Less Than 80 Active Aircraft: The Airbus A340 In 2022 

I’ve always found the middle main gear on the A340 an iconic part of the aircraft

I loved the A340-600 flying Virgin between London and New York plenty of times. The cabin seemed to go on forever. The ride was solid and you felt safe and happy.

I flew on a Swiss and a Philippine Airlines A340-300 and a Thai Airways A340-600 years ago. Those planes were definitely much much quieter to fly in, especially in the -600, so I experienced significantly less jet lag then. I think the A380 and the A350 are the only planes that can beat the A340 in cabin noise insulation.

I flew on one of the Edelweiss A340-300s in the very beginning of 2022. Such a good plane. Quiet, comfortable, smooth, although not a fast one to take off for sure.

Managed to catch a Lufthansa A340-300 on approach to DFW International in Texas one day recently when I was driving near the airport, super cool to see I can’t believe I caught it as just the right time.

Sadly, not yet. Lufthansa is flying a daily A343 service to my home in Singapore. Germany was one of the first countries we opened up to when it comes to tourism, back in September last year. I was indirectly persuading my parents to have our first post-COVID holiday to Europe at least, mainly to fly the “hairdryer”. Have to hope i get my chance soon. As of now, i’ll just chase A380s and 747s. Asiana is going to resume A380 flights to Bangkok and my family has flirted with the idea of a holiday to South Korea. If we can make a stop in Thailand work, I could return to flying in the very best way possible.

I've flown on two A340s in the past month, a Lufthansa -600 from BOS to MUC and a Edelweiss -300 from YVR to ZRH. Both times I was really impressed by the plane and thought it was a great ride. So sad to see these beautiful birds slowly disappearing from the skies.

I’ve never really enjoyed working on this machine, which had bad nicknames among my colleagues: The snail, the veal, the hairdresser’s plane (because it had for hair dryers under the wings)… Fact is that it has an impressive safety record, though.

I used to fly on Kuwait Airways's A340-300 all the time back then, when it was in service. I always flew on: KU541 (KWI-CAI) KU542 (CAI-KWI) KU545 (KWI-CAI) KU546 (CAI-KWI) Everytime I used to fly from Kuwait to Cairo on Kuwait Airways, I always get the A340-300. Flew on her quite a lot. Earlier this year Kuwait Airways suspended the KU541 (and subsequently KU542) service.

I flew a few times on Air Canada A340s (when they still used them) and also on Cathay Pacific’s primarily to places like Hong Kong from Toronto. I can honestly say they were always a real favourite aircraft type of mine. When you viewed the cabin interiors, the layout and size always seemed to be welcoming.

Took the A340-600 several times from my home town MUC to LAX. Restrooms in the belly down stairs- priceless. Kinda "stairway to heaven... ah restroom". Had once an aisle seat in the third last row, the last with a window. From there the tube seems not to end. The longest flying sausage with its hairdryers under the wings. Sure not a jet fighter and gaining altitude very slow, but a veeeery smooth ride, just like an A380. Changed my summer plans just to ride one again to LAX for a sadly last time. Unfortunately an underestimated plane.

I traveled several times between Seattle and Copenhagen when SAS flew the route with an A-340. The only other one I can remember was on Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong to Vancouver. All were -300s featuring the hairdryer engines.

back in 2007 i flew a virgin A340-600 from shanghai to london heathrow. sitting at the very back of this extra long aircraft was quite a view whilst taking off. enjoyable flight.

Flew on a Qatar 346 from Doha to Columbo Sri Lanka about 4 years ago. What a beast. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the 345 used to hold the record for the longest route in the world

I'm privileged to have flown both the South African Airways A340-300 and A340-600. It's been one of my favourite airplanes until the A350 and A380 took over in my heart.

As of October 2022. Lufthansa is using A 340-300 for SIN-FRA route. I flew from Changi yesterday and saw this type next to my gate.

In January 2019 I flew a Swiss Airbus A340 from Shanghai to Zurich. I felt we very quickly arrived in Zurich.

In 2018 I flew a Virgin Atlantic 747 JFK-MAN. When the return to the USA turned out to be on an Airbus, I figured it would be an A340. It was an A330 instead. I don’t expect to fly on a 747 again or on an A340 ever.

Maleth Aero operate 3 A340-600 preighters, mainly between Bournemouth and various Chinese cities. 2 are ex Virgin Atlantic jets (9H-EAL and 9H-PPE), and are still in Virgin liveries, just debadged. 9H-EAL was the jet that had the A Big Virgin Atlantic Thank You sticker. The third is ex Etihad and has been painted all white with a European cargo sticker. There are another 3 A340-600 which are owned by European Cargo and are all ex Virgin Atlantic jets.

