Rachel Talbott I have been watching your channel for awhile now and am very happy to see a “less waste” focus becoming a part of your content. Thank you! I believe it’s so important to share content like this, and your videos can inspire others. I follow a variety of these practices as well, and I am always looking for new ideas. I am from Portland, Oregon and I have now been thinking of a possible future home that involves chickens. I eat mainly plant based, however my partner loves eggs. Your videos are increasingly motivating me to create more of a plan to adopt chickens later in life and to build a small paradise for them. Ha! Anyways, thanks for the great videos.

I absolutely love the steps you're taking in living a more natural, healthy and less wasteful way!! Until this video I had never heard of reusable paper towels. I rarely use paper towels and there's a partial roll on top of the refrigerator that's about 9 years old. I use glass canning jars and glass containers for all of my food storage and I also use stasher bags instead of plastic.
@davielawrence3773
@davielawrence3773 4 года назад
I also use just a microfiber cloth (which isn't great for the environment, I know, but I bought them years ago and made sure they don't lose microplastic). I wash them with my kitchen towels and will get rid of them in a few years before they fall apart, then chance to old thick cotton or sew myself some from an old towel 😊

I do get fascinated with such videos.. I've seen tons of these where they show how to waste less or be eco friendly or family producing less or 0 waste.. I'm an Indian I've grown in the shadows of my grandmother for quite sometime.. very early in age we were taught to leave the plate clean.. eat every single grain not to drop food on the table mat.. our old t-shirts were used as kitchen slab cleaners.. if we buy a container with a product the container was reused to keep the kitchen organised.. fix our old toys.. if a newly stitched dress was not fitting me anymore that dress would be given to a person who could wear it.. As time kept passing what my grandmother taught was considered as we are not well to do.. unwanted relatives oh you're still using the same container etc etc.. when i watch these videos it reminds me of my grandmothers teachings.. Till date I use my old t-shirts to clean the kitchen slab.. it's not I can't afford a sponge wipe it's just let's make the world a better place.. I'm not ashamed to use my old cloths or a free container I got with coffee or oats..

We recently started doing this with our produce. We put the produce scraps into paper bags then through everything, including the bag, into the compost. Easy clean up and get the right ratio of carbon to nitrogen. Just be sure to place the paper bag in something in case of any leaking/juices seeping out

I just love this...de started composting like a month ago, and I dont have a lot garbage to throw every day, it's just amazing. We luve in an apartment, so out compost needs to be in a clay pot and we dont have the worms. But man it.has.made such a difference. And any plastic that I get I try to save it on a plastic bottle to later donate as an eco - brick. Really organizing and traying not to produce so much garbage does a lot of good to the planet

That is true, your habits definitely change. We start zero waste a couple of years ago. The first thing we stop using was paper towels, instead we use wash clothes, in the beginning was weird but we set up our minds like in old days and before we knew it 2 years has pass. It feels good knowing that we are helping the environment and also we are saving. 🥰

You asked for suggestions about storing veg. Ive tried the beeswax papers and just cant get used to them. What I do for my carrots and celery is use old pickle/mason/glass jars and store stackable sizes immersed in filtered water in those. With those reusable paper towels (I use them too) I wrap any veg that needs to stay crisp then place in my crisper. Everything from from lettuce to greens. I also invested in specialed veg storage containers (i try to get glass when possible). I dont know of you've heard of the Blue Apples, but they go in your crisper and help to trap the ripening gases that produce emits therefore preserving produce longer! They are great!

For your garden harvests, try the Stasher silicone reusable bags. That's what I use to store my carrots, green beans, and other veggies in the fridge from the garden. I also use them to freeze leftovers, or to pack snacks on the go. While the silicone bags aren't biodegradable, they can be washed in the dishwasher and reused many, many times.

While I am all for the less waste thing, I don't see the practicality of reusable paper towels. I grew up with normal paper towels, and we use them for a million things. And, the soap bar thing wouldn't fly in my house. Also, the compost pail would just stay dirty b/c it is a scrap bucket - so just keep it out of sight in your kitchen, or even outside, and don't worry about cleaning it! AND, I'm allergic to Castille soap, so that's out for me. AND, I get everything I need from Honest and Grove Collaborative!

Hi there Rachel! I love this video! I have two tips for you; amazon sells reusable BPA-free baggies in various sizes to store things in your fridge or for lunches and such. They may be dishwasher safe but they may not, I’m not sure. Safe for your health and the planet! Also, and you can find these on amazon as well, if you don’t want to have to empty your compost everyday you can get a compost pail that has a charcoal filter and it won’t smell and won’t attract bugs! We’ve had one for years and can go a full week without having to empty our pail and without smelling it or seeing bugs around it. Hope this helps!

You can also switch off the top of your kitchen brush, so you don't have to buy a completely new one every few months and can just keep the handle 😊 Also: store your coffee in the fridge! The coffee will stay fresh way longer and won't use it's taste! Also, you can use some ground coffee as a smell neutraliser in the fridge. Just put some coffee (that you maybe don't like the taste of) in a small jar or bowl and keep it open in your fridge, it will absorb all the bad smells

I heard you don't need beeswax wrap you just need plain cloth to absorb the moistures and the veggies will stay dry and fresh. moisture will cause bacteria growth then food will rot quicker. So just make a simple cloth bag will do. You can use any pattern you like for your grocery fridge bag.
