I can’t believe Russell Crowe actually jumped off a bridge and killed himself for the role of Javert. Dedication.

Personally I always found the character of Javert to be one of the most interesting in Les Mis. He's portrayed to be the villain but he isn't a bad man, he's following the law which he believes to be right and just, but sees it as black and white, no taking into account of people trying their best to survive through minor offences ( such as stealing a loaf of bread to save a starving child, for example ) in a very difficult social and economic time. The class divide and levels of poverty making it near impossible for the very poor to make an honest living so forcing many of them to resort to prostitution, stealing etc. to survive but then getting punished for that too as it was illegal. Javert being "from the gutter too" gives him very little sympathy for those who don't follow the law and pull themselves out of it as it were, like he did , he knows it is possible but very difficult but views the law to be gospel and it to be people's duty to follow it with the same faith he does, not believing in the 'chaotic good' way of Jean Valjean , who did a lot of good but through mostly illegal means ( stealing bread as mentioned above , breaking parole and disappearing to become an honest man , saving Marius from the barricade among others ) . When his faith of the law is broken when Jean Valjean saves his life, he would have prefered to die at Jean Valjean's hand in an act of revenge for his Years in prison rather than be spared and "live in the debt of a thief", to be forced to accept that he chased a good man down for all those years and the law isn't as perfect as he thought .His suicide shows his inability to accept this and his last act on earth was breaking the law as suicide was illegal in France at the time. Personally I believe Russell Crowe did an amazing job portraying Javert and his singing (particularly his last song before his death, which is one of my favorites of the whole film ) shows his faith and how it eventually crumbles away . while he maybe an actor as opposed to a singer, unlike other members of the cast, I don't think his singing voice is bad at all , and it does capture the essence of the character very well which is the most important part. Fantine's 'I Dreamed a Dream' was sung in a similar manner to Javert's song on the bridge, with both meant to capture the character's pain and shaken faith. she sang through tears, lamenting what her life had become and Javert sang through panic and dispair of his misplaced faith and his world crumbling down around him. Both songs highlight the emotion felt by the characters and some parts are acted more so than sung , making it more realistic and more moving than if they had belted out a perfect ballad without Fantine's choked tears or Javert's stricken near hyperventilating. Overall while his voice isn't perfect, I do think it is good and certainly not deserving of the criticism it gets .

Javert's death in my opinion is one of those "It didn't have to be this way" moments

If you look at it a certain over-analyzed way, this is more sacrifice than suicide. He defined himself by his duty to the law, and in saying the line "it's either Valjean or Javert" before jumping, he fully aware that he would either have to go back on his entire identity or condemn the man who just saves his life - he chose to save Valjean.

Am I the only one who actually FULLY enjoyed Russell Crewe’s singing? Like it was passionate and strongly sung, not forgetting the fact that he had to sing next to completely trained singers and still sounded great

Russell Crowe's singing was passable and his acting was flawless in this scene. The torment and desperation were totally believable.

I always felt his singing was a reflection of his character, the stiffness in his voice as he sings portraying his personality from a military lifestyle, occasionally breaking out in a higher tone but always returning to his way on the next line. I felt his character was trying to show emotion in his singing but it was always hidden behind his personality/manner. I feel Russell Crow’s take on Javert shows the character better than someone who would of had a greater vocal performance.

Ok everyone hates on Russell but I’m like THE MAN WENT IN AND SANG LIVE IN A CAST FULL OF TRAINED SINGERS OK GIVE HIM SOME CREDIT

The way how “Stars” plays at the very end always sends chills up my spine...

The priest was to Valjean as Valjean was to Javert. They both showed that through compassion, your outlook on life can change fundamentally. It doesn't have to be about revenge. Love can win. Though, for Javert, it was too much to bear. He spent his entire life on, what he thought, was duty and justice. When he realized that he spent 20 years on a fruitless endeavor, he couldn't bear it. That same trial changed Valjean into a saintly figure. You can almost say the same of Javert, as he sacrificed his life rather than complete his duty and turn in Valjean. They both sacrificed themselves.

