As someone who just started their natural hair journey, this video is a godsend! It's refreshing to see you don't entertain the nonsense that black hair is somehow "different" and should be held to different hygiene standards.
Honestly, minus the no oils thing. This is pretty much how you’re supposed to take care of locs. Now I don’t wash my hair every 7-10 days but I keep a spray bottle of water that I apply daily and oil like once a week because the creams and gels cause build up. Outside of that, water is my main moisturizer. It always shocks people when I tell me I only use oil and water on my locs. They expect them to be dry. I wish people understood water is the only way to keep your hair moisturized.
After taking the tips from this video I used used the Shea moisture low porosity line, silicon mix hair treatment, gel from an aloe Vera leaf and the teeniest bit of olive oil eco styler. This video is revolutionary. My hair has never felt so lightweight yet moisturized. I’m so happy rn 🥹Thank you so much and you deserve to blow up big time
yaaaaaaay 🤸🏽♀️🤸🏽♀️🤸🏽♀️ thats exactly what i do this for and i love to hear it!! dont forget that besides the products, the stylists i get my info and haircare from are also listed so you can keep learning and keep increasing the ease you get with your hair! the video may be revolutionary, but i will always give them their flowers bc they saved my life to be quite honest with you 😭 i wouldnt be able to speak on any of this without them
@@jyesthamarsI just cut the sides with the spikes off, then cut the leaf in half to expose the jelly and scrape it with a spoon to extract the juice :)
I really appreciate this as someone who doesn't have access to a curl specialist because you really clarify the technique. Keep up the good work, we might win the battle against texturism in our lifetime and we have definitely won it in our personal lives atleast
I'm definitely interested to see how this works out long term. Most of the influencers in my timeline are 4C girls with waist length hair or longer who use oils and butters, solely finger detangle, air dry, and wash less frequently than once a week. And the rest are women who tried the no butters, no oils thing then had to chop off a lot of damage after a couple of years. 🤷♀️
@@sigh_yuriI’m curious about this too Miss Saiuri. I tried the no oils/butters for a year and enjoyed it, but once I hit 3 inches I started having issues with dryness, tangling and breakage. Added them back in and I’m at mid back a year and a half later (don’t let the baldie pic fool you 😜) Now that you’ve been on it 4 years, do you feel you’re retaining a good amount of length?
The cold water part had me screaming in praise. I been sold that lie since I was in high school (I'm in my 30s now so yeah). Thank you, sharing this with all my friends and family. Love all your content!
im so glad!! even when i heard that i was like “welp i guess my cuticles gon jus have to be open cuz i cant shower in cold water unless im dying of heat.” good to know it wasnt doing me any harm in the first place!!
Woah! Sometimes I get overwhelmed with the semantics of the natural hair care community. There’s so much info out there, it’s refreshing to see someone keeping it simple! I didn’t know that I did not have to seal in hydration with oils and butters. My hair may be suffering from dehydration, this video was very insightful! I’m def gonna rethink the way I moisturize my hair lol.
Love how you apply conditioner. My hair is almost the same length as you and I've been applying waaaaaaay too much conditioner. I'll start using your method
yeah this method def helps your conditioner go farther! i still run out of it before shampoo cuz im a person with hair just like everybody else struggles with it - i’ve only run out of both at the same time ONCE in the almost four years i’ve been washing my hair like this - but its definitely not as bad as it was before cuz im actually working the product into the hair instead of just letting it sit in clumps on top of it.
okay i was convinced and inspired by your lived experience of doing this for years and seeing this video to try this at home!. Today what i tried: 1) the washing and conditioning and detangling in the shower bit with some water mixed with the rinse out conditioner when i used a regular comb, 2) also tried mixing the matching partner conditioners for the regular & moisturizing shampoos respectively.3) t i found that i have one of those attachable even flow head covering thing that you attach to a hand held dryer- the results were good, air got dry... lol. Next steps: Maybe I'll order one of the hair detangling tools you used in the shower and save up for a curl specialist. In summary, thank you for this video!! keep educating us Saiuri! because we are ready for change!
