Lyrics:
Clockworks
Dismantling the clockwork that makes me the cynic
Pallet, wheel and click
The properties of my indifference
Reverse-engineering what makes it tick
Dissecting the finetuned mechanism
Rack and barrel, spring and pin
Its synchronous characteristics
To kill what makes it spin
Disassemble this machinery
Re-program these eyes, undo this design
Labelled and filed, each part indexed
Broken to pieces then thoroughly burned
Deconstruction of what I am
Buried to make sure he never returns
Taken apart, defused, blueprints turned to ashes
Eradicate the last remains, remnants of the insane
Disintegration, the destruction of me now imperative
To purge myself of this condition, complete this dissolution a necessity
Break this deceitful machine
A lie, what once I was, obsolete instrument
An outmoded contraption, a malfunctioning device
That callous self now extinguished, that malignant self now disused
That conceited invention to nothing now reduced
Complete disintegration, the destruction of me now imperative
To purge myself of this condition, complete this dissolution a necessity
Break this deceitful machine

I saw mushuggah live in Atlanta, Georgia while they promoted “Violent Sleep of Reason”. I became transfixed on Tomas Haake about halfway through the show. That dude is a fucking monster. That complex of a style of drumming, relentlessly, for about an hour and a half. Mind blowing. That show had me in a pleasurable daze from beginning to end, and Tomas was the machine that drove it hard.

Here's some advice to all drummers: Speed never matters when drumming What matters is coordination and separation of limbs And don't try to sound better than Tomas Haake, try to sound better than the way you played the other day because if you do that then someday you may even sound better than Tomas Haake because he didn't do this shit in one night Just saying this too cuz personally I haven't heard anyone say this is easy but I've seen too many people try it thinking they did it right But anyway this song is FIRE

Chad Smith is a seriously recognised player, it wasn't a comparison it was a fact. Comparing players to each other or yourself is a totally pointless exercise. It's about expressing who you are and what you want to say to the world. Haake is a phenomenal player but you wouldn't find him playing the kind of music Chad Smith plays.. they aren't the same person. How else do you think music finds it's way to uniqueness?

@triptychlux

right? the signatures he plays is so complex and he has such good limb independency and speed I don't think he'd fail to play any song on drums
@Tintop
@Tintop 4 года назад
i think many people are just "overestimating" Tomas' skills. yes the drumming is basically complex patterns but I don't think that there is any professional drummer out there that could not play this. Tomas admitted in an interview that he's basically not knowing to bits what he's doing on a musical level. He's more of a drummer that plays by feel. I think it's more likely that Tomas cannot play jazz drums than another drummer not being able to play what he is playing... Tomas is insanely good, no doubt about it, but some people here should expand their horizon drummers-wise.
@fiction0711
@fiction0711 4 года назад
@@Tintop I'm sorry, but that is just dumb. It is very highly unlikely that Tomas couldn't play jazz, as he had mentioned specifically that jazz fusion as one of his influences. Also, his level of limb independence is just top-tier. On top of that, his sense of groove and time is just amazing. Jazz would be a cakewalk for him. You might be right that most people overestimate his skill level by saying no one else can play everything he does. Top-level drummers could definitely play them. But the point is, how many people can be considered top-level? Not that many.
@iorwethlispuszczy5587
@iorwethlispuszczy5587 4 года назад
@@fiction0711 exactly. Many drummers considered "top-level" could try but would rather fail. What matters most in today's genres (said by a long time deathcore and metalcore fan) is to achieve the highest bpm ratio available. I mean.... Lord Marco Petruzzella (Six Feet Under, Session for latest Rings Of Saturn album, Huhnau Minchal and many other bands) is considered the fastest drummer on Earth... Yes, he is considered top level, but I doubt he could play any Meshuggah, which is based on odd signatures, polyrhythms and so on. I'd just stick to the fact that Haake is out of this world for his technicity, same as Marco Petruzzella is for his speed, Neil Peart was for his creativity and many other top drummers.
@iorwethlispuszczy5587
@iorwethlispuszczy5587 4 года назад
@LiverHook Placed same goes for any death metal/deathcore drummer though. The point of the comment, imo, was that many people do overrate Haake, but it seems quite difficult to find any other drummer on Earth that would be able to play his complex drum patterns. There are lots of godlike drummers in different genres, who can't compete against each other because they are specialized in different things. Haake is complex, but rather slow. Mounier is fast, but doesn't use polyrhytms. Marco Pitruzzella is unreachable with 300bpm and slight complexity of drum patterns and so on.
@culture_clash
@culture_clash Год назад
It's not even funny how hard it is to drum like this man does. Drumming is already difficult as it is, it takes a ton of practice making each of your limbs do different things independently and not have it sound like sh*t, but he just takes it to a level very few can achieve, even with years and years of practice. You can see how hard he has to concentrate, constantly scrunching his face. Even Danny Carey, who has always been my personal favorite drummer, says he watches Tomas to learn more and improve his own technique.

Its weird.. but I can cover stuff like this no problem all of a sudden. I've always had metronome in my head, since I was in 4th grade and all I could pay attention to was the seconds clicking on a 1980s clock. . but when I started drumming at 18, it took me YEARS to finally just get it. I could always fill the space in time.. it just sucked. Just. don't.give . up It may not be sudden. but it will start to click

This song and drum part has single handedly changed my musical career and opened my eyes to what is possible on the drums. Tomas, I would like to say thank you, and keep slaying! I would say that your my favorite drummer, but you're a very close third behind Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart. To people that will go down in history as innovators and Legends of the drums. You're right there with them. But hey, don't get too full of yourself, and don't get complacent! Keep innovating and striving to inspire others. Then who knows? Maybe you'll go down as that one metal drummer who looks like Mic Fleetwood. Just kidding. Seriously though, thank you for the inspiration!

Tomas is indeed a crazy machine, and almost no one here understands what he's doing. But, the man has a sick groove too. Look at all those ghost notes and subtilities. It's not just a cold and flat mindblowing experience. The man has everything, putting incredible musicality and some sort of humanity in the way he's playing. Just look at the whole intro, 1:30, 2:58 and so on.

idk why but i feel like Haake is at the level where if you asked him to just play the basic straight beat in 4/4 he would kinda have a hard time. I feel like he is now programmed to think in polyrhythms and something like that would just be awkward for him, like manual breathing

@horseradish4046
@horseradish4046 5 лет назад
@@Abbaddonna preparing music in 4/4 doesn't mean that's actually whats going on. they use many different odd meters which they often then resolve to 4/4 by cutting the pattern short or add a few beats, but when you play that you still have to think polyrhythms
@-LTUIiiin
@-LTUIiiin 4 года назад
@@horseradish4046 tomas said in an interview once that he doesn't think in polyrhythms(or polymeters) at all. The way meshuggah writes their songs is that first they put down a basic riff idea and then take that into a daw where they basically program all the stuff. Now the don't program the entire song, just a basic idea of how each riff would go. Then tomas practices the said riff. And instead of thinking of them as small repeating grooves he thinks of them as this one big section that he learns to play in its entirety. Edit: I'll try to find and link the interview
