Thanks Jeff. Yes - the lyrics to some of the verses are quite mysterious to me but this one speaks very clearly to a sense of creative inertia and a sense of stultifying panic about becoming moribund while you're (as Cohen sings elsewhere) "waiting for the miracle to come".
I wish I could exchange my girl voice for yours for the 6 minutes it takes to sing this song and then I could finally sing it the way I would like to. I gave this song to a man before I knew what would become of us, with the remark that I might be his Joan, a year have gone by now and it's still his song...
