fun fact!! In real life, their blood emptied into the sewers, and many of their bodies were pulled into them. This made it so that their blood actually traveled around France - underground, in the sewers - so in a way, not really in the musical, their blood did "water the meadows of France". This is sort of shown a bit in the les mis BBC adaptation (it's a miniseries - I think it follows the book really well if you haven't watched it yet!! or if youre still listening to les mis I dunno..). But yeah, that line is amazing for so many different reasons :)
it actually comes from the Marseillaise, France’s national anthem. The french line goes "Qu’un sang impure abreuve nos sillons" (literally meaning, "That an impur blood water our meadows")
Do you hear the people sing? singing a song of angry men It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again! When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes! Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me? Beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see? Then join in the fight that will give you the right to be free! Do you hear the people sing? singing a song of angry men It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again! Some will fall, and some will live. Will you stand up and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France! This, the ORIGINAL Broadway cast is by far the best. The movie's music's tempo is too fast; in fact too fast throughout its entirety! This is stirring and one can't help but join in!
to be honest: I don´t even know the differences as I am (not yet) completely informed about the differing tasks. I am not as spoiled as to always have to hear the most perfect version. To me it suffers to hear the melody and the text! And these two criteria are close to perfect in my eyes!
You should all hear this particular song sung in French by the greatest French Singer Michel Sardou. He recoded "Il volonte du peuple" in 1980 in the French version (can you imagine that?) of Les Mis. You can find the French version of Les Miserables from Hamilton Book Sellers for just a few dollars. I wish I could attach the song, but I do not know how. Michel is absolutely amazing, he is worth searching out! I "discovered" him 2 months ago and have been listening to nothing else since.....
I just love this song because of the whole togetherness of it and the thought that together, all of these people who have nothing have everything. They have hope.
thank you very much for the information! wouldn´t have been able to know on my own as I never was interested in historical affairs--- I use to ask my environment for info (plural) I really need to know once in a while.
me too!!!! Should be the anthem of a new revolution: "US(A a-nd) EU t(ogether) w(ith) a(nd) a(gainst) t(he) e(ntire) world - Us a Eu twaatew or 32 (1-1) 724
My marching band's theme is Les Mis this year, and our fourth movement is mostly this song and we have to sing the first part of this, and ugh its so hard, but I its such an amazing show.
Been french I found the musical and the song quite good in general even if they changed many things from the book. However the play isn't taking place duriong the french revolution but during the june rebellion (that failed) after the napoleonic war. (but since france had like 100 years of revolution and rebellion it's quite undestandable)
Yeh, I was referring to 'revolution' as in the introduction of anti-monarch politics in 18th century France, and all of those who fought to make the 1789 revolution successful. It was a long journey, but boy was it worth it!
We're all glad the times aren't as harsh anymore as they were back then, and that those we consider poor have a lot more than the poor people did back then. But that doesn't mean we have to stop fighting against unfairness.
I agree fairness is subjective and this is a bit of a problem. We'll just have to do our best to try to be fair. But the fact that we have it better now than they did back then alone isn't enough to just dismiss problems out of hand.
0 dislikes!!! This shouldn't be surprising, since this is such an awesome song, yet it is! And yes, I do hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men.
Our marching band might actually be doing the same thing this year. The Boston Crusaders did a French Revolution show, and they started out by singing this song.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble, as a matter of fact, French Revolution was a bourgeois revolution, powered from a social class that had gotten rich and powerful with its own skills but was still kept out of political power because they lacked nobility. So they kind of were 18th century hipsters as well. REALLY poor people usually ends up being too busy not dying of starvation to think of politics, let alone start revolutions.
Maybe so, but unfortunately "rich" is a convenient term. Ask a varied group of people where they think the threshold of being rich should be and you will find a surprisingly wide range of answers. That's before you rattle the hornets nest on what percentage they should be paying so that the public are happy but ensuring that it doesn't end up making companies less competitive against overseas rivals.
@MCRwriterwickedfreak The Student Rebellions (also know as the July Rebellions) happened about 25 or so years after the French Revolution. That's not to say that the two aren't connected, because they happened for basically the same reasons.

@godotandL4ever I had a guided tour around the set of Les Mis and that was the information they gave me. Sorry if it is incorrect, but it was an offical representative of Les Mis has said, and no fault of my own.
