in all fairness, I wasn't sure he owned shirts. Simen wears clothes on stage and in his playthroughs, so we have at minimum least anecdotal evidence of outerwear. Would very much enjoy seeing more studio scenes and some performances from Einar like Dan Tompkins demonstrating massive prowess, directly.
@@leleoalmeida Sounds like the kind of story you'd expect from a Norwegian D&D setting: "And the Bard summoned the Baard... or was it the other way around? Roll for insight"
I've been saying for years that we have barely scratched the surface of what's possible in progressive rock. Leprous here have explored the possibilities on a deeper level than I have ever heard before. And yet it is so tasteful, so musical. Mind bending, yet deeply enjoyable. At this point, words fail me.
A lot of the progressive rock in the world isn't even particularly progressive anymore, it became a parody of itself in the 1970's with endless soloing and particularly cringe-worthy lyrical content.
@@benschmitt7035 It looks chaotic because he is actually going deep into playing it with his guts, while adding a lot of things everywhere. It seems that he doesn't repeat twice exactly the same thing. The ghost notes are always different. And yet, the foundation is rock hard. "Chaotic yet so accurate" describes it perfectly :)
He's like a young Gavin Harrison during Porcupine Tree's earlier days; at least that's what I see. As an obssessed percussionist, I would definitely wager that Baard greatly respects Gavin and has been influence by him. What makes them so similar is that their ACTUAL versatility, which is a word being thrown around too lightly. Gavin Harrison, for example, can play a metal song like Futile or What Happens Now and then turn around and play complex jazz fusion. He fused techniques and styles to create his own sound, and his drums are always impreccibly tuned. Now, if Gavin hasn't already seen this, I hope he does one day, because it's one of the best playthrough performances on youTube (THE best without that damn china miss). Think of it this way: They're both incredibly musical in how they play, and they can adapt to anything. Gavin and Baard are finesse drummers, and they're also power drummers. And they've both done, and are doing, things with a drumset that is totally unique to them.
@@adamkoyn792 Funny you mention that, as I consider both Gavin and Baard among my favorite drummers due to their ability to play powerfully, with complexity, AND with emotion. One of Neil Peart's few downsides is how sterile he could sound at times. Not this guy. Astounding.
11/4 Can't think of the last time I heard a track in 11, and this is so musical one can forget it's in an odd time sig. That breakdown at the end is DOPE.
@@samerkamal3328 As far as I know, isn't 8th note vs quarter note purely based on interpretation? I count this most easily in patterns of 11 quarter notes, but if you count it most easily in 11 eighth notes, then yes, it'd be 11/8 time. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can tell, it's all based on what's easiest to read/count.
I've been watching this without fail for 10 days in a row. I still can't process what's happening. This is probably one of the most interesting, technical and subtle drum compositions out there right now. Absolutely insane.
You know you are drumming royalty when you have your own squire to keep you fully stocked on sticks at all times and fill in on percussion when needed.
Everyone in this band are badass in their own right. But watching this guy play is a straight shot of adrenaline. Gets my chest beating pretty hard watching him execute those poor sticks. Maybe the China is so far back cause its scared.
@@ratsack5842 Exactly, my experience too, China's are just sounding so f*king nice to spice things up - you just want hit them all the time - which eventually makes them boring...
This goes to show the genius of Pitfalls. Everything blends so well together that musicality and technicality becomes one. Thats why on its surface people tend to think that it's too simple compared to the older records.
wat m8, only because you got a fucking hard-on listening to the most sickest Song since 3 Years while watching Sexy Baard making funny faces you must not overrate Pitfalls at the same breath dude. Pitfalls and this masterpiece actually got nothing in common.
Minimal requirements to play like Baard: two handfuls of sticks, 2 legs, 4 hands, moderate (in prog standards) drum set (china can be sourced directly if needed). Optional: shirt.
They say that when little drumsticks behave badly their parent's tell them Baard will come and use them to play this song. The drumstick kill ratio in this song is so fucking high LOL
@@alexanderchaker Then the engineer is utterly incompetent. No matter where a china is in the room it will bleed. The whole recording of the drums (if this is the original mix) is awful. No presence to the drums.
@@gamhacked Even though you are correct, we should still talk about it whenever the feeling strikes us. Though, how you solve the problem of people venerating things that are mediocre, I have absolutely no idea.
Of course, the whole piece is great, but nevertheless the outro is one of the heaviest and at the same time moving pieces of music I have heard in my life. Sometimes I feel sorry that the band did not attempt to build a separate song around this theme. By the way - I feel a similar regret about the closing fragment of "Phantom Bride" by Deftones.
Breathtaking performance! These beats are extremely complex, I'm at a loss to describe my admiration for his skills. Even at 10:00 with a broken stick, he can keep his focus.