As someone who used to follow this advice, I fear you may end up destroying your hair lipid barrier with the harsh shampoo and not replacing the oils that would naturally lubricate your hair. Everyone must learn for themselves, good luck and I sincerely hope you adjust the moment you start experiencing dryness.
i sincerely hope you adjust your understanding of how the hair's lipid barrier comes to be, as well as shampoo strengths and how they actually work. oil is produced by the scalp, and my scalp has never stopped producing oil. additionally, that's what the oils in my moisturizing shampoo and my conditioners are for. i fear you may end up falling victim to fear-mongers who would have a lot to lose (especially financially and egotistically) by people adjusting their mindset on how to take care of naturally curly hair. but like you said, everyone must learn for themselves, and as someone who has followed this advice for three years *without going back to my old habits,* constantly listened to curl specialists, and was willing to stay the course and trust the process, my hair has never been dry; it's actually the healthiest and most moisturized my hair has ever been. good luck.
Hey Saiuri, Thankyou so much for this video, it’s been an eye-opener for me! I feel for us as black women because we’ve been miseducated in so many ways that are hurtful to us especially when it comes to our hair. Which is why it’s so refreshing and such a relief to see honest videos like these. I had a couple of questions on things within the video I was unclear about. What is a hair topper and why is it needed? And do you use the daily conditioner listed in your description everyday?
Had to come back to this video and say thank you for showing this process! I was doing my wash and gos out of the shower with a spray bottle 😅 which was very stressful and increasing the time! I now do my wash and go in the shower = extra hydration for my curls + less abuse of overusing products (b/c my hair wasn’t hydrated enough) + reclaiming my time 🥰♥️. Still a journey but it just got easier!
girrrrrrrl i remember the spray bottle days 😭😭😭 almost gave myself carpal tunnel callin mysel "moisturizing" my hair like that. it's so much easier now. hold on to the spray bottle tho!! if you get flies/mosquitoes easily, they're easier to catch cuz they can't fly when their wings are wet 😉
Hey Saiuri, Thank-you so much for this video, it’s been an eye-opener for me! I feel for us as black women because we’ve been miseducated in so many ways that are hurtful to us especially when it comes to our hair. Whether it’s to line the pockets of cooperations seeking to make a dollar off us or those of our own desperate to make a come-up off our ignorance. Which is why it’s so refreshing and such a relief to see honest videos like these. I had a couple of questions on things within the video I was unclear about. What is a hair topper and why is it needed? And do you use the daily conditioner listed in your description everyday?
The community needs a reset! I’m a younger millennial and I’ve been seeing the same propoganda since 2014 😭 this video has been an UN-LEARNING process for me. Because why was I adding 7 products to my hair in the first place?! That amongst other things, but anyways, thank you sis. Please keep going, and trust the girlies are paying attention 👀
I use Uncle Funky's daughter curly magic and I create Hold combo. After watching your video, I realized I haven't been smoothing out the gel and styling. I've been shaking my hair to get rid of the excess water. I'll start smoothing and styling to see how that goes. 😊 Thanks for this video. ❤
@sigh_yuri Yeah, I would sit right under the dryer after I shook my hair. I never smooth, rake, and style. I washed my hair earlier and did it just way you did. I love how it turned out now that I styled it before the hooded dryer. Thank you. 😊❤❤
Going off the shampoo comment: I used to go by that rule. I started washing it with shampoo from every 7 days to 1-2 months (I water wash in between) and I was finally able to break my plateau of bra strap length so it’s different for everyone.
I made the dreaded mistake of using the AG Balance shampoo as my only shampoo every week for like 4 months straight 😞 my hair was dehydrated and I had the worst split ends I’ve ever had
@sigh_yuri my stylist said once ppl go through the detox it can often be too cleansing and sometimes has to be removed as a weekly cleanser. Def varies per client
Hey Saiuri, thank you so much for this video! How do you then style your hair everyday in between washes? I did this today but now how do I "freshen up" my hair tomorrow morning?
hey! i take my hands and fluff it, if i'm short on time or just don't feel like it, i'll take my blow dryer, attach the concentrator, and put it on the cool setting with high speed to fluff it more quickly
im not sure bc i haven’t needed one in ages (i dont have color treated hair or other hair problems) but i would likely sit under the dryer. if im getting a deep conditioner its bc my stylist is giving it to me so they’ll tell me how to use it
they dont seal in moisture. moisture comes from water. oil is hydrophobic (pushes water away). you’re doing the direct opposite when you oil your hair and scalp. you dont need to seal it in, you need to replenish it by washing your hair.
this routine does moisturize the scalp. notice the shampoo being rubbed into it. shampoo removes buildup which allows moisture (water) to enter the hair and scalp.
