Hi!
In this video I will review a product that is surprisingly not very popular with amateur photographers - the LensPen!
In this video you will find out what it is, how to use it, how much it costs, where to find it and most importantly - whether it's any good or not. (Hint: It is!)

Hi! Thank you for the kind comment :) Since it's just a brush and is meant for dusting off hard particles (such as bits of sand, dust, etc) - you should be ok rinsing the brush with water or adding soap if you think you've got oils on it. Let it dry and should be good as new again.

Hello Do anyone know Wher to get the refill powder for the lenspen not the tips or pads that are available but only the cheaper invisible version of the powder that's in the newest original lenspens, I think it's a wast to buy anytime a new lenspen instead to buy refill powders lije it's for laser printers with toners paint ? 🤔

Hi! Just a drop from a tube of general purpose glue: www.amazon.co.uk/UHU-38106-All-Purpose-Adhesive/dp/B0031RG2GA But any superglue or even PVA glue should work fine - whatever you have handy that holds strong.

Hi Pixelflux just to top up your information, should the cleaning fibre tip fall off when you need it most. Take hold of the complete rubber fixing & pull it out of the pen, here you will find it is double ended. The other end is triangular, just spin it over refit and use. There are other cleaning solutions out there but this works when you need it. Thanks for the video.

What exactly is this carbon cleaning material, and would it be safe for use on a Sony PSVR lens?
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 6 лет назад
Hey! It's essentially very fine carbon powder. It does not scratch optical glass and I've used mine many times to clean my glasses. That being said, it seems a lot of people are having scratching issues on PSVR lenses from glasses, so I can't comment on what they are made of and whether or not they will scratch if you use a Lenspen on them.

Your finger has oils and does not have a smooth surface. Same as why chalk doesn't work on smooth glass but does work on wood or concrete.

I know this is just a demonstration, but I have an issue with it. As seen, there is a greasy finger print on the front element. Mr. PixielFlux then takes his LensPen brush and smears the grease over the entire element surface. BIG MISTAKE. He has now transferred some of that grease onto his cleaning brush. Whatever he cleans with the brush will then have some of that grease on it. Time to buy a new LensPen.
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 9 лет назад
Hah, nice catch, sir! :) I did indeed have that "problem" for a short while, however it goes away AND the cleaning tip cleans off any grease very reliably anyway. Regardless of this, I find the retractable brush quite vulnerable to particles and spills and what have you anyway because the way the LensPen clips onto pockets and such - the exposed brush hole is always at the top. Again, not a big problem, the main factor is the carbon tip, the brush is just for wiping off abrasive particles so you don't damage the glass when rubbing the carbon tip over the lens.
@TheUltimateBlooper

Willfull Misconduct as a fun fact, I still use the same LensPen I've used in this demo to this day!
@4MINUTEismynumber1
@4MINUTEismynumber1 9 лет назад
I too am a LensPen fan and I guess I've had my latest one maybe 5 years, but I don't use it that often. I carry alcohol lens tissues and a natural bristle, soft fine arts brush for quick cleanings. I can't say that I've had issues like the one in your demonstration very often, if at all, and I would only use the pen on the stubborn ones. I guess I"m a bit OCD about my lenses after spending a lot (to me) of money on them. Anyway, I'm glad you've found success with your LensPen. Even as little as I've used mine, I find it an invaluable tool.
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 9 лет назад
Willfull Misconduct oh yes, like you I only use it every now and then because I tend to keep my lenses away from dirt when I can anyway, it's definitely not an everyday use product for me. But when I do use it - the results are excellent! It even scrubbed out spots off my 24-105 f/4L that I though were coating damage :D
@johnalessi
@johnalessi 2 года назад
Maybe an air blaster would be better at removing particles if the lens is greasy as to not ruin the brush. Then after the air blaster, finishing up with the carbon pad. If you have lots of grease AND particles, you might be better off trying to figure out another way -- at least to remove the bulk -- or use the brush very carefully and then either clean the brush under hot water or throw it away and get a new pen.

