Finally the information the internet truly needed on leprosy in armadillos. This little one was orphaned after his mother was hit by a vehicle. It's being taken to a wildlife rehabber so that it can hopefully be released by into the wild ahead. According to AI online, handling or eating armadillo meat, working in areas where they are present such as hunting or gardening, touching soil that is contaminated with their feces, such as in their burrows, touching their feces, all with open wounds or inhaling contaminated dust. Then you have to be susceptible to it. A priest, Father Damien, who cared for people who had leprosy came down with it. He wasn’t eating them, he was probably breathing their exhalations.

Armadillos like the warmth. They have a very low metabolic rate which means they generally need a warmer environment or they burrow and curl up to conserve heat. ru-vid.comEd9fAsBk4o8 It's true that some armadillos carry the bacteria responsible for leprosy. Around 20% of the armadillo population may carry it. However, it's important to note that not all armadillos are infected, and even if they are, the risk of transmission to humans is relatively low. In fact, about 95% of adult humans are naturally resistant to the bacteria. It's crucial to respect and admire these unique creatures from a safe distance while practicing good hygiene in the wild.

SOME armadillo absolutely carry Mycobacterium leprae. In fact, the "gold standard" for incubating leprosy in reference laboratories still involves using a culture from the foot pad of an armadillo. Other than humans, the only other natural hosts are the nine-banded armadillo and certain red squirrels.

My best friend's father in law suffered from diabetes, and spent most of his evenings sitting in his chair, watching TV, or reading. When his old lab passed, his son bought him a puppy, so he wouldn't be lonely. Soon after, my buddy & his wife stopped to visit, and found him with a large bandage on one of his feet. The puppy had literally laid there & severely chewed on his foot one night, to the point that it caused a ton of problems, and he had no clue from lack of feeling, due to the diabetes 🤦‍♂️

When I was a kid growing up in Guadalajara Mexico, in the late 1970s, there was a set of beggars with leprosy that sat on blankets downtown around the state buildings. They all had dishes to collect centavos in. People would drop coins in the dishes. They did not want to touch anyone and no one wanted to touch them. It was heart breaking as well as gross. God bless those sad folks.

However it can be transmitted by eating any undercooked meat from the animal, as well as through contact with blood or excrement. And soil can be infected by any of these (it's believed that infected soil is how it made the jump from humans to armadillos in the first place). He also downplays the likelihood that any particular armadillo is infected. Up to 20% of armadillos are infected. As part of that downplaying he says "armadillos don't get leprosy" as whether or not they display the same symptoms as humans as any bearing on whether they can transmit the bacteria to humans. And we just don't know if physical contact like that seen in this video can result in infection. The studies have only looked at consumption. He also downplays the treatment for leprosy. It requires a regiment of 2 to 3 antibiotics for 6 months to 2 years. It also requires early detection as any damage done before the bacteria are killed off will be permanent.

Leprosy isn't a flesh eating bacteria. It's a bacteria that causes nerve damage. The sores and infections occur when the nerve damage prevents someone from feeling pain. Later on she told us how Bambi didn’t make it and she didn’t want him to rot on the road. She said the land feeds us but we must respect the land and the animals. You can get it through a scratch. Leprosy can have a VERY long incubation period or be active but hidden before symptoms start. You will not know any time near infection you have it unless you get tested after playing with a wild armadillo. It is treatable but any damage is usually permanent and the longer it is allowed to fester, the harder it is to treat and still can be life threatening. Catching it is a rare thing and Armadillos are the number one cause in the US of diagnosed Leprosy. So if you like to play with wild Armadillos you too can be one of the average 250 ppl diagnosed a year with it in the US. Outside of that... dont eat raw armadillo.
@WildlifeCommandCenter
@WildlifeCommandCenter 17 дней назад
Hey @kckey4535, Thanks for sharing this important information about leprosy (Hansen's disease) and its connection with armadillos. You're right that leprosy can be transmitted from armadillos to humans, primarily through direct contact with these animals or their environment. The bacteria responsible, *Mycobacterium leprae*, indeed has a lengthy incubation period, which can make diagnosis and treatment challenging. While it is treatable, early detection is crucial to prevent long-term complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does emphasize that the risk of contracting leprosy from armadillos is low, but it's a risk nonetheless, particularly in the southern United States where armadillos are common. For those who live in or visit areas populated by armadillos, it’s wise to avoid handling them and to take precautions when in environments where armadillos are active. This can help reduce the risk of exposure to the bacteria. For anyone interested in learning more about wildlife diseases and how to safely interact with wild animals, I invite you to check out our RU-vid channel, where we cover a wide range of topics related to wildlife handling and disease prevention. Here’s the link for easy access: [Wildlife Command Center RU-vid Channel](ru-vid.com/show-UCx4UeydCJfXHnV-wtF80TEQ). ru-vid.comEd9fAsBk4o8 It's true that some armadillos carry the bacteria responsible for leprosy.

Also, there are certain types of armadillos (9-banded) that are more likely to carry leprosy. If youre gonna mess with a wild aramdillo (which you shouldnt) at least know your aramadillo subspecies.

I went to a leprosy colony in Malawi, it was run by dad's friend, a doctor , we interacted with many people there . DIDN'T get leprosy. Wish people would understand it is hard to catch . It is very treatable , may be horrible but it is disgusting and cruel to shun people who have it. All those poor folk in that colony had come from all over and had been thrown out of their families and communities just because they had something that is a disease . So so sad 🙏🙏🙏

🦠🤠 Howdy y’all! Bare Hands Beran here, talking armadillos and a bit of medical trivia-yep, including how my Southern twang turns 'stigma' into 'stigmatism'! Now, before you worry about catching anything just by watching, let me put on my serious hat for a sec: 95% of us adults are naturally immune to the bacteria that causes Hansen's disease, also known as leprosy. But don't let those old wives' tales scare you away from appreciating these unique critters. Armadillos are an important part of our ecosystem, acting as nature's gardeners. They dig for their food, which aerates the soil, helping to maintain a healthy earth! 🌍 Curious about more fun facts or myths surrounding our armored friends? I saw a story of a young man who found and touched an armadillo carcass and caught leprosy. The big problem is that the disease is so rare doctors don’t recognize the symptoms which makes it doubly dangerous.
@Yabbadabbadoe
@Yabbadabbadoe 9 месяцев назад
Well presumably if it had been dead for a while the bacteria could have lived off the nutrients and moisture in the body, spreading the disease to the exterior of the armadillo as well? So then, could touching it, and then touching your face make you sick? Just an idea, spooky tho lol 🤷‍♂️

An episode of Monsters Inside Me!! I remember that episode, and was going to mention it, because you don't have to try NEARLY as hard as this guy mentions in the video to get leprosy from an armadillo. At least, not a dead one...

Omg it's adorable. We have a family of them that live under/near our neighbors shed. A baby hid under our generator because the dogs scared it. I picked the little one up, gave it some loving, then put it over the fence. I like having them around. Their bellies are super soft btw.

Several years ago in Greenville, Mississippi , a woman contracted it from working in her flower garden that an armadillo had messed up. I remember seeing it on the news. It did say it was rare to contract it.
@jackmiller6470
@jackmiller6470 10 месяцев назад
The mycobacterium is in the soil. It had nothing to do with the armadillo digging it up. It had to do with the woman having a T-cell deficiency, which allowed her to be infected. A very tiny percentage of the population are susceptible to getting leprosy.
