I heard an interview with Lesley in the past year. She said Judy's Turn to Cry was a well-written and well-produced song, a better song than It's My Party. But, she said it was mean spirited and even back in 1963 she felt a little bad about wishing Judy such pain. Go Lesley.
She was such a class act. Never a bad word from her or about her. She was an integral part of the wonderful golden era of pop music. I will always remember her with affection and listen to her music with the same passion I did back in the the day. RIP Lesley and know you are in the hearts of millions.
I've been a big fan of Leslie's since the mid-60's. I still love her old songs. They bring back many happy memories. She came out of the closet several years ago. I guess that she really wanted Judy, instead of Johnny, all along.
Notice the dancer running like a crazed deer from the lower right corner of the screen at 0:40? Do you suppose she wasn't paying attention and suddenly realized that she had missed her cue? No one probably noticed at the time ... But that's one of the joys of RU-vid -- watching something over and over again until unexpected details start to emerge.
Led by a young producer named Quincy Jones, and a staff of seasoned musicians, all Lesley Gore had to do was show off her tremendous voice to some of the best pop tunes of the 60's. By branching out into acting, she showed the world what an immense talent she truly was. RIP Lesley.
stephen dwyer Not getting into any e mail fight; go look up either his history or hers and you will find he was the producer in NY for her records; King-Goffin and Mann-Weiss wrote some of her tunes but didn't produce them.
She will be sorely missed by us all. A great singer and performer. The joy that she brought so many through her music will live forever. To all the kids that popped on the 45 and cranked it up and danced.
Great follow up to "Its my Party" She didn't write her own songs. Myself as a straight man I have no problems with her being a Lesbian(As that was her sexual preference). Also she was Jewish, was probably hard on her also. She stood the test of time. I have a deep respect for her.She was a real cutie and good singer.
The music industry had a lots of talented entertainers and singers and writers that was Jewish back then like Carole King, Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, Barbra Streisand, Engelbert Humperdinck, Mel torme, Ringo Starr, Neil Sedaka and Neil Diamond "Cracklin Rose" Peter Tork of the Monkees
I wouldn't have Johnny back on a silver platter, personally. If he's that willing to walk off with other girls....I'd tell Judy to use him in good health, and while she can, because while she stole him, he went too easily...and he'd do it with others. I grew up on oldies like "It's My Party" but I didn't hear "It's Judy's Turn to Cry" until recently.
What an era of music! Entertainers dressed up and the background singers dressed up too. Lovely to see. We'll never see these days again when American singers take pride in how they look when they perform. Treasure these videos! Thanks for posting.
+Petr Slivinski Yes, actually I totally agree with you I am always banging on about it. In my day - I was a London teenager - the only thing that came off was Sandie Shaws shoes. Its such a shame that that kind of innocence is lost isn't it.
Roz Drew I visited London with the current music scene that was great and the surrounding areas were just as great. Saw the Beatles and then Herman's Hermits, The Kinks, The Mindbenders, Peter and Gordon, Chad and Jeremy, and Petula Clark. I could name many that were beginning their career and would soon be chart toppers. Love those days! My girl (now my wife) and I and our mates would stroll around London and the surrounding areas plus the countryside. England was beautiful in all seasons and a great time to be had making wonderful memories. Happy Holidays to you! Be safe and be well!
It's a reply song to famous hit "It's My Party". In that one, the singer is having a party and Johnny is HER boyfriend and disappears with Judy. When they come back Judy's wearing his ring." So I stand by my saying, Judy got hers, although Johnny wasn't much to depend on either, was he?
I liked to hear this song long ago and I remember so many things of that last year in High School when I hear it. Nice memories this song brings to me.
