Thank you!! this was really helpful, im currently trying to research about leopard geckos and ive been watching several care guides, several good reptile/leopard gecko owners on tiktok + youtube and ive been learning a lot about them! :D
im not planning on getting a leopard anytime soon but ive been on a deep dive about them for the past few days. they are definitely adorable and this care guide is great! also the list of stuff for a bioactive set up is awesome
@VixinatorsVideos omg i wanna be a vet when I grow up but I have a question you know when you have to put animals down? If I ever do be a vet, do I need to put them down because i don't wanna put them down ever I would cry for days 😞
@@AriLuvzyt Yeahh, you would put sometimes multiple down per day if you worked in emergency. Even at a clinic it's harder because you'll sometimes have a patient for many years and also be the one to put them down. But you try to make it as peaceful and easy for the patient and their family as possible.
Thank you so much for the resource compilation! I had a friend whose roommate adopted a gecko (her name is Samsung!), but then moved out and left her behind. Because my friend was moving across the country she wasn't able to take care of her either. I don't know much about reptiles but want to ensure Samsung has all the proper gear and stimulation she needs for a long, happy life. I was finding it a bit difficult to navigate and am beyond grateful for a solid starting place. Thank you from Montana! 💕
I want a leopard gecko soooo bad I recently got a love for them when meeting my zoology leopard gecko. Sweetest thing ever. Ever since then I’ve been wanting to adopt my own when I have enough money 💛 love them so much
What you said about the care guide is so true this is my at least 15th care guide and I’ve had one for two years. I like to just take the average of what they all say.
I’m currently working on building my leopard gecko a new 4x2x2, her current setup is only slightly smaller and it is cluttered like crazy, so I plan on doing the same for the new enclosure. For this new one I’m also adding half slate half loose substrate (a topsoil and play sand mix) and I’m really excited. My leo is 4 yrs old and her name is Noodle, I’ve had her since she was a juvenile
I know a lot of people may come at me but i purchased my first reptile from petco it was a crestie let me explained why this crested gecko was suffering it’s was in an 8 by 5 by 6 inclosure with a reptile carpet a food bowl and a fake plant it was there for a its whole like which it was only 6 months when i got it and it was in the same habitat as another gecko yes two in that space they were both males it is healthy since i got it so ye
Thank you for this video! I’m rescuing a gecko from Facebook on Friday because her owner has to move. I can’t wait to go on a long life journey with her 🦎
I’m now second guessing if I should get a leopard gecko… maybe I should return the terrarium… maybe I shouldn’t even get a leopard gecko… that might be a good idea…
Great video! 🤍 What is the name of the calcium without d3, calcium with d3 and vitamin that you use? I also provide for my leopardgeckos a uvb lamp: would you still recommend to feed calcium without d3 every feeding so for adults around 3 times a week, calcium with d3 twice a month and multivitamins also twice a month? And how often do you use these supplements for baby’s? Thank you so much! 🦎
Tomorrow I’m rescuing a leopard gecko from someone wanting to rehome it on FB. It is an adult in a 20 gallon tank & on reptile carpet 😭 i wasn’t planning on getting another reptile anytime soon but she needs me. I have a ball python & crested gecko.
Maybe a silly question but what do you put the Halogen bulb into? Google isn't helping. I'm talking about the unit the lightbulb goes into. Arcadia isn't making the halogen bulbs anymore due to Energy Saving regulations in the US, so their website doesn't help either.
I rescued cohabited, geckos all females off of craigslist they’re doing pretty good together I am about to upgrade them to a bigger enclosure any tips? I don’t wanna separate them they cuddle with each other drink with each other,
My rescue gecko has no front claws and i got her onto some reptisoil about a month ago, she seems to like it but would she be considered disabled since she has no claws?
