Well well well, This Cat Woman has a new trick up her sleeves... an incredible rendition of I Dreamed a Dream. I wasn't quite prepared for this song and it floored me.
You probably know this already, but she won the best supporting actress oscar for this role. This particular performance brings a tear to my eye every time.
Anne Hathaway's mother played this same role on Broadway when she was a small child. She watched her in the role many times and was in awe of her mother's talent. Seeing her mother play Fantine was one of the biggest inspirations for her to become an actor herself.
Hugh does an incredible job also. The first 10-15 minutes of the movie. Eddie Redmayne was also incredible, he sings i think its called 'my friends' This movie they had live piano in their ears so they could react with they're emotions. It was incredible, the behind the scenes too
Devastating. A whole box of tissues needed for that performance. This is rare, even for an experienced and talented actor. By the way Chris, never appologise for showing your humanity, emotions are what we are.
Most theater geeks criticized her singing because it wasn't "THEATER" enough... but this was a Movie. Emotions HAVE to be heavier than the singing, and I think she did it JUSTICE. 🧡 WELL-DESERVED OSCAR.
These are some of the most emotional and moving lyrics I’ve ever heard and in the film, the way she speaks instead of sings at times really makes those emotions hit hard. “I dreamed that God would be forgiving,” is absolutely soul crushing to begin with. Then it’s accompanied by a completely live and incredibly raw vocal performance that TRULY sounds like a dying woman singing about the regrets of her life. There’s a level of authenticity here that I think is brilliant. You can fully believe this is her reality. I really think this performance will be legendary in the future because it’s legendary to me already.
She actually had her hair cut on the set in the previous song. She was astounding!!! As said before, none of the songs were recorded in studio, they were all recorded live.
My daughter and i went to see this and were mesmerized by the movie. No it wasn't like the Broadway performances but it was spell binding. There wasn't a sound in the theater except sniffing and when it was over there was a standing ovation and no one left with a dry eye and we didn't care if we were seen with tears running down our face. Just plain excellent!!
Oh trivia side note, her mother was the understudy for this role in the origional broadway production and Anne used to watch her at rehersals. Full circle moment
Never apologize for being strongly affected by such a performance - it's the greatest compliment you can pay to an actor. And it's a compliment to all of us out here on the internet, that you let us all see you feeling it. Thanks much for sharing, sir.
Firstly would like to thank u for the joy I've gotten from watching your reaction vids, secondly did u get around to watching Les miserables if so I hope it didn't disappoint,
There's a reason she won ALL the awards that year. Eddie Redmane managed make me cry for the first time during Empty Chairs at Empty tables. I had seen the show on stage multiple times, never cried during that song until I watched Eddie do it up close.
One of the things that makes this performance so spectacular to me is that in musical theatre, you almost _never_ have actors crying during musical numbers. It's an unspoke rule. Because crying while singing inevitably spoils the vocal performance. And because most of the audience isn't looking at the microexpressions of your face, since it's a theatre and they're all far away, _and_ you have the benefit of suspension of disbelief inherent to theatre - it's far, _far_ more important that the song be well sung. Doing this performance the way she did should've been a _recipe for disaster._ _Live_ vocals, recorded close-up and in situ _in one continuous take._ She has to convincingly ugly-cry, stay in character, _and_ sing beautifully for 5 minutes straight. It's not supposed to be _possible_ to simultaneously sing _and_ act this well.
WOW, great choice, some of the deepest and most tragic music ever in a musical. I loved Ann's performance. This movie was good, not all were my favorite performances. Russell Crowe's Stars was deeply disappointing, it is one of my favorite songs in the musical but fell flat for me. But this one, this one breaks me to my core. I cried a lot during the film but I thought she acted the heck out of this.
Russell Crowe was such a terrible choice. Like you said, he crashed and burned Stars. I love Philip Quast as Javert. He was in the 10th anniversary concert if you haven't watched that.
I always liked Ann Hathaway, but then I saw this performance and I truly and deeply respected her. Whatever else she does in her career she will always be able to point to this moment where she moved millions of people.
