In the first episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I've finally made it to California and am ready to start kayak fishing. I meet up with Mike Ponce in Dana Point to start scratching new species off my list. Today's targets are calico bass, leopard sharks and whatever else we can find offshore.
Watch until the end for a preview at episode 2!
Comment below and tell me more about fishing in SoCal or ask me any questions you guys have! I reply to every one.
Thanks to Fish Village and Pure Watersports for their help during my time in Dana Point!

Thank you Robert. I actually shop your sponsors now so it's getting them real results. You are a natural for this career brother. Truly appreciate the hard work so I can live it from my couch. Over.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 лет назад
+Scott Ehrlich thanks for the kind words Scott, I appreciate it! I turn down about a dozen sponsorship offers for every one I accept. If I don't already use and love the product or WHOLE HEARTEDLY believe it's the best in its genre, I pass, even when money is offered (I'd be living much more comfortably if I just blindly accepted them all). I say all that to say that if I work with a company, it's because I stand behind the product. If you're ever unhappy with one of those purchases, you let me know and I'll help take care of ya.

My fishery! Hell yeah! You haven't put out as much fishing content as you used to, but it looks like that's about to change. Seriously, when you put out actual fishing content, it's some of the best. You have a way with editing and narration that makes the story compelling. And yeah, those calicos are strong fighters and hella fun to catch, much more so than lmb's. They're the reason I first switched from freshwater to salt, lol. Looking forward to the rest of the series, especially the La Jolla episode!

@YakFishField 7 лет назад
The short one? That's the alligator clamp mount from GoPro. Very versatile mount. There are lots of Chinese knock offs on Amazon but I wouldn't go that route, their clamps are unreliable and you're putting your GoPro at risk. The thing is $40 from GoPro which isn't cheap, but worth the peace of mind.

So we were catching those calicos in about 40 feet, maybe 1/4 mile out of the harbor. The leopard shark came in about 12 feet right off the beach. They hang out in and right past the surf. In most of the episodes I talk about how deep we're fishing. And in episode 3 you'll get a glimpse of just how many leopard sharks hang out right off the beach!

Robert, you make really good, entertaining and quality kayak fishing/trip series! I'm looking forward to see more! And one request to you: you are exposed to more different environment and test more gear than many of us. Could you do a full gear review which you had during this trip, to tell what works and what not so much (if it doesn't violate your sponsorship agreement)? You do some, and advertise more, and it will be helpful to know your fair opinion and recommendations. Thanks!

You could even have it to where you have them on your boat with a manual pump and pump them up put them on the retractable arms and extend them out for 5 feet and give you way more buoyancy when you’re in the open waters I think that would be a awesome feature on a kayak

Looks like that Leopard Shark swallowed the sardine and hook. Did you get the hook out? Can you leave hooks in since it’s salt-water and the hook just deteriorates allowing the fish to live?

I've been there a bunch. I live kinda close to there. There's also spotted bay bass there. I've caught all 3(calicoes, spots, and those barred sand bass)

Hahaha man, they're just fish like any other. I kayak around sharks all the time and have never felt threatened or in danger. They may come in close to check ya out, but once they realize you're not food, they keep moving. Really gentle giants most of the time... until you hook one.

Your videos are so well edited I feel like I'm not even watching a RU-vid video but a movie instead. When was this? I can't imagine you edited this in between now and the time the last vlog came out
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 лет назад
Thanks dude I appreciate that! I'm self-taught so there's still plenty of room for improvement. This was a little while ago, I definitely couldn't have edited this along the way. My schedule was so tight there were many nights of driving until 2:00am and going fishing at 5:00am. Look for an announcement at the end of the season about a huge change to my life that will involve more "real-time" weekly episodes. Thanks again bro!

Robert Field just finished ep 2! Awesome video again. Do you only do kayak fishing? I was gonna ask why you didn't go out to Catalina or Coronado islands but then I realized those might be a bit much of pedal in the kayak. Tight lines
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 лет назад
+Turner Kay yeah I primarily fish out of a kayak. But I did a mothership trip to San Clemente Island with 21 other kayak anglers. Those episodes will come after this west coast tour series.

Robert Field awesome! It's always cool to find an angler that replies to comments much less this fast. There is a group of kayak fisherman that make a yearly trip to San Cedros island. If you have time I believe the channel "warbaits" just uploaded the first part.

You probably could make it out of some kind of light aluminum rods and actually have a pump that hooks up to a small battery or manually pump up the tubes that hook onto the aluminum rods on each side that go out for 5 foot just to give you stability when you’re on open waters I’m sure that could be integrated into the kayak really easy

Robert just a thought why not have retractable floating buoys of some sort that could swing out on each side when in open water to give more stability on each side I’m sure that could be engineered easily for rougher water or an adapter with arm on each side that would be cool if only 4-5 feet for stability I’m sure someone has thought of that or maybe already available if not draw it up and try integrate just a thought as I watch y’all fish hopefully I said it right

What kind of rod is the pink rod with the eyelets on different sides of the pole? Can you give the specs of the rod also? Thanks for the great channel!! Tight lines!
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 лет назад
+PinaMcVfamily that's a custom rod built by a guy named Mark Crouse. I'm really not sure of the specs. The eyes wrapping around is called acid wrap or spiral wrap.
@PinaMcVfamily
@PinaMcVfamily 7 лет назад
Cool Thanks!! I'll do some research on it. Looks like it is a lot easier on the rod and you when bringing the fish in, especially how close to the water you are sitting.
@luvmuscle37
@luvmuscle37 3 года назад
Why don’t they add retractable arms to the side of the kayak with floating devices maybe four or 5 foot to give you more stability when you’re in open waters I think that would be an excellent feature when you’re fishing open waters maybe you only put them on the kayak when you’re doing that kind of fishing but it seems like it would be an easy option to integrate that into the kayak

Firstly Robert let me say that your channel is one of the best kayak fishing channels out there very underrated you should have more subscribers!. Now about that leopard shark i wonder how good it tastes? Is it good eating? Try to cook one next time you catch one it would be interesting? As you go along your journey catching new species is wonderful but trying cooking and tasting some of the new species is even better; it will be very interesting too so don't miss the chance cheers bro rock on.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words about my channel bro! So I don't know much about eating leopard sharks, that was way too much meat for me to harvest on a trip like this where I'm not staying in one place for more than a couple days. But don't worry, there are several "Catch and Cook" VLOG episodes throughout the season of some of the tastier fish along the way. The first one will be cooking up one of my catches with my mom after episode 3. Stay tuned man, I'm on it!

Late reply here but leopards can be good eating, just remember to bleed them immediatly. Also minimum size is 36" in california and 3 fish per day

You could have Flatow bowl buoys to put on the retractable arms on the side of the kayak where you could manually pump them up and then put your arms out on each side and give you a lot more buoyancy when you’re an open roof or water
