Leonard Whiting was truly the perfect Romeo to ever perform the part. He had the passion of Love and desire embodied in him to the perfect proportions. Olivia Hussey was the sweetest Juliet and together these two players with the words of the greatest writer in history to play through their souls as their guide, the greatest performance of Romeo and Juliet was given to the ages on film. Forever to be cherished by all who see this film ❤ I dare you not to cry at their true goodbye, I can never escape the sadness of it.
Soon after Romeo and Juliet came out in movie theaters in the late 60s, my older sister's high school class went to see it on a field trip. She must have really liked it because she bought an LP album of the movie that had the dialogue of many scenes from the movie as well as the beautiful songs. I was 10 in 1968. I'm not sure when I first listened to the LP, but I remember sitting for hours in our basement listening to the balcony scene, the first meeting scene and the death scene over and over until I had memorized them. I watched these scenes on YT yesterday and couldn't believe I still remember every word of the dialogue! It really took me back in time in my own life, remembering the glorious feeling and experience of being in love for the first time. Now I can also see and appreciate what amazing and talented actors they were at such young ages. Because they were so near the right ages, they truly brought Shakespeare's characters alive for the first time. Wish they would do a re-release in theaters for the 50th anniversary of this wonderful film.
My gosh! I thou I was the only bought that L.P. ~ didn't have video and all that back in the day! That album was the only way to relive every scene in the movie! I still have mine. :) If I'm not mistaken, I think he was to have sung the title song ~ but it was given to someone else ~ what a waste. Still love you Leonard!
Nice, Lou Ann. Your personal R&J story comes alive. I have that fantastic album too. Can you believe the surprising beautiful voice of Lenoard Whiting here? Wow. I guess it's true LW does look like Zac Efron, but the idea of it is such a culture shock, I'd rather not consider it.
@Lou Hanne Windsort I know exactly what album you mean ! I love it so much, I often listen it while doing things on my phone. It’s amazing, the way they talk is incredible and so sweet, my favorite scene is the balcony scene. It’s an orgasm if I may say so to listen to. (btw I was born in 2004 so I wasn’t around but still loves this movie very much ) ☺️❤️
Yes, Mr. Whitting will ONLY be Romeo, just as Ms. Hussey will only be Juliet. How many can recall any subsequent movies that these two have done? I'm lucky to remember Olivia in 'Jesus of Nazareth ' as Mary and a bio about Mother Theresa and vaguely recall a movie about Frankenstein for Leonard... and that's it! They got type-cast, which can prove a detriment to the careers of many actors. I never knew he could sing! Both of these talented and very good-looking actors should be better known to movie lovers.
I am upset I never knew what a beautiful singing voice he had❣️ He could have done so much more than he was given the chance to do. He was so so handsome and beautiful, so gifted in so many ways! I adored him at first viewing of Romeo and Juliet.. I was 5 yrs old. He could have been a successful singer, outright just on his own.
HE MUST HAVE HAD A TERRIBLE MANAGER!!! This is beautiful-he could have made an album or several! I saw THE movie (Romeo &Juliet) when I was 13, I can't understand why he wasn't more famous-He had it all looks& talent and he was obviously very sensitive. I have THE movie , I hope he's happy..
He never received the recognition he deserved. Beautiful voice, and the Best actor ever. To do Romeo the way he did, brought Romeo to life. The Best Romeo and Juliet Ever. Was he singing this to Olivia ???? Sigh!!! Did he not put out an album????
deec269 I feel like this song was for Olivia .... they were so perfect to each other from the very beginning.. Oh what a film ... Romeo and Juliette ....
the most beautiful, fantastic actor and singer Leonard Whiting will always be the best Romeo of our lives. I was 19 when whatched this movie first time in Russian Language. Now age of 70 i feel so much passion, and beauty in Olivia and Leonard love in the movie and in life. I wish them long life and to keep mamory of this unparallel performance.
My goodness.....it's hard to believe that the world never knew he could sing, too! He sings as well as he looked! He could have been a superstar. What happened?!?! The world should have known about him.😔
these two teenagers were incredibly beautiful, they're jaw-droppingly enthralling. Zefferelli admitted to not needing makeup for them. Perfect youthful beauty and amazing delivery of their dialogues. Casting 2 young teens really captured the innocence desperation fury & passion of young love. Im 51 now and since the age of 10 Ive found Romeo / Leonard to be incredibly beautifully sexy. Today though I feel guilty about his intense captivating gorgeousness -- given that he was only 17 / 18 yrs old in the movie. He'd be 68 now
So beautiful Leonard almost made me cry! I’ve loved Romeo and Juliet since I’ve first seen it.... thank you Franco for making one of the best movies ever... in my top 5.... I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve seen it... the first true love everyone dreams of.... with someone as handsome as you!!! Your wife is a very lucky person!!!! Awesome awesome awesome talent!!!!
