You can keep your Mrs Browns Boys. Give me Cissy and Ada any day of the week. Total and utter genius. Pity that they never managed a Royal Variety Performance. Even the Queen laughed at Les Dawson. That is because this is REAL comedy. No smut, no swearing, no politics, just the best timed comedy you can imagine. The best, by the best.
No smut - except of course for Leonard having a 'very big one', Bert and his friend having the 'shindits' and 'sedentary armadildos', Ada's cousin Bertha getting 'copped' walking past a sausage factory, Miriam keeping her bra and knickers on during her 'Bavarian' meal.
The idea of Mrs Brown would have come from this Brendan O'Carroll just added a ton of Irish Blarney! I believe it's based on his mother and another legendary character - Old Mother Riley who was Arthur Lucan!
These two guys were legends. Les Dawson was a part of our TV watching when I was a kid. My parents loved him. This sketch is famous and honestly, reminds me of my grandma talking to her friends. They used to mouth words they didn't think were polite to say in company. I remember my grandma heaving up her bosom just like that. Such astute observation of people. It's still funny after all these years. These two guys were sorely missed when they passed.
Brilliant from both Les and Roy. Comedy on TV is nowhere near as good as this. Loved seeing cissie and ada on TV. Rest in peace, and thanks for all the laughs, Les and Roy. 😊
"Approaching the change?? From which direction???" ........... a perfect comedy line delivered with the timing and expression which only a professional like Roy Barraclough could've done......
I remember watching these two growing up. We didn't realize that we were watching the pinicle of British comedy and that we would never reach the same heights ever again.
My goodness i miss Les..i grew up with his wonderful humour, and these sketches with Roy Barraclough are indeed priceless treasures, and guaranteed to cheer up a weary soul. I agree, that they have u laughing aloud at the phrasology, coupled with amazing observations from a bygone era...God Bless them both, and thank YOU gorleston for the great foresight to put these on youtube..everyone should have a dose of Cissie & Ada!
Fantastic Les,Roy was the perfect foil for Les in these fantastic scenes, they were both due to make a full series together, sadly Les died before filming started..
Such a simple comedy format, two "ladies" sitting having a chat, but it is the script and both Les and Roy's timing that makes this simple comedy format fantastic.
What a fine actor Roy Barraclough was! His characterisation of Alec Gilroy in Corrie & the Cissy & Ada sketches with Les Dawson had me in fits of laughter. RIP 1935 - 1993.
Loved watching Les Dawson growing up in the 70s and 80s ,...he may acted the fool, and was very funny in his tv shows,...but he was shy by nature, was a wonderful wordsmith, and loved writing and quoting poetry, ....although comedy and humor came natural to him,.....there was far more to him than that,...he was extremely intelligent and was an accomplished pianist.....his talents are sadly missed even to this day.....some 26 years since he was sadly passed......great performer, and just a wonderful all round entertainer
"My cousin Bertha got copped when she was 59, and she swears she only walked past a sausage factory" the wink in this sentence at 6:10 makes me laugh uncontrollably every time!!!!
glamdolly20 I know they were going to before his untimely death, but they should of made a sitcom of Cisse & Ada and it would of just ran and ran and ran!
Yeah, Mrs Brown just shows how comedy has declined in this modern PC world, where expletives are what people now think is what pass as funny. Gimme Les or Roy any day. r.i.p in Comedy Heaven Mr Dawson & Mr Barraclough.
Absolute CLASS. He was and still is brilliant. These two doing Cissie and Ada are wonderful too funny 😂. Gone are these days of comedy gold. Someone would be offended now lol.
"Approaching the change! From which direction?" I used to do my running warm-up routine listening to this, but it's so funny I can't stop laughing.....
Another two brilliant comedian/actors who join the best of the 70's to 90's, all history as our days of belly aching laughs have been overtaken by the PC brigade, and we are destined to watch the drivel on tv today!!
One of the best double acts that never where unless on TV Cissie and Ada was as british as Bubble and Squeak Roy you were Les,s best sidekick You were a star R.I.P You be sadly missed
Absolutely brilliant!!. Hilarious x Makes you laugh out loud 😂😂...Thank you for this... A Good old fashioned comedy skit !! ..Ya just dont get this now a days..such a shame..Think the World needs a good laugh now and again xx I'm Thankful to remember these two loveable ladies 😏🥰😁😂😂😂...Great!!
1:32 "You know he's got a very big one..." You can see Les Dawson counting: "One, two, three....time it right..." and then trying not to laugh. "Fancy!"
Hi Terry, I remember Les starting off in the 'club circuits' Being a fellow Lancastrian, I can appreciate his sense of humour, one of my favourite all time comedians. These sketches with R B are comedy classics, Comedians today can't hold a candle to Les, with the exception of Peter Kay, yet another Lancastrian from Bolton. Great script writing Terry !!
Now that's what I call Comedy "Histerical-Rectomy" lines like this came from an age before the PC world that we now live in. r.i.p Mr Dawson and Mr Barraclough (Both sadly missed)
I had the pleasure of meeting les Dawson in run for your wife at the theatre royal in bath,Avon,uk in the late 80s,he was in great form on stage, shy off stage, but yet a pure genius-he will be missed, today's comics can't touch him for he was a one off...shane Mullally, ballinasloe, rep.of Ireland..
I've just finished watching "Les Dawson: An Audience With That Never Was", showing comedy clips and tributes from celebrity friends and fans, and using hologram technology to bring him back to the stage again. I was just over a year old when he passed away, and that was the first time I'd seen his comedy. Turns out, I've got a lot of catching up to do.
Comedy today forget it learn from the comic greats of the past sadly missed but funny forever more thankyou for making us all laugh your humour will live on todays humour won't we salute you 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😂😂😁👏👏👏
We won't see the likes of Les Dawson and Roy barraclough again that's for sure, I've watched this clip more times than I can remember and I still end up crying with laughter. I'm glad I grew up around this period when we could laugh without the WOKE being offended.
Fabulous those 2 make me laugh out loud. Love Northern humour which is like ours in nottingham.so funny. If I put my mind to it I could be very ill indeed. So true.
"you mean barium?"......"no...she kept her bra and knickers on..."...... absolutely classic........c'mon McIntyre and the rest....try and beat this.....you haven't a hope in hell !
Can one imagine the meltdown the generation of today would have if a sketch like this was done today? With all of this "progression" we have really gone backwards.
Couldn't agree more. Comedy is slowly being suffocated by our so-called 'progression.' 'Regression' is what's actually happening. We've lost the ability to laugh at others, but, more importantly, at ourselves.