Love the quad- and trijets! Having been born in the 80s, I enjoyed several Sydney-Zürich journeys via Asia. We were spoiled with all the 747 journeys. Having said that, I do agree that we go for the more efficient twinjets. As long as I can visit some old jets in a museum!

I flew on LH A345/6 a few times around 10-15 years ago. Lovely aircraft. Quadjets always make a flight more enjoyable (at least to me)

I have flown A 340 at Air France and Iberia. Very silent and comfortable plane

Flew on both A340-600 & A340-300 when Cathay Pacific had them from 2001-2005

Air Belgium also has 3 A340s,though they are expected to be retired in the new few years to come

I flew on a Cathay Pacific A340-200 back in 2002. The actual aircraft being B-HXM from AMS to HKG and back. It's a nice aircraft although the seat pitch in economy was not the best.

My second favourite modern aircraft after the iconic Boeing 747-400, I have flown many times on Cathay Pacific and that includes on A340 with them. I even have quite an expensive model of one that I bought in HKG. Shame to see them falling from favour but it’s the way all quad jets are going sadly.

I took an A340-300 on Lufthansa a few months ago, D-AIGU “Castrop Rauxel”, and I’ll be taking another one in a few days on Edelweiss. I think the best chance to fly on an A340 is with edelweiss air. Their entire long haul fleet is comprised of the A340-300, so if you fly edelweiss overseas you are pretty much guaranteed to end up on one, at least for now.

Wait a minute! What happened to the A340-600s Iberia and Virgin Atlantic had? Did the airline retire them? Also the Greek airline Olympic Airlines had the A340 300 until it closed in 2009

I flew on Lufthansa A340-600 from Munich to São Paulo a several years ago. I was flummoxed when the "window" seats in the last bulkhead row didn't have any windows. I felt like I was in a penal box. Several passengers didn't see the signage not to stand on the staircase down to the WC rooms, and the cabin crew kept telling them to vacate the staircases often. It got so annoyingly irritating to hear the command again and again.

A340 + A380, the true rare skybirds these days! Especially when the economics of the A220 are too tempting! Different beasts? Yes but the industry is rapidly evolving and it's the aircraft of tomorrow it would seem...

I have always loved the a340, I am hoping when I become a older (only 14) that I can start an airline with a340's keep them in my airline for as long as possible. Though they might disappear by the time I start my airline.

I've been on the exact same A340 in the video for South African Airways from Capetown to Johannesburg and the ride was very smooth. I would like to point out that the A340 is quite a weak aircraft when it comes to thrust because while taking off I saw the runway threshold at only 10 feet

Of all the modern quad jets it feels as if the A340 will have the most problems staying around. The A380 and the 747 still have some unique abilities but the A340 is basically already superceded.

Would love to see Airbus develop a new version of the a340-600 that is eco friendly and cheap with good long range

I have been on a two, China Airlines and Air France. both where great to fly with, with cameras in the outside as well which i didn't know at the time they had and PTV's in every seat back. not bad.. I hope these types will still be flying for a while. But i know for a fact that Lufthansa and swiss are retiring their A340s pretty soon..

I honestly think that despite the advancements in aviation technology. Quad jets should still be the standard for flights over the oceans 🌊. I like the security of quad engines

I have the privilege of flying with Edelweiss on their a340-300 from yyc to zur this summer

I flew a Lufthansa A340 to Munich in 1998 and an Iberia A340 to Madrid in 2004. Being an aviation geek, I was excited because it was a chance to check out a different aircraft. I felt that the 777 had more space, even in economy. The Lufthansa experience was ok, the Iberia experience was terrible. Lufthansa's aircraft still had a sleek and clean appearance both inside and out. Iberia's on the other hand looked old and tired. Definitely prefer the 777!

It was airbus's mistake not to drop it and proceed with a twin-engine long haul A330 instead when 777 went on well.

I went to China on a Swiss A340-300 years ago. Of all the aircraft retirements we've been seeing, the A340 is the one I'll personally miss the most, simply because I think it's a particularly graceful-looking airliner, at least in the 300 variant.

I flew on the Airbus A340-300 with Air France from Lagos to Paris CDG back in 2016. Those 4 engines where so loud when sitting at the back of the aircraft during departure but either way I enjoyed flying on it.

The thing that killed the A340: the Boeing 777-200ER and 777-300ER. In fact, once 787 deliveries restart again, the remaing A340-300's are heading for the scrapyard.
