the force needs to get spread otherwise

They (and a lot of other invertebrates) look super fake IRL. Whip scorpions are a good example! Here's one if you were looking to be horrified today: www.clearchoicepestcontrol.com/whip_scorpion.jpg I've held one of these with my bare hands... gently. (They're basically harmless, except if they decide you are something they need to defend themselves from, like most animals.) It's possible that they used a fake worm, but if it is staged, they probably would just use one they'd had around the lab for a while.

@hopeg97

Miguel Gomez Do you really think God is so small that everything He does must be on time scales that humans can understand? The fact that the universe is so incredibly old is a testament to God's incomprehensible power.
@ryangrissett2440
@ryangrissett2440 6 лет назад
We understand how long the earth has been around and the organisms that inhabit it because we have something physical to use and base our knowledge on. God or gods are different depending on one of the thousands of religions you are describing, therefor no ones interpretation of god will be the same as the next guys. God and religion is a coping mechanism for people that need faith in something ridiculous. There are thousands of religions and everyone knows that their god is the one true god. If you need faith in something, have it in evolution, science, and coincidence.

@michaelwilliams6431 5 лет назад
@@ryangrissett2440 but evolution and science are just theory like religion or believing there is a God is, so what makes your religion "science and evolution" truth or better to believe in than the religion of a "God"? In the end 2+2=4 all ways And creation all ways needs a creator, so whether jesus allah or buddha bigbang etc. They all creations needing a creator