Javert is only doing his job, doing his duty. I feel sorry for him, he’s a slave of the system and in the end he realizes that he’s unable to get out of it. To me he’s the real miserable in the story. I love how human Russell Crowe played him.

Great protagonist. He truly believed in the law and justice to the point of blindness and upon his eyes being opened to the injustices of justice he just couldn’t take it.

Incredible scene, incredible acting, incredible music and incredible sound effects... wait.

Not gonna lie, that crunch sound effect had me stifling a laugh in the theater.

Man, "I'll escape now from that world, from the world of Jean ValJean, there is nowhere I can turn, there is no way to go OOOOOON", gave me chills. This music, you can hear the emotion of the characters in it.

Russell Crowe's singing is good enough for me. I don't care if its not technically perfect. I've heard far worse.

Im so confused, I loved Russel Cowe's singing. Without even knowing people were criticizing him I watched the movie and considered him as the best singer.

For those of you that don’t know Javert was actually a skilled diver in his youth. He really just wanted to take a nice cold swim to clear his head from everything that was going on. Seeing as the water was shallow he did a belly flop to maximize his surface area on the water. His gun not being on his hip however through off his sense of balance and made him fall several feet short of clearing the second ledge.

They may as well have played the Roblox "oof" when he hit the deck, that sound effect is terrible...

did they really put that slapstick sound effect on when he hits the water????

My girlfriend said that 0:34 sounds like he's saying "I'll spitty spitty right back in his face". And now I can't unhear it. I'm so mad. I love how dark this song is but I can't stop laughing whenever I hear that bit now

As someone who played Javert in my school play. This song still hits heavy when I listen now. The lyrics I sang when I performed almost made me cry because the beauty

Russell crowe is the best javert in my opinion. He looks like an inspector/cop and his voice fits the role perfectly

The music is a direct parallel to Valjean´s soliloquy after the Bishop forgave him. I have always found that beautiful. Two different reactions to mercy. One is redeemed by humbly receiving mercy. The other falls into a state of desperation, pride does not let him receive mercy.

Okay, am I the only one who enjoyed Russell Crowe’s singing more than anyone else’s in the entire musical? Whenever I hear the “is he from heaven or from hell” I get chills all over, it’s genuinely stunning. And “javert’s suicide” was my favourite song of the whole film. I love his singing in “look down” because the tone sets him up to be the logical and analytical character he is. I always thought that was completely intentional, an I was unaware of any criticism until recently. Also everyone’s making fun of the “slapstick” sound effects. However that is kind of how bones sound on when they break. It’s much louder than expected. It’s slightly exaggerated, but not as much as you’d think. Also, I believe they included the sound effect to emphasize that there’s no way he survived that.

Nobody said he was bad at singing. He's objectively a very good singer. Yes, there are people who have sung it better, but that's irrelevant.

Russell Crowe gave a stellar performance in Les Miserables. Sure his voice isnt as trained as the others, but each of his songs touched me and that is a job well done.

And my thoughts lie upon can this man be believed shall his sins be forgiven shall his crimes be reprieved. And must I now begin to doubt who never doubted all these years my heart is stolen still it trembles. The world I have known is lost in shadow is he from heaven or from hell and does he know that granting me my life today this man has killed me even so I am reaching but I fall and the stars are black and cold as I stare into the void of a world that cannot hold I'll escape now from that world from the world of Jean Valjean there is nowhere I can turn there is no way to go on!

I don’t care what the critics or anyone says about Russel Crowe’s portrayal of Inspector Javert both through acting and singing. I believe he did a STUPENDOUS job. Also, it’s not like he CAN’T sing-he can sing, but perhaps the issue was that he just had a different kind of singing voice.

If you don’t like his singing because its unlike the musical, then watch the musical… I love this rendition because its much more raw and emotional than that of the musical. It’s very different, yes it’s true. But that doesn’t mean it’s worse, it just caters to a different audience.