I am absolutely hooked and transfixed by this incredible performance. I have been listening to great music for more than 50 years and am frequently blown away by wonderful musicality and virtuosity - this is one of those occasions. Awesome does not do it justice!!
One of the most insanely cool and perfect drum playthroughs I've seen ❤ So tight throughout... my brain is nearly fried from the complexity of it 😀 Also love Baard's face when he missed the cymbal at 6:25 😄And damn, literally breaking a stick in half!!! 🤯
Every once in a while the stars align and musicians find themselves and do something truly unique. Leprous is one of those bands at the moment. Leprous is perfect for Baard, and Baard is perfect for Leprous.
These leprous songs are getting stuck in my head.. so catchy and moving.. amazing band. Music never fails in my eyes and ears.. theres always something around the corner, just waiting to amaze us all. Leprous being one of them bands.. 😊
There's so many crazy good drummers out there, yet Baard stands out so much, no matter how many times I watch him perform, I am always in awe. I could have never been ready for a record such as Pitfalls, and this song is more than I could have ever hoped for from this band. Baard showed serious finesse on the drums on this record, not just speed, power and just overall ownage of his instrument. It's a privilege to watch him age and grow, it's mindblowing to see a drummer this good at such a young age. Incredible.
He's one of the few drummer out there that I think I could easily identify if I heard just the drum track. He's unique and has a lot of personality. He's still so youg and has a lot of potential, I can't wait to see him continue to improve.
I think what sets him apart from the other top young prog drummers is his compositional ability. He is on the same level as your Neil Pearts of this world. I'd say he composes drums like they are to be part of an orchestra
It's like that Drummer that recorded with "Snarky Puppy", Larnell Luis. Dude get's called 2 days before recording, learns all the parts, get's on a plane and then proceeds to absolutely dominate. Different style, but the energy is there. Could you imagine being as good as either of these bastards? lol
Actually, I misread that guys. Larnell actually learned 2 songs a day before the shoot, then literally learns the rest ON THE PLAIN. Like he listened to the music and figured out what to play while he was flying. He then Landed and did the whole recording session. That fucking madness.. it reminds me of when Glen Gould did that for an orchestra performance. Monsters, both of them. ^.^;
The part that cracks me up about it is that he actually flipped the stick to use the back end when he realized it was broken, and then swapped it out when the other one was handed to him and neither adjustment threw him off at all.
I'm super impressed not only with his playing ability but with the teamwork at play here, from that tom bit near the beginning to the flawless stick swap at the end, who can say their band has their back like that? Absolutely incredible. I don't even care that he missed the cymbal that one time, definitely one of the most impressive drum playthroughs I've seen.
I'm old. After many watches, I can't help but remember Buddy Rich vehemently despised match grip, I think this performance stands vindicated. Baard plays like a composer on a podium of orchestral moment of greatness.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how a drum play-through video is done properly. Raw, unedited and the pure magic of being in the moment. Glorious. It gave me goosebumps all throughout the song. Bravo, Baard!
lmao i do agree that it's great, but please explain to me how this is "raw and unedited" lolol if anything you can praise it for its quality sound mixing and good editing of its angles lmao
Man they really caught you with the studio Magic didn’t they? “Raw and unedited” It’s a professionally shot and recorded video of him playing a track. The closet thing I think people would get to seeing a drum video that is completely void of any form of audio mixing, or editing; would be a single shot view of a person recording their part. I could totally see some other options though. He still rips! Having your sound mixed and such doesn’t take away from your drumming as long as you back it up lol. He surely does.
So can we start putting this guy amongst the best ever drummers in the world, past and present yet?? I was laughed at years ago when i said it! Baard is incredible!!
Does he always do that? If not, I think it's so that it wont be so high in the recordings. Might be the same live as well, avoid having it on full blast in all the mic's. Alternatively it might be to discourage extended use!
Fire The sky is red, red again Uncontrollable impulses coming my way Stripped of all logic sense My head feels so dense Falling down endless shaft Submission giving way at last Feeling suddenly brave Grace is all that is left Is there any chance of recreation Of what I used to feel? Left me speechless, I've played for awhile too and I have to say thank you dearly, overwhelming you with emotion, tearing you apart and dropping you in a paralyzed despair
Here's my theory; Baard has separate brains on both of his pinky fingers just for complex rhythms. If you pay attention, he looks to be actually counting time and accents with them.
Jesus, I havent given leprous a fair enough chance of a listen. This is visceral, his dragged hits at the end are so incredibly musical. God this is the shit!
Baard is the reason I listen to Leprous. Every time I hear a new release is out from Leprous, I'm like.... k.... what cool rhythm has this guy got for this song.... He's NEVER disappointed me. Keep that shit up man, you are awesome!!!
I think the term "artist" gets thrown about too casually in music these days, but it would definitely be appropriate in the case of Baard Kolstad and this piece. What an insane composition.
