I think a lot of people don't know how to use oils and butters. The oils and butters come from indigenous African hair techniques, rituals and practices. I'm African, so the idea that they're somehow not beneficial will never makes sense to me. I think people should do what works for them. I actually found that some of the way that the no oils and butters educators presented the no oils no butters completely disregarded the fact that these are traditional practices. These are people's cultures we're talking about.

I agree with you about the braids with extensions thing, i believe those extensions actually dehydrate the hair and a lot of them are toxic and have been found to cause cancer in women but I disagree with only using rinse out conditioners and no leave ins. I just had to cut off almost 5 inches of hair due to key hole splits and breakage due to following the “no oils or butters” method. Yes they were correct about shampooing more frequently and using less products but deep conditioners and leave ins are very important. I’ve seen other ladies online who also followed the method who have had to do big chops because of it. If it works for you that’s fine, but i also thought it was working for me until i realized how dehydrated and damaged my hair was.

did you partner with a curl specialist? what was your routine? how long did you follow the routine for? what other products were you using? at any point to you start blending natural hair industry routines with curl specialist guidance?

@@sigh_yuri we don’t really have curl specialists in Capetown, I followed the instructions of the curl specialists who introduced the method, I washed, conditioned and styled once a week, I used Olaplex, Camille rose, Uncle Funky’s and Aunt Jackie’s. When I noticed some webbing and breakage I tried to course correct by introducing leave ins back into my regimen but the damage was already done, my strands had key hole splits and fairy knots and the webbing was crazy. It was heartbreaking but I made up my mind to do a mini big chop cos I didn’t want to leave any damage behind. I cut off about 5 inches and started using moisturizing shampoo, clarifying bi-weekly, deep conditioning twice a week and using leave ins and butters and oils again. So far so good, my hair doesn’t feel dry anymore, no more webbing and fairy knots, reduced washing and deep conditioning to once a week, I also keep my hair in chunky twists most of the time now. I’m not the only one this happened to, checkout Brittany Mia, AfrikanHairGod, Rosie Amelia and Shelly V.

Love your vids so much. ❤ I used to wear braids back to to back because I was obsessed with the new growth and seeing my hair growth but my hair was so dry and brittle each time I took down my braids. My hair was growing but i retained no length. my scalp environment was unhealthy and my ends were split so bad. wearing my hair out full time with no hair added has helped so much. and i obsess over health instead of length now

i'm the same way. just like i had mentioned in the video, i have no idea how long my hair can get bc i've never given my hair the chance to get to that point, for exactly this same reason. i lament this information taking so long to find me; imagine how my hair would look if i had found it in high school, or even right when i decided to go completely natural in 2018.

sometimes i’ll ask a black girl with long hair how she cares for it and they usually say they don’t know how to or they do minimal effort🤣ppl go by looks but it’s the results and research that are important

I wore crochet braids back-to-back for the last few years because I grew accustomed to having long hair and I felt less feminine with my short 4c hair. Once I started finding bald spots along my scalp after taking the braids out, I knew it was time to let them go for a while and let my hair breathe. It was no longer a protective style when my hair was breaking off and constantly dry. I've started wearing my natural hair out again and although I miss having braids, it feels so freeing and I'm still getting compliments. I plan to keep my hair routine simple and wash it weekly and keeping it moisturized.

Nah, I'm gonna stick with my oils and butters. I feel only water or ingredients that draw in water to the hair is not moisturizing alone, it's definitely hydrating but the oils and butters in products or even raw oils and butters(used properly, as in diluting it if it's too thick) helps to seal the hydration therefore moisturizing the hair. Atleast that's what works for me. Everytime I've only used conditioner, or leave in conditioner with little to no oils and butters, my hair was dry by the next day. The oils and butters helped the water to not evaporate as much since its hydrophobic. And since i wash my hair once a week because i don't want to be in my hair all the time and I've actually devloped scalp problems and dryness from washing my hair too frequently so once a week works for me since leaving it too long also causes problems.

moisture and hydration are directly from water, that's the only thing that can moisturize the hair. products don't provide moisture; that's rhetoric created by the natural hair industry to get you to buy their products bc they know dry hair is an insecurity many naturals have. you can't seal moisture into the hair; water will always evaporate. that doesn't change when oil is brought into the picture. the hydrophobic properties of oil don't prevent water from escaping, it pushes water away from itself and then blocks water from coming in, so you're actually promoting dehydrating, that's why your hair was dry the next day. it wasn't bc you didn't use them, it was bc you did. the feeling you think is moisture is just built up grease from the oils and butters in your hair. when your hair is dry, that means it's time to wash it again. with the proper changes made to your routine, this is very manageable. the scalp problems and the dryness are likely bc of your usage of oils and butter, as well as frequent usage of shampoos with too high of a strength.

master cosmetologist & holistic hair healer here please stick to what you are doing. Your experience with the oils and butters assisting to keep the moisture in the hair is correct and but one benefit of using them raw or in formulated products. The cleaner the formulation the better. There are too many voices in this space without the education or experience to speak to natural hair and scalp care in a qualified and accurate manner.

@@sigh_yuri no, when I started I actually started on a clean slate, meaning I was practically bald. I hadn't oiled my hair in 5 months prior to me shaving my hair either(I was in a bad place and my hair started to tangle up pretty bad so I just decided to shave it all off) and I did washed my hair everyday for 2 months or more and then got lazy and washed and conditioned my hair every 3 or 4 days for 3 or so months before I then started using leave ins that had very little oil content and it just didn't work for me until I actually started using raw Shea butter to help, as Shea butter by itself also didn't cut it as my hair felt heavy and it also didn't make the moisture last longer. And when I mean by sealing in the moisture I don't mean that water won't completely evaporate, I mean it slows down the process of evaporation and since again, I wash my hair frequently in my opinion, I have no need to re moisturize my hair as washing my hair gives me a clean slate already. In any case this has been working for me. I've been retaining way more length than when I did in my 1/6 of an inch hair and TWA phase.

I get braids 2-4 times a year just for the style and it's never in for more than month because i have to properly wash my hair. I still try to wash my hair in braids. I am not sure why people think back braids without recovery is healthy honestly. As was as going months without giving your hair an actual wash lol

the loudest voice is the most accepted, and unfortunately the loudest voice for the natural hair community is itself and its own industry. the industry uses that to its advantage when they “teach” naturals how to do their hair and sell them the products they “need” for it.