I saw R and J at school in English Lit years after it was made, I was 15 and fell head over heels in love with Leonard, I just couldn’t stop thinking about him and it went on for years! I still think he’s one of the most handsome men there has ever been.
The other Alys yes, I very much understand you. He was very good-looking at 16-17, especially in that movie, which added to his image and appeal. Unfortunately his good looks faded way too quickly. Looking at him aged it’s hard to believe it’s the same person. He was is also quite short, 5’8”. I knew a guy who was so gorgeous at 16, he stopped traffic. People couldn’t stop staring at him everywhere. At 18 he was still good-looking, but nothing like he was at 16. Then he totally lost his looks after 30. It was incredible and very sad.
Same! I was a kid when I first saw Romeo and Juliet, when he first came out I was like, "Woah!" and especially that scene where they first meet at the dance, he took Olivia's hand and when she looked down his smiling face filled the camera, I was just hypnotized. And Olivia was gorgeous too.
Wow. Beautiful voice, stunning performance as Romeo. I hope he has had a good life over the past 5 decades & can go to the grave knowing he brought happiness to a lot of young girls over generations. He will live on as the best Romeo of them all. And Shakespeare will be waiting for him on the other side to give him a pat on the back for a job well done.
‘What is a youth’ was originally filmed and recorded by Lenard Whiting. He states that in one of the more recent RU-vid interviews. Nino Rota Henry Mancini Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet/Composers
I also fell in love with leonard. I was 10 when the movie came out and I always wanted to be an actor. I saw the movie about 20 times and I bought the record and sat on the floor and played the record over and over until I learned all of their lines. I used to recite the lines with their English accents and my parents had me act for their friends. I also created a scrap book of the movie and time I and juliet. And like most people I thought it was the best time I and juliet ever made. Franco did the movie as it should have been. Olivia Hussey was gorgeous and was the most gifted juliet ever. I joined acting theaters but never got the chance to play juliet. I even made my confirmation name juliet!
Gorgeous voice. Big sigh. I’ve seen LW state in an interview that he was supposed to sing the “What is a Youth?” solo in the film. I wonder why the plans changed?
Praying that I can meet him and Olivia Hussey one day, talk with them, and give them the biggest hugs on the planet! 🙏🙏🙏❤️ After a long time, I am going back to the movie! I watched it all the time ever since I read the play in 8th grade, and after staying away from it for many years,I am ready to see him and Olivia again in the movie. I need these two star-crossed lovers back in my life! I will never leave them again! Leonard had such a beautiful voice; I wish he could sing more!
I just had brunch with Leonard and his wife in New York yesterday and I hadn't known that he sang until he shared it in a very modest moment. His version of "You Don't Know Me" is clearly my favorite. What an incredibly talented and humble man Leonard Whiting is ...
How lucky you are to know this beautiful talented man !!! He and Olivia Hussey's incredible acting talent as teenagers and also their astonishing beauty and innocence fills my heart with joy still today { I am their age ! }
That must be cool to know a celebrity. Although I was born in '67, I have really enjoy the '68 version of R& J the best. I have not seen the 2013 version with Hailed Seinfeld. Leonard had a cool voice. He mentioned in a 2016 interview, this song is his fave. My late HS friend Roberta Gorski once worked as an associate producer in Hollywood. She died in 20009 at 40. If fate had been different, I might have met celebrities as well. I am sure both performers are touched the film has moved generations.
I am the same age as Olivia. When I went to see Romeo and Juliet I fell in love with them both. They were both so perfect to me. I love to see that they are still friends, they both are still very attractive and seem to be lovely people.
Thx for posting... I should have seen this years ago. Forever R&J Fan. Now they are legends. New generations will grow to appreciate this classic & timeless version of Shakespeare's R&J
I was only 15 the first time I watched the movie Romeo and Juliet I must have seen it another 5 times after that and was totally in love with Leonard Whiting for years thereafter.
