I caught a pretty big female walleye this spring that had these warts on one side. This was on the Hudson River in upstate NY. I did wonder at the time because i never seen one this bad before. Its all catch n' release in this section anyways but your video did answer some concerns i had. Thanks guys! Fish on! 🐟🎣

I caught one covered in walnut sized growths a few years ago in the Saginaw river. It looked nasty, I picked the hook out with a stick and kicked it back in.

lol. They are unsightly for sure. But just remember that there are all sorts of disease out there, many of which show no exterior symptoms. And yet we handle and eat those fish without knowing it. Cooking meat thoroughly solves a lot of problems. This biggest concern for any disease is when you are handling/cleaning the fish. That is when you have the highest chance of contracting something bad. Still, it’s hard to look at some of these fish without the cringe factor.

It's been quite a few years since I've seen it on little bay denoc, I do know it makes skinning a bit of a pain.

I would rather not even try to eat something infected with anything! Are people that hungry or just stupid enough that they would try to feed this to their family.?Throw them back and catch a clean one, it's that simple. Not trying to put anyone down but imagine if it were in a grocery store. Would you buy it? Really?

I hear what you are saying. That said, these viruses just happens to be ones that show external signs. You have likely eaten many fish with other viruses and just didn’t know it because the signs weren’t obvious.

@@thegreatlakesfisherman I have a simple way of testing fish before it's eaten or cooked. Cut a small piece, bout the size of a dime, put it on a piece of paper towel. Put in the microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute. If it starts arcing it has accumulated metals in it to a point that we as sportsman who like to eat our catch should be aware of.

What to expect in filthy city waters. Poor fish.

The fish live in Lake Erie and just move into the river during the spawn. Not sure that the virus is caused by city water considering the water is fairly clean these days.
