Sa poésie et ses chansons abordent des thèmes aussi divers que l’amour, la religion, la solitude, la sexualité et la complexité des relations entre les hommes. Et les femmes qui occupent un grande place dans sa vie et dans son imaginaire. On compte plus de 1500 reprises de ses chansons, notamment le Partisan, Suzanne, Sister of Mercy, Bird on Fire. Au fil des années 70 sa stature sera l’égale de celle d’un Dylan ou d’un John Lennon, celle d’un artiste majeur. Cohen est introduit au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 2008. Son œuvre poétique a été récompensée par le Prix Prince des Asturies des Lettres 2015.