I’m not that cringe person on the internet who would say this about everything, but this is literally LITERALLY breath taking. The moment of resolve you talk about is the most underrated bit. It’s her realising she no longer has a life for herself, but she has to live for her daughter. Her soul has been torn out and is dead but her body must go on a little longer for her daughter. The whole thing is literally like idek words can’t describe
Just such an emotional beautiful scene, it breaks ones heart to hear. Anne Hathaway's performance was stellar. This will always be one of my favorite musicals.
The movie is fabulous. I've seen it at least 8 times and I full-on cry at least 5 different times during the movie. Eddie Redmayne singing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" is incredibly moving as well.
The way she mix her lines with the song is amazing. It pulls you back to the reality of the character for a moment just to throw you back again to fantasy
OMG...I've never heard this before..such an excellent recommendation! Ann...congrats on this performance,I've never seen something emotional like this. Chris....another excellent reaction... You were crying,Ann was crying and it made me cry too. :)
This performance is absolutely stunning and reduces me to tears each time I see it. Besides Anne's incredible singing, acting, and overall performance, the one thing that always stands out to me is that this is ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT. (This clip has 2 cuts at the very start, however, Anne sings "I Dreamed a Dream" in one shot.) According to an entry on the Trivia page of IMDB's entry for this film, it took 8 hours of filming to get this just right, however, it was the 4th take that was used for the film. The very IDEA that she did this more than once is amazing enough, but for 8 hours!?!? C'mon! She is truly amazing and all the awards were well earned and deserved.
I’ve never really sympathized with Marius, I mostly think his character is pointless. But Eddie’s performance was excellent and gave me both chills and a new perspective on the character.
I absolutely adore that performance as well, but I don’t know if I’d personally consider it equal. The range and sequence of emotion that Hathaway expresses is absolutely astounding, a lot of it with just facial expressions. I mean, she lets tears pour during the middle of the song, but by the end when she has let her grief transform first to anger, then resignation to her fate and lot in life, her eyes are dry. Breathtaking and crushing from start to finish.
I had quite the experience with this movie. The year it was released was my junior year of high school and we did a Les Mis marching show (band). We had a band of just shy of 300 people and we all flocked to the movie theaters in our show shirts the week it came out. I got to solo 'Bring Him Home' on my baritone. It was my favorite marching show. It convinced me to audition for drum major my senior year which I ended up getting
Hello Chris, I only knew Ann from comedies so far. We love to see her. But I didn't know that she also played such a dramatic role. I felt her pain. In every word. But her facial expressions are far more impressive than the voice, which is surprisingly good. In my respect, she climbed a great many steps. That was an outstanding acting performance. Thank you and Greetings from Germany
I wasn't sure about this movie since I'm a huge theater need and love the Broadway version but damn she had me ugly crying. It was so raw, unpolished and real, I felt her!😥❤👏🏼
This is why I watch your reactions, exactly what you said about about Ann Hathaway's acting, you are just as vulnerable in front of the camera with everyone watching. Thank you for that, for crying for real, as I do. Yes, you have to see the movie immediately. Enjoy every moment. It's amazing and incredible. Yes, stay vulnerable for us, keep it honest. That's so wonderful. 😀
I went to the cinema 5x to watch this because it was just mind blowing from start to finish and the director made a point of them all singing live instead of in a studio so it was that more raw, gritty and real. I have lost count how many times I have watched this musical film and each time it never fails to make me cry! In the cinema with me were people who had seen the theatre production all around the world and they said that you forgot that it was a film because every scene was like watching the stage production. You have to watch the whole film, I promise you will not be disappointed but you will have to stock up on boxes of tissues!!!
Ann Hathaway, wow, what can you say? When I heard this at the movie theater I just started crying. I said this is an award winning performance. Jennifer Hudson singing "I'm not Going" in Dreamgirls ....another Oscar award winner for her performance.
Anne Hathaway told it the way Fantine would have told it. That's how she got the same emotional reaction from moviegoers in 2012 that Fantine got from readers of Les Miserables in 1862. She says she began prepping for the part at the age of seven, when she saw her mother sing it as an understudy in the first US touring production of Les Miz. She was 29 when they shot this movie. I guess it helps to be well-prepared. Have you read Eugene V. Debs' essay, "Fantine in Our Time"? If you haven't, you should.