So any organic top soil will work? Is it okay if It has like veggie waste in it? What should i look for in the mix that wouldnt be safe? Im trying to make some substrate but i dont know what top soil to look for. I dont have the topsoil shown in the video or scotts topsoil
i don’t have the topsoils i showed in my country… i prefer to use reptisoil! but if you want to use a topsoil you gotta make sure it’s fertilizer free, manure free, organic soil (which can be extremely hard to find :/ )
Question, im a new Leopard gecko momma, and I was told to purchase a carpet for them as they are just a wee baby, and that substrate isn't good for them at this age. But you just said the carpets could hurt them but not to use the substrate mix until 6 months of age, so now im concerned about the carpet in the enclosure and dont know what i should be using until my little one is big enough for the sub mix. 😢 i just ordered a bunch of the stuff you mentioned for their habitat and i love my little baby so i just want to make sure im doing everything i can to keep them happy safe and healthy while they are still growing. TiA
You didn't mention mouth rot. I was super into your video but my guy just passed from mouth rot. We went to the vet, he was on antibiotics and critical care food and was doing better. But he declined very quickly after stopping the antibiotics..the vet said that could happen Now I'm torn between you knowing what's best or if I need to just go to a gecko school to learn all things about geckos. I'm not being rude, I just need the best everything if I plan to get another gecko and I thought this was it but, mouth rot wasn't mentioned. Please no hateful comments.. I got him help he needed within a week of him not eating. When we went to the vrt he was 62grams by the time he passed which was a 12 day window, he was 40 grams, that's with eating the critical care food . Was he misdiagnosed? Please. Any insight would be much appreciated .thank you
Being new at this u have made me change what i was told to do by a store lol. So do i do a fogger or a mister. Also can i have a super shallow water fall
I was told I can have a male female in my palidiurim. I bought a heating pad cause was recommended. Only got led cause I was told no other lights needed. I was told the beetles not sure which one smell like plastic and do nothing lol
I rescued a geiko about 6 mths ago. Its taken me a long time and lots of patience but he has finally started sitting in my hands and takes food from me too. I was wondering about how long before i try to pick him up without losing the the trust Ive finally gotten from him. The other owners never took any time and was hardly given a good diet. Hes made up for that lol.
i have heard many times that 20 gallon tanks are a good size for leopard geckos by many people i’m not saying your wrong by any stretch but i was just wondering if it is a vertical tank if 20 gallons is okay
I wondered about it, but also at the same time… they all need love and they all need a home in the end. So I think as long as we can provide a good and healthy home for them and make sure they are well it should be fine
I am the new owner of a 3 year old leopard gecko that was being rehomed. He was not getting the attention he needed. After watching your very educational video - I want to switch him from the sand mat to loose substrate. Do you think doing so will stress him out?? Or do they easily adjust. He is very shy but molting/growing. TIA
they do pretty much easily adjust to new environments, but I wouldn’t take him out of his enclosure or handle him for a few day to let him adjust to the new environment . Also I suggest not to move him while he is shedding.
I agree I personally wouldn’t cohab a leopard gecko, but to say you’ve never seen any anybody do it properly besides a zookeeper is actually kind of discrediting
Hey so I need some help. My leopard gecko isn’t in quarantine and i currently have reptile carpet. I know the carpet is bad but I’ve tried to get him loose substrate and he got some in his eye and that ended in a $300 vet bill. What should I use instead of reptile carpet?
I have a juvenile leopard gecko. I could use some help on temp and humidity. My temp is low and humidity is high. I use a heating lap I have it on for 10/12 hrs during the day and off at night. 10 gal tank.
eco earth is not a safe loose substrate by itself. it’s best if mixed with an organic topsoil and playsand… or something like ReptiSoil! eco earth is best for high humidity species as when dried it is incredibly dusty. check out ReptiFiles.com for other safe loose substrate options for leopard geckos!
i budgeted $1000 start up for my leopard gecko! you can find proper sized enclosures on FB marketplace for super cheap ($100-$200). decor (~$200). heating and lighting (~$200). substrate - in the future (~$60). vet bills (~$200). and the gecko itself ($100-$1000).
The video could use some more insights. What kind of standard do you use to determine ethics? I would think productivity and behavior. Which can be achieved with a rack system.
This is a wonderful question! I actually didn't cite my favourite article addressing this, it's "Arbitrary Husbandry Practices and Misconceptions" by Mendyk and Warwick located in the 2nd Edition book of "Health and Welfare of Captive Reptiles." This chapter uses evidence-based and scientific research on snakes to demonstrate the effect of rack systems on their overall health and well-being. This can be applied to geckos, like leopard geckos, as well! Rack systems do not allow individuals to provide proper and safe UVB which like I mention in the video they need for the metabolism of calcium. Rack systems do not allow for a deep enough substrate layer or climbing opportunities they require for enrichment. As the book chapter is pertaining to snakes, the argument about them not being able to fully stretch out, doesn't necessarily apply here but it definitely would in some cases. However, I do agree rack systems increase productivity for breeders, but are definitely not a long-term housing system for breeder geckos and babies. Long story short, I like to compare a rack system to making a human live in a closet for their entire life. Yes, you may be able to stimulate a proper day/night cycle through LEDs or your lighting of choice, however an individual would not receive adequate vitamin D from simply their diet. Moreover, the physiological and psychological effects of immobility can shorten a lifespan significantly. So to answer the question: What kind of standards do you use to determine ethics? Science and evidence-based practices is what I use to determine ethics. The RU-vid channel Reptiles and Research has wonderful insight on this topic as well, with videos entirely based on welfare and ethics!
I watched up until 12mins agreeing with all, and then it was mentioned that they "require" UVB lighting, which is simply incorrect. If you're south facing natural light is plenty for their health. I stopped listening after that point to write this grinchy comment, then left.
