Lyrics:
Come over to the window, my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Well you know that I love to live with you
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
We met when we were almost young
Deep in the green lilac park
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
As we went kneeling through the dark
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Your letters they all say that you're beside me now
Then why do I feel alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
Is fastening my ankle to a stone
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
For now I need your hidden love
I'm cold as a new razor blade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Oh, you are really such a pretty one
I see you've gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
To wash my eyelids in the rain!
Now so long, Marianne, it's time that we began
To laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again

I discovered LCohen as a young woman getting started in life in Berlin with a guy who became my husband. We spent hours listening to Leonard Cohen in our Berlin flat. His voice will always remind me of those bygone days. Thank you LC. Amazing songs and voice

68 years, cancer survivor, with a 97 year old mum. No relationships for the past 12 years. I have had a lot of time to reflect on life and why we are here. I play this song and have learned it on guitar. I get misty when I read about their time in Delphi and how he told Marianne that he wasn't far behind her before he died. Blessings.

Yes, my wife and I walked up the steps to his house in Hydra, Greece. When we opened the door, there was Marien, just sitting there at her desk typing his lyrics, and musical notes on sheets of paper. Then we walked to the window and opened the blinds. OMG what a perfect view of the Mediterranean sea. Here he wrote his best music. Thank you, Leonard Cohen

What a song! RIP Leonard & Marianne.... I will listen and love this song till I join you on the other side...

Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine. "And you know that I've always loved you for your beauty and for your wisdom, but I don't need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. Sad? Maybe. For some poet/artists a long term commitment can negatively affect their art. I think of Joni Mitchell. Once she got married around 1980 (for 11 years), the number of her new great songs dropped off quite a bit. The exploration of a new love can be the spark which gets the creative mind to come alive.