Just came across this reaction. It took years before I watched this movie. I’ve always loved the music and didn’t trust that the movie would do it justice, but was proven wrong. I watched it for the first time in 2014, Christmas Eve, and was obsessed! Now it’s my personal tradition to watch it every Christmas Eve.
I could not agree more strongly with your opinion , this makes me cry every time I see it , it's was such amazing acting . I actually love the whole movie because all the songs are sung by the actors , it gives it so much more emotion because they are actors , yes they might not be the best singers in the world ,but for me it adds to the believability of it all . The whole movie is incredible.
yes. you really need to see the whole film. they recorded ALL the songs live and they are all phenomenal. I promise you it will be a life-changing experience. I remember being a wreck in the theater by the end of the film and I couldn't wait to see it again lol she earned every bit of that Academy Award ❤️
Hi Larry Shair, I'm a massive movie buff and Les Miserable is the greatest musical of all time for me. I still cannot understand how Anne Hathaway did not get an Oscar nod for this performance. This was the finest Les Miserable movie ever made, as per comments below, the difference was all this acting and the singing was LIVE recorded. I believe Anne's performance in front of a camera with the emotional impact, is the best performance of this version I have ever seen. Mate got to agree with your reaction!!! Colm Wilkenson (the original Valjean) was awesome and Hugh Jackman was also exceptional. Nga Mihi brother from Aotearoa
She did win an Oscar for the role. I think it was a supporting actress award plus she may have won others that year. Supporting because she didn't have the lines, etc. required to win the Best Actress Oscar.
Chris, you really should see the movie....but you'll need a box of tissues, a packet won't be enough. My daughters and I went to see it when it was first shown....I went back 3 more times, one of my daughters, 6 times. Each time you could hear sniffs and sobs from the other cinema goers and at the end, everyone stood up and clapped. Something I've never seen in a cinema. My youngest daughter got the DVD and she watched it over and over and over and when a local musical theatre were doing a production of this version of Les Miserables she auditioned and blew the producers away. She got this part and boy was she good. I had no idea she was so talented. The musical ran for a week with two matinées. When I went to see her, the sniffs and stifled sobs filled me with awe for my daughters ability to portray such raw emotion. She was awarded a trophy on the last night for 'Star Performer'. Needless to say, she was totally drained at the end of that week. To date it is my favourite version of this musical. ❤🌹
My favorite performance of this song along with Lea Salonga's. I can't stop watching either of their performances of "I Dreamed A Dream" and Lea Salonga's performance of "On My Own".
The actors had an earbud in which a bare-bones piano track would give them some indications of the music, but they sang live and the actual orchestration was then added to follow their own pace. I'll add that, if you're going to watch the whole movie (and you really, really should), the thing to bear in mind about Russell Crowe is that he's not a musical-theatre singer. Still, I've loved this musical since the original French version was created in the 1980's, before it went to RSC and became what we all know today, and Russell Crowe is the first actor who's managed to make me feel sympathy for Javert. His singing might be different from the rest of the company, but this was a superb performance so far as I'm concerned.
The one thing I have to say about this performance: she outshines the song itself. At certain moments Anne had to adjust to the song's structural limits. With her abilities she could easily have altered it and and by doing that have created an even better song. I raise my hat to such an incredible talent. I know the song by others but this was indeed on a whole different level. So authentic. A standing ovation without trying to be theatrical about it.
When moments like this clip unexpectedly swerve into our lane we have an opportunity to drive a bar into the ground and mark the place where someone finally sang and articulated a pain or grief we have been carrying for too long, unable to put it in the ground until it could be named, expressed, articulated and dramatized and painted in blood. These are the experiences that in the end untied all of us in varying degrees. We all get our chance on the rack no matter how much money we have or the things we possess, and it is performances like this that finally free us to scream and cry and drive that iron bar into the ground and leave it behind.
