javert can't believe that he did that legitimately. as we learn in _stars_ , and in here, his worldview is insanely rigid - the path he thinks you follow is the one he thinks you'll follow for all time. it's why he pursues him even eight years after the parole is broken, why he can't fathom that valjean would let him go unconditionally at the barricade, and ultimately why he kills himself. he literally cannot think of jean as anything other than the criminal from twelve years prior.

Musically it's a poor choice. They are fighting over the narrative here, take a listen to who sings what songs. Javert comes in singing "Look down" and Valjean sings Javert's part. Then they keep switching, the singing overlay has a purpose
@bluebellrose2293
@bluebellrose2293 4 года назад
But it takes away so much from Jean ValJean. Normally he says “I am warning you Javert there’s nothing I won’t do, if I have to kill you here, I’ll do what must be done.” This is so important to his character because it’s the emergence of a darker character; it also shows his devotion to Fantine and by extension to God since he takes on this task in his name. It also ends with them singing the same line. This shows that despite ValJean winning the fight over the narrative which is taking place in their overlaid leitmotifs that Javert’s is ValJean’s opposite and equal. (This is shown a lot in their soliloquy’s). Having solely Javert ending this song leads the audience to believe that he won this confrontation, but since it was actually a confrontation of beliefs this wouldn’t make sense symbolically or narratively. ValJean fleeing makes both him and his beliefs seem inferior, and later undermines Javert Soliloquy and subsequent suicide because musically his beliefs are shown the be the domineering one.

It is not that he knows nothing of humanity its the life experiences that Javert has had " i am from the gutter too". He has seen the worst possible side of criminals and the horrors they commit. " i was born inside a cell" therefore he has devoted his life to stamping out that of what he has experienced as a child so no one else has to suffer the safe fate as he did. Both characters are fighting for the same thing (noble men). Hence why Javert commits suicide at the end because he understands he was wrong and his actions were unjustified and he cannot live with this (humanity).

Yes, I also liked the way Valjean and Javert were contrasted in this movie through their voices, not so much their styles...My first encounter with Les Mis was the original cast recording where Valjean and Javert were plaed by Colm Wilkinson and Roger Allam, both of whom have virtuoso voices in their own right (I always thought Allam sounds a lot like Gilbert Becaud). If I were to decide between Jackman and Crowe here, I would definitely say Jackman is the better singer than Crowe; Crowe is adequate, but he clearly lacks the range (and the experience to sing dramatically, while Jackman has ample experience in musicals). And I think that contrast actually works for the dynamic between the two characters, in a way that it was never able to between Wilkinson and Allam. Javert is a limited character as compared with Valjean because while both feel a duty to a higher power above, Javert lacks something that Valjean has - compassion, mercy. Javert will never reach the heights that he aspires to for that simple reason - and this why it's fitting that Crowe does not deliver such a soaring interpretation of Javert's signature song "Stars" as Allam does. And he does not have to, because he does not sing in a big theater full of people where he has to project to the last row; his version of the song is more intimate and takes us right into Javert's soul.
@chaz.o
@chaz.o 3 года назад
Christiane Alshut thank you for your insightful analysis here! I agree. I believe Crowe’s criticism for this role was mostly biased, shallow and narrow minded. The contrast is exactly what makes Crowe stand out. Very intimate scene indeed. My favorite line is “I am from the gutter too”. He’s powerful here. It’s funny to me because I’ve never liked Crowe’s acting until then. I did not think he was deserving of his Oscar for gladiator but I would give him a nom for supporting for this role.

Russel Crowe may not have the classic Broadway voice that Hugh Jackman does, but I think his gritter rock trained voice adds a great depth to Javert. Javert is an officer doing what he feels is most right. He's from the dirty gutters. He pulled himself into the world to make a name for himself. He wouldn't be the soft-spoken family man Valjean is. Valjean had a family before. He had children. With Jackman, I can imagine Valjean singing his children lullabies before bed. He's a gentle soul with a soft clear voice. Javert however is darker, grittier. We don't know much about his family. He lived hard. He had no one but himself.

While I like the effect of having that solo piece from Javert, it detracts from the character of Valjean. Remember, part of Javert's intractability is because Valjean is a dangerous criminal. The Valjean's line in the song about his willingness to kill Javert proves to the inspector that he is correct about his views.

@jackcinephile7554
@jackcinephile7554 Год назад
@@mariacillan9668 That's the dumbest argument against this movie. I'm so confused why people don't understand that songs aren't in a musical for the sake of just having songs. The songs are DIALOG! Valjean and Javert aren't singing just cause, they're having an argument and fighting while doing so. In a normal movie, a character's voice straining during a fight would be seen as a good thing. It would show just how tense the scene is, so why shouldn't it be the same in a musical? What you consider "lost quality" in their vocals is actually called acting! The actors aren't trying to sing a pretty song, they're TRYING TO TELL A STORY!
@jackcinephile7554
@jackcinephile7554 Год назад
@mms I think realistic might be a poor choice of words, since musicals aren't meant to be realistic anyway. I think "genuine" is a much better word to describe it. The little imperfections in their voices makes it feel less like a choreographed music video, like so many other musical movies do, and more like these people genuinely hate each other. What I love about the movie is that the vocals are directed just like normal spoken dialog.

Idk why people hate Crowe's performance so much. The subtlety in his voice for the first 20 seconds of this scene is spot on, and during the rest of the confrontation the fact that he sustains his vowels while Jackman enunciates them makes it so you can actually separate the two voices and hear what each is saying.

IIRC the director made both Crowe/Jackman sing for many hours in a day, dehydrated them so they had six-packs, and it wrecked the quality of their vocals.

Yes, his vocals weren’t awful, but he was singing the wrong notes, to the extent that the battle of ValJean and Javert’s leitmotifs were indistinguishable; and that’s the entire point of this scene. It’s the setup for Javert’s eventual suicide and this - and ValJean’s Soliloquy - was done so poorly that it just confuses the viewer and cheapens that essential moment.

@@Tzizenorec It's also, and relatedly, a defense of his basic moral claim that men do good or evil, not because of the circumstances they find themselves in, but because they *choose* to do good or evil (and that that choice is a result of their inherent and immutable goodness or evilness) - "Every man is born in sin! Every man must choose his way!" Valjean is implicitly arguing that this decision to steal some bread (and to break a window in order to do so, which he glosses over, even though it's very important to the moral character of his act, just as he glosses over his subsequent actions) was a product of his unfortunate circumstances, not an innate moral depravity,. Javert retorts (again, implicitly, by speaking of his own origins) that if circumstances could make a man a criminal, then he would be as much of a criminal as Valjean is; since he is not, this proves that Valjean's criminal act was actually reflective of Valjean's *innate* criminality, which cannot be changed by a change in his circumstances.

In comparison, Javert's line is one of the few times where Javert talks about his past in the play/movie and it better his line not get drowned out or muddled by Valjean's empty threat. I wonder how Javert managed to lift Valjean's sword at 1:32, since Jean Valjean is supposed to be really strong (I guess adrenaline?)

Valjean's the one lifting Javert's sword, if you look catefully at that clip, and how Javert brings back his sword and dearms Valjean. Javert is weaker than Valjean, but also a better sword fighter

One hand on the weapon versus two. You get more leverage with two hands.

Russell Crowe with a sword in hand will always be Maximus. Can't change my mind.