I bought a lenspen some time ago, to keep my sensor clean, but after first use, the carbon compound just peeled from the rubber head, and wanted to be sure about that i have to stick it back or not.(lost the receipt, cant exchange it) First result on google, 3rd sentence is the answer. A tear of glue, some air to blow then getting my sony to hand, detaching the lens what is one of my favorite, then look up for a moment to watch the video, where the exact same model is the test dummy. Pure Magic. Btw the pen is working like a charm after the sticking.

I'm thinking of using this for the inside glass parts aswell(i.e. when you take the lens apart) i'm not sure if there is another type of lenspen for the insides. So just to be 100% pro at cleaning. a) I should ideally get those 'lens cleaning tissues' remove all the dirt that i don't want circulating again. b) then use the lens pen's carbon tip side to make it spotless and dry. Right ? I have an 18-135 mm canon lens and every single glass surface has dust on it. I'm from India !
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 9 лет назад
Karthik Rao First off - make sure you're in a dust-free environment. Pick a room that has the least dust in it - you don't want more dust accidentally landing on the newly-cleaned elements (that includes stupid things like dandruff or dust/hair particles on your clothes too!). Take the lens apart. First I would blow the dust and particles off the elements with a blower (don't blow on it with your mouth - you may introduce spit), then brush it with the lenspen's brush tip and blow it off again. This will ensure that you've got bits blown off, then you've wiggled the pesky stuck bits with the brush and blown them off again. Then use the carbon tip for a final clean if you wish (I doubt your inner elements are greasy or smudged). I've noticed that the lenspen carbon tip, especially after a few uses, start leaving very tiny carbon particles on the glass along the sides of the cleaning carbon felt, so in case you do clean the elements with the carbon tip - I advise you to use the blower once more after the clean to blow those off. This would be the way I would do it personally and I'm pretty sure it's more or less fool-proof. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! Greetings from the UK!
@kayaar4048
@kayaar4048 9 лет назад
PIXELFLUX hmmm the environment, i was planning to use my room (After cleaning it up for dust ) since i've seen the canon service station and they do not have a specific room for cleaning the lens. Its just an AC room with technicians. Hence i thought i'd probably do it. Your suggestions are valuable, will surely keep them in my mind. Sometimes i feel a blower pushes dirt into other places. Maybe thinking of a vacuum cleaner, kept at distance and use gravity to suck all the dust off.Then do all that you've said. Thanks a lot for helping out.

Do it in the bathroom, I once read that it is the best place to clean gear as it's more humid and therefore has less dust particles on the air
@TheUltimateBlooper

CC photoloscabos Makes sense. Generally it's also best not to clean delicate stuff like that on/near the tables, beds and other flat surfaces, as a gust of air can lift the dust up off the flat surfaces nearby.

Hello! Very useful review! Maybe my question won't be unique here, but is there a need to refill the cup with carbon? Or is it eternal? =)
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 8 лет назад
+Alex Stavrovich Hi, Alex! First of all - thanks for watching! It's a good question. Depends on how often you use it and what you clean, but the short answer would be NO - you are likely to replace the whole thing before needing more charcoal... See, I look after my lenses and usually they don't need cleaning before a shoot unless I've been down by the seaside or in rain or something where it's damp/dusty/dirty, so I don't clean them all that often. But This particular lenspen from the video HAS lasted me well over a year before I decided to replace it with a newer Lenspen kit. And that's not because it wasn't cleaning or anything, more because from all the cleaning the top felt tip started falling apart into pieces at the edges and wasn't as soft as when I bought it (like I said, it was still possible to clean with it, tho'!) :D As for refills...well, you could charcoal up a plate above a candle flame (there was a video around here made by a russian guy about a DIY lenspen (which I thought was a bit pointless since they're so cheap!) if you need a reference. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask away if you have any more questions! :)