Enjoy the movie! It really is amazing. One thing I learned was that they had the score adapted around the acting to allow each actor to make their own interpretations of the songs.
LOVE YOUR REACTIONS, you let your soul show, Thank YOU. Suggestion, The Impossible Dream- from - Man of La Mancha just a note many military sung this in Vietnam, was close to my husbands heart
She was feeling this role.( Maybe she was also using the pain she in from her personal life at the time) She had a lot going on. She did such an amazing job. This is the only show I have seen that was so worth the money . I have seen the off-Broadway version and watched the movie, both worth me saving my money to be able to go. Your honest reaction was a joy to see. If you react to gospel please watch Laura Dingle she has gotten me thu so much.
The whole movie is amazing, I am not use to musicals, so the first 15-20 minutes was hard for me, but the acting is breathtaking. I cried hard through some parts of the movie, one of the best cinema experiences of all time for me and I watch about 50 movies on average a year in the cinemas, have done that over the last 30 years, have also seen different other les miss movies, but this hits harder
Yes!!! I was hoping someone would mention it. I wish he would release it as a solo on his channel but he would need Chris, Rob, and Tim to back him. 🥰 Makes me cry everytime and major goosebumps.
Ann is an amazing actress and a very good singer. I have enjoyed her performances in everything I've seen her in. She rips hearts out in this one. In Ella Enchanted she cracks us up.
I had seen Les Mis on stage a few times when the movie came out and I felt a little disappointed with the first song when it wasn't "theatrical" but more conversational, like the actor was right next to me telling his story. But quickly, that intimacy became the best part of the movie. I have to admit that I sat here chuckling at you as you tried to hold it together while tears were in my eyes! This song gets to me every time!
I have now watched this version probably 15 times as well as several of the other versions. I can never get enough of Les Miserables , and I always cry my way through!!
hi this is very very late but i had to come say just. you are the first person I've seen react to this in such a truly raw way. and in a way that feels like you GET what was being shown here. the singing wasn't technical perfection but it WAS emotional perfection. it effects me right now this moment the same way it effected you in this video and the same way it effected me the first time i saw it. i really really appreciate that!
You.are.a.treasure!!! No pressure, but I look forward each day to your reaction…. So honest and vulnerable and moving. Again you.are.a.treasure!!!! This song is even more powerful when watching the entire movie! Enjoy your movie night tonight.:)
Thanks for doing this reaction! Ann Hathaway gave a stunning performance. I have a terrible memory, so maybe someone can help me out here. I think she was nominated for an Academy Award for this? Did she win? She should have. I hope you throw in more movie clips here and there. Enjoy the movie. I thought Russell Crowe was kind of an odd choice for his part, but the rest of the cast is fantastic!
This is my first time watching this clip. I don't usually like Anne Hathaway very much. But she blew this song away! Every lyric ripped my heart right out of my chest and I absolutely bawled like a baby.
Don't know if in the 275 comments if this was mentioned, but I believe there was only the director present with her while she did this incredible performance. He wanted the intimacy of not having an entire crew watching her. The music was playing through a very small earpiece hidden in her ear. You can tell the intimacy by the shallow focusing of the camera he used. Also, I believe she did only 2 takes of this one long shot. Others will correct me if I'm off on my information. But it's what I remember from the documentary I saw when the movie first came out. It took Annie a while to get into the headspace to perform this song and took her a while to get out of it. It's the most powerful performance I've ever seen of this song. As with this song, almost all of the songs in the movie were sung live during the shoot. Incredible feat.
There is another rendition of this song, sung in the tv show Glee, performed by the great Idina Menzel and Lea Michelle. It gives the song a broader meaning, and it's wonderfully done. The premise of this plot is that a mother had to give up her daughter to adoption when she was very young, and destiny had their paths cross later when the child is in high school and the mother is a teacher there. The teacher knows that is her daughter, but the daughter doesn't know that was her mom (at least I don't think so). This moment in the clip is when the mother created a cassette tape message to the daughter to tell her who she was. The song is performed in a dream sequence that the lyrics actually applies to both mother and daughter's dream of meeting each other some day. It was great. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_7zZuBQs0bE.html
