[ENJOLRAS] Marius, rest. [FEUILLY] Drink with me to days gone by Sing with me the songs we knew [PROUVAIRE] Here's to pretty girls who went to our heads. [JOLY] Here's to witty girls who went to our beds. [ALL] Here's to them and here's to you! [GRANTAIRE] Drink with me to days gone by Can it be you fear to die? Will the world remember you when you fall? Could it be your death means nothing at all? Is your life just one more lie? [ALL] Drink with me to days gone by To the life that used to be [WOMEN] At the shrine of friendship never say die. [MEN] Let the wine of friendship never run dry [ALL] Here's to you and here's to me [MARIUS] Do I care if I should die. Now she goes across the sea? Life without Cosette means nothing at all. Would you weep, Cosette, should Marius fall? Will you weep, Cosette, for me?
I love, love LOVE Grantaire's interpretation of his lines in this song! I've seen other productions where he's not singing it in an introspective way, like here, but he's more than half-drunk and mocking everyone. And though it does technically fit with the Grantaire persona, I like this version better, since it's the last we really see/hear of him personally. Most of them do show him climbing up the side of the barricade when Enjrolas makes his last stand, but so much is going on in that scene that it's easy to miss that little detail.
I'm in my school's production of Les Misérables, and I have the great honor of being Grantaire. It's really difficult singing these lines since they are just so depressing. This song is absolutely beautiful though.
This is one of my favourite songs from Les Miserables honestly. It's calming and just sounds so wistful. "Drink with me today's gone by, To the life that used to be"
It honestly sucks that Grantaire's verse was cut in the movie, as it takes so much away from the song, but I think what a lot of people overlook is that in terms of overall importance and significance to the story, Marius' verse is more important, as Valjean overhears him saying that life without Cosette means nothing to him, therefore finding out that Marius and Cosette are in love, leading him to save Marius, making Marius the only survivor out of Les Amis, and therefore the story progresses, we get Empty chairs at empty tables, and Marius and Cosette get married
In the production I watched, when Grantaire sang his part, he grabbed Enjolras by the collar of his coat and pulled their faces so close. They're gay your honour
NOT A MUSICAL 🎵🎶🎼 FAN. 👎 THUMBS DOWN 👎 GOR "CATS AND PHANTOM" CATS ONLY HAD ONE DECENT SONG. YET, I REALLY LIKE THIS ONE. DOZENS OF WELL WRITTEN SONGS THAT TIED THE PLOT TOGETHER.