OMG! My mom gave me this 45 when I was a little girl - played it until I stopped using my record player.......Thanks for the post - a real trip down memory lane. :-)
Fawk Yu I really pity you. Your comments seem to reveal a young person (if that is your photo) who comes across (if that is your intent) so maladjusted that you are filled with anger and rage at what you perceive to be the unfairness of the world. And by extension, people who post comments here. You seem jealous and envious of anyone who find happiness and joy, such as Donna Simms. You lash out at a stranger. Why? You use profanity (your screen name) and your insulting comments (“raising cocks every night”) in order to shock and therefore impress people. It’s also called “internet bullying.” Are you trying to shock people? Not me. Intimidate them? Not a bit. Demonstrate your grasp of English? Hardly. Show us your soaring intellect? Uh, don’t think so. No, you probably haven’t succeeded at anything, especially relationships, so you are trying to make a name for yourself as some kind of “tough dude” through the anonymity of the internet. So, you are going to spend the rest of your life, not acting like a responsible adult, but instead, trolling RU-vid for years and years and insulting people you have never met and know nothing about? Just to get attention? What a sad life; I do feel sorry for you. Perhaps sometime you will learn to treat people with respect, courtesy, and compassion. I certainly hope so--for your benefit, as well as theirs.
I wanted a pair of those white GO GO boots when i was young but my mom said no. Those were the in boots to have. I love the oldies. Lots of good memories. thanks for sharing this.
I was born in 1957. I don't remember hearing it when it came out, but when I started to listen to KRTH 101.1 in Los Angeles oldies radio station I got to hear how much American music was better than what came from Britain. KRLA with Art Laboe on AM also played oldies back in the mid seventies too.
Just like there was great music in the 60's, there was great music in the 70's, 80s', 90's, 00's and today. I think once people get a certain age, they think any kind of music produced after their teens/20's is garbage and that is simply not the case. Music has evolved and yes, there is bad music out today but there is alot of good music too. Open you minds folks!
The best about that decade is there are no auto tunes and you could hear all the instruments not like now when half of music is done by a computer ,, and just the hair the clothes I love it and love the songs,, I grew up in the 90 but really just love the 60 and 70 music ❤♥
I didn't really appreciate her back then as I was more into Motown artists and I thought Ms. Gore wasn't exciting enough. Fortunately, over the years as I matured, I learned to appreciate her style of performance. She's not like a Ronnie Spector but I definitely enjoy Ms. Gore',s performances and I felt bad about her passing. I have most of her songs and I still listen to them with great pleasure. 🤓👍
Lesley Gore! I remember seeing this on Shindig way back when. Teri Garr is one of the background dancers. I like the way the Blossoms, the Wellingtons, and the rest all take their places.
@CanadaguyRudey...are you stuck in a 60's rut there canadaguyrudey? I adore today's music - as much as I adore music from the 60's. I love glam rock, metal, rap, punk -I love it all. I am glad I am not as closed minded about music as you. Why not give it a chance? You might just find something that makes you feel young.
@Deuce2you Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm never able to put my thoughts into words about that and you just did it flawlessly. Thank you for making sense.
Judy was capricious, ungrateful, rebellious. Judy found out that her grandfather was going to the party, Judy started to cry. Daddy asked: Why are you crying? Judy said: It's my party and I'll cry if I want to! Judy's father worked with Lesley Gore's production.
Johnny got around, he was Shelley's Johnny Angel, then he got with Judy at Lesley's Party, then he dumped Judy and got back with Lesley, then Shelley found out Johnny Loves me!
@CreepyCrawlyCat What has Lesley written for Bob Dylan? Lesley did limited songwriting in the 60s..her first songs were on her 3rd Mercury album, Boys, Boys, Boys. It wasn't until after college and she left Mercury Records that she devoted a lot of time to songwriting. Her first collection of songs was released on MoWest Records in 1972, an album titled: Someplace Else Now. Another album in 1976 followed, titled: Love Me By Name. She wrote for the FAME soundtrack also.
Judy's Turn To Cry is a bit of a sequel song to It's My Party by Lesley Gore. The narrator of the song notes that her boyfriend, Johnny, broke up with her in the lyrics to It's My Party, planning on marrying Judy. Only to dump Judy and go back to the narrator of the song--go figure! But the question remaining is- "Did she keep johnny or break up with him soon after getting him back?" And yes, I know that Lesley Gore is a lesbian, but I'm reffering to the character in the song taking "Johnny" back. But all in all this was and is a very good song done by a very good artist.
Yes, Lesley took Johnny back in Judy's Turn To Cry but she dumped him in her song, I'm Coolin', No Foolin'. "Since all your vows just proved untrue, the other foot now wears the shoe. Here's your farewell and there's the door, I just won't play these games no more!". Song is from Lesley's third album, Boys, Boys, Boys. She also told her guy, "Don't Call Me, I'll Call You!"
