I found one on the side of the road, I called one of my teachers because they were into birds. He said it was a red shoulder or red tail & took it to a raptologist lady. They said it had eaten a poisoned rodent. She was feeding it mice, without gloves on & it shredded her hand with it's talons. I was trying to feed it hotdogs. Glad I didn't keep it.

Falconers do not raise their raptors from chicks. The capture adults and train them. While the birds are kept by the falconer, they are treated with extreme care, weighed every day to make sure they are in their healthiest zone, and well fed. Usually falconers release them after a season or two. That said, this guy is just getting the bird out of trouble.
@salamanca1954, thank you for sharing such detailed and insightful information about falconry! You're absolutely right; the traditional approach involves capturing adult raptors, ensuring they maintain optimal health through meticulous care, and often releasing them back into the wild after their training and hunting seasons. This practice emphasizes respect and responsibility towards these magnificent birds. In the case of the bird featured in our video, we were indeed just assisting it out of a tricky situation. It’s part of our commitment at @WildlifeCommandCenter to help wildlife in distress, ensuring they can either return to their natural environment or receive the care they need if they’re unable to survive on their own. Your clarification about imprinting for specific purposes is also spot-on and highlights the complexity and ethical considerations involved in working closely with birds of prey. Thank you for enriching the conversation with your expertise! @@WildlifeCommandCenter Thank you! All that I know about falconry is what I learned 20 years ago during a public presentation on the subject by a falconer who had three raptors with him, and a crowd of about 70 people who had gathered round. It was my day off as a newspaper editor at the time. The man introduced his subject, talked about it a little bit, and then asked for questions from the crowd -- which remained dead silent. Apparently nobody dared to be curious out loud. So, since my career as a reporter and later as an editor involved asking questions, I started asking the questions, and he started giving the answers. After almost an hour and some great information and demonstrations, he wrapped up his talk, and as he was doing so thanked me profusely for all of my questions, which essentially saved his presentation. I told him it was my pleasure and that I had as much fun learning about falconry as I'm sure many of the people in the crowd had. And that's how I know what I know about falconry... 20 years notwithstanding. If something is interesting I tend to remember it, and I found it fascinating.
If it’s a baby kite falcon, they need to leave it alone because the parents will continue to care for it outside of the nest. They do this in extreme heat to keep their babies cooler.

@pamelag7553, thank you for your concern and kind words! When we first encountered the owl, there was indeed suspicion that it might have been poisoned due to its distressed state. Thankfully, after a thorough examination and care at the World Bird Sanctuary, the owl made a remarkably swift recovery. I'm thrilled to update you that the owl is now back in the wild, soaring free as we speak! It’s always a joy to see these beautiful creatures return to their natural habitat, healthy and strong. Handling wildlife with the care they require is crucial, and we strive to ensure each animal gets the best chance at a successful recovery and release.
