Great demo! Thanks. The more gain there was, the less difference I heard, but I think I favor the DC clean and with minimal OD. Vinoo's comments were spot on, especially about the DC being 'halfway to an ES. Wish I could justify buying one.

Dude you are amazing and at the same time you look so experienced! Which is why I ask you this... can you make a video about common mistakes in Self-taught guitarists like bad grips or wrong posture which can lead to pain in important zones as the wrist or back, warming up exercises... I think is something important every guitarist should know because I've found myself and many other guitarists with some of these problems and the first site we look up for help is RU-vid, and there isn't like clear stuff, so I hoped you might know about the topic. That would be it! Thank you for your videos man, great help to begginners and self-taughts :)

I thought the LP had a little more output in the first clip. The gainer clips sounded about the same to me. I have a big fat Traditional too. Personally love the feel, but I don't do a lot of shredding on the top few frets either.
@briankoch504
@briankoch504 6 лет назад
I have a 98 dc, sounds huge, thick creamy tone, holds up just fine to my other Les Paul's, it's a great soloing guitar... Total different experience from any other Les Paul considering the 24 frets. Upper Fred access is just amazing, I have big hands and on my regular Les Paul's it's a little more difficult to be messing around up there. I'm actually considering selling a few of my Paul's and picking up a few more double cuts. I'll always keep a regular Paul around though just to have that wood mass... They definitely make you play different. The double cut I'm more articulate, it's just such a fast neck that it's hard to slow down on it. When you do slow down and let notes hang the complexity is there, the harmonic balance that rings out from a single note can put you in that players high zone... Haven't played any of the new ones so I can't vouch for them, but if you're looking go get a 98, you won't be disappointed

Just beautiful melodies, Darrell. And you know how I prefer the clean tone. The Les Paul had less sawtooth wave, while the double cut had a fatter tone but with increased distortion. I have found this also between Squire and Fender pickups. Having purchased a Dean double cut 12 string, I replaced the muddy high distortion pickups with Gibson's 490R & 498T. It's like night and day bro! And as I have told you before, as a novice guitarist, I'll never be able to spend the hours of practice like I have with the classical training in violin from my youth, but I adore the tone of a good instrument, even when playing Mary Had A Little Lamb.

Cool video, and as always, really great playing. To my ears through RU-vid (and their compression algorithms), the two are almost indistinguishable. Maybe the traditional sounds slightly thicker (whatever that means!). But it sort of depends on how you are articulating. I think they can react differently with different articulation pressures and velocities. So hard to tell! What do you think, sitting in the room with them?

Darrell -- From how you described the construction of the DC, it sounded very similar to my CS-336, which was the first of the LP-sized semi-hollow guitars Gibson came out with 15 years ago or so. It has a mahogany body with a center block with a maple top, f-holes, solid mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard. Compared to a solid-bodied LP, it sounds closer to an ES335. I'm looking for a DC that would sound more like a LP than a semi-hollow. Do you have any thoughts on this? BTW -- Great demo. Thanks.

@jamesbolton77
@jamesbolton77 3 года назад
Have you done any comparisons between the chambered 2016-2017 LP DC and the solid 2020-2021 LP DC? In particular, I understand the 2020-2021 has the Gibson 60's slim-taper neck; any differences in previous versions? I understand the '58 re-issues have a chunky/thick neck; I would love to know the neck types of the flame-top DC's by their various years particularly the slim-taper necks. I had a perfect slim-taper on a 2018 ES 335 -- and I am trying to get back to it -- but want this LP DC. -- Thanks

To my eyes, I love the look of your LPDC, that color is amazing! To my ears, your LP Trad wins! They do sound very similar in the bridge position but the burst neck pickup is just magic!!! I could tell by your actions that they do play very differently! Does the DC have the asymmetric neck carve? I also watched again to make sure the DC was 22 frets ! If it were 24, that can make a huge difference in the neck pickups tone. What are the difference in pickups between the two guitars? Just curious...
@DarrellBraunGuitar
@DarrellBraunGuitar 6 лет назад
+Michael Hermsmeyer Hi! Yeah, both are 22 frets. The pickups are similar (Burstbuckers and '59 Tributes) but the '59s are not quite as bright as the burstbuckers. Just a regular carve on the DC.

Thanks for the vid! IMHO, the double-cut LP sounded OK but with no character, and could have been any one of a hundred guitars. The traditional one definitely had more balls (or more arse/bottom end) and had desirability in its rich tone, though not sounding like a great LP might. When I played LPs, I never had any problem with access to the high jobbies, but I do like the look if not the colour) of the double thingy. (I've never had a prob with my faithful old Tele, either.) As for controls, I had some very specific 2PU mixes that I used, so again the SC LP wins. Weight doesn't bother me.

Damon Faridi I will tell you this: A friend of mine gave me a Squier Fat Strat (Affinity) and a Fender Frontman amp that he bought in a beginner combo deal when he thought he wanted to learn to play. I have been playing for 25 years and I was highly impressed with the Strat! I've owned American Standard Stratocasters that didn't play half as good as the cheap Squier he gave me. I am a Gibson man through and through, but if you prefer Fender's tones and don't want to pay a lot, I would highly recommend the Squier. You can usually find the bundle deal that the one I have came in for around $200. However, if you prefer Gibson, Epiphones are solid low cost alternatives. I have owned quite a few over the years. Just thought I'd offer my opinion, hope it helps!

The neck pickup on that double cutaway is so rich in tone! Thanks for another fun video :). Take care!

Hi Darrel ! Is that a Traditional Pro V or I’m mistaken ?

They both sound really good. The single seems to have a barely perceptible thicker bottom end, but overall they are pretty similar. Maybe a double cut will be a nice companion to my heavy '74 black LP Custom.

Hey love all your videos, especially the comparisons. I’ve been searching for a DC in that color for years. Let me know if you ever want to sell or even trade I have several high end guitars

Great Video! A few things: I founded the Traditional to be more muffled and the DC to be more open, but I feel like it might have something to do with the covered pickups vs the exposed pickups. Also, the differences in the sound might be related to the tone controls being engaged. I think that you need to mention what are the tone and volume are set to (optimally they will we both set on 10)

+Amit Sapir Thanks! Yes, the settings (volume and tone) were all at 10 👍

thanks! also, i listened to tracks with with the same pickups that are on the DC (burstbuckers pro's) and they did sound more muffled than the ones on your DC, and those i listened to were covered

Excellent review; makes it so easy to compare the 2 guitars. Very well-planned sequence of sounds. The SC sounds "beefier" as someone here said, with fatter and more authoritative midrange. The DC sounded halfway to an ES, to my ears, with an airiness that gives its sound a more sensitive feel - a confident-sounding guitar that does not need to raise its voice to catch your attention. The comparatively lower mid-levels gives its treble a somewhat brighter, crisper feel. Great guitars. Good review. Good to hear both. Thanks

They both sounded amazing to me. Thanks for the comparison. Don't ever change, Darrell! Your vids are so thorough and logical, and the playing is of course top-notch. I'll keep coming back as much as I can for as long as you're making videos.

I like the double cutaway Les Paul. I might just consider gettin' one myself one day.