Great review. I have to ask, where does the oil contamination go to after it is cleaned by the pen? I mean does it get ground into the charcoal? If so how is it "replenished" and not spread back on the lens?
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 8 лет назад
+kenmtb Chemically carbon apparently dissolves the fat, so that's kind of the basic science behind this thing. Otherwise, if it's a ton of pure oil like this - it's not necessarily that clean anymore and will take a while to disappear, although I have to say I had been using this very lenspen for over a year after this video was made and only recently did I buy a new one :)

@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 9 лет назад
Hi! Under normal circumstances, depending on how heavily you use the thing, of course, it should easily last you a year. They are rated at about 500-1000 cleans and there's a carbon deposit inside the cap (which is why you need to twist the cap a few times to get a better cleaning). Eventually I bought another set of these, about a month ago, which means the one in the video lasted me well over a year (and mind you - I did ruin it badly with the chicken test to begin with) :) But to put things in perspective - a cloth won't last you nowhere even near as long as they tend to get dirty and dusty really quick!

InselAdler well, personally I would not recommend that. For one, there are fakes around there, which is bad. Secondly, my friend had a fake one and it was bad - it had a black sponge where the rubbery tip with coal felt should have been. A nice review, i would warn other users especially of the (mis)use of SILK as a way to clean their lenses, i.ve bought many years ago a LEITZ enlarger lens second hand, to replace my otherwise excellent EL NIKKOR 50 mm , turns out that this LEiTZ lens (forgot the name) had the worst image quality ive ever seen in a enlarging lens! the thing had been used by a professional photographer, ahum, who was used to "clean" his lenses with his SILK handkerchief on a regular basis, the lens has lost al his contrast due to very tiny MICRO scratches on the sensitive coating, something i did not see when buying the damned thing, SILK as well as NYLON is really very abrasive on the coating of a lens, so better use PAPER or indeed a microfiber cloth, but this thing seems an even better solution, hope this helps some folks.

that sponge in the hood of the lens pen is not in the hood of my lens pen....it wasn't here when I bought it
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 4 года назад
It should be there, regardless of whether the product is legit or not. If missing - you should probably return it or request a refund. That sponge/felt contains carbon required to refresh the pen.

bought a cheap chinese copy of the lens pen and the microfibre thingy has this black powder (the corbon i suppose) is that normal? hahah kinda weird to use it on the lens

+ganistio Well, mine do and they're fine. But monitor the surface of the lens, the cheap crap could be abrasive :)

Why did you use the brush first? Surely you just contaminated the brush with your KFC onion ring grease? Why didn't you use a blower first? The reason the pad came off and came unstuck is because it is a Chinese cheap copy. You should look around and pay maybe £2 more for the original and you will notice the difference. I know sometimes it is inevitable you will get greasy marks on the lens but don't use the brush first, instead buy some small squares of microfibre cloths and use a new one of those and this way you will not get your nice new cheap Chinese brush greasy. The brush is ok to move dust particles and loose bits of fluff but no good for KFC grease.

+Gray Anderson You're barking up a tree here mate :) It's a demo and an extreme one at that. It shows the procedure as lenspen manufacturers recommend it is done. The brush was contaminated, yes, but that lenspen served me another year after that with no problems and I've got myself a lenspen pro kit now (a genuine kit, cost me around 20 quid). The whole point of that carbon pad is that carbon dissolves grease pretty darn well, so there is no need to worry. The proof was in the usage :)

Messy, but gets the point across. Some here complained about it, but I still have and use that Helios lens and I used that same Lenspen for 2 more years after that terrible test :D

This is an old model. They started with these and later introduced models with different shapes and expanded branding. I know it looks fake, but it wasn't.

It's pretty useless Had watermarks from light rain on my lenses and this shitty thing made it worse Back to the microfiber cloth ✌
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 6 лет назад
Depends. I had a similar problem with saltwater spray marks from the seaside on my lenses and this worked just fine for me. All in all it's not a case of "I'll use ONLY XYZ", but rather using the right tool for the job. A microfiber clot is a pile of trash when it comes to removing oily smudges and fingerprints, for example. Carpenters use a variety of different tools and so should we.
