I watched the first 5 minutes of this and learnt more essentials about watercolour than all the videos I've watched within the past 2 weeks!!!! Thanks man, I think with practice, this video alone can help me go from beginner to intermediate.
Wow, thanks to you Benzo, for thanking my parents for conceiving me, I'll let them know : ) So glad everyone is enjoying the videos. More lessons coming when I have time.
I have just started watercolor painting, have been watching numerous artists and their techniques, from loose, flowing pieces to detailed work, but yours is the first I found on values. This was enlightening and watching how you showed it doesn't matter what colors you use but the values, well it blew me away. Many many thanks
Excellent instruction. Painted with a 1" flat whereas I would have used rounds for many areas. You make it look easy. Of course you have a wealth of experience to know that by dipping your brush into that amount of pigment with that amount of water it will produce this value.... Still, holding the paper in your hand being cognizant of where the camera is, talking to us and painting quickly at the same time. Simply in awe.
Thank you, you might watch lesson 25, I do this subject again...using a number of brushes and my hands...to teach that it is not the equipment that makes our paintings work...
Soooo Amazinggg!!! Thank you.... i started using water colors around six months back n have been practicing almost everyday n loving it more n more...Some things i am happy i was intuitively doing right but your lessons are making me feel so rich....cant wait to paint through this perspective...
Sir can you please tell me what of plate, brush you are using. I'm an student artist. Also a ultraordinary fan and Student of you. Can you please please please give me answer. And I want to learn more from you. Can you teach me? Thank you sir. Your most obedient fan Indranil Kundu.
Happy that you enjoy my lessons. Any watercolor brush will work, round or flat...the brush isn't important, please watch lesson 25. The plate isn't important: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6n4hC36GMBE.html
this was the most amazing, simple, helpful and easy to understand watercolor lesson i have ever watched here in RU-vid so far. thank you very much for sharing your techniques and knowledge, sir.
Using a round brush instead of the flat brush would work just as well. Using a small brush and going very slow, would work great. If you work slow with a small brush your painting would simply be much more realistic.
Brilliant. I’ve been struggling with how to do these types of portrait and now I know it’s all about values, not colours! Can’t wait to try it out now!
Stan, thank you for being one of very few artists who keep stressing on getting the "value" right. I knew that "value" was important, but I didn't realize how important it was. You really drilled home how much "value" is so much more important than colour. It was magic to see how you can use any colour as long as the "value" is correct. I learned a lot from this lesson!
Stan, you are the great artist and your teaching skills are simply FANTASTIC!! Lots of art books and videos as well try to explain the value subject in more or less confusing way. Your 17 minuts of Lesson 16 is amazingly clear, concise and so understandable! Thank you soooo much :-)
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for these lessons. For 6 months I have been struggling with watercolors. I always thought I was good at portraiture but recently have been so disappointed and feel as though I"ve lost my talent. But your first video, on how much water should be in the brush, showed me the major mistake I've been making. Not one other video has mentioned this. And each subsequent lesson has taught me something I didn't understand. So Thank You from the bottom of my heart. You are the art teacher I have been waiting for.
Stan Miller do you ever come to tidewater virginia? I take painting classes with Betty Anglin through lifelong learners. I know we'd all enjoy a workshop if you are ever out this way.
and on a painting note, I'm totally hooked on your way of approach to painting. thank you so much for the videos. These again are seriously under-watched and commented. However, when I saw this video.. I almost spit my drink out due to surprise at who you are using as the subject. Who is the subject you are using? I might live in the dark ages.. almost positive I do. LOL But I Started drawing a man that caught my eye one day browsing the internet . thankfully I saved his picture... because I have not been able to find it since. I don't think it's the same person but he looks so much like the one i drew. I stopped mid way through the drawing swearing never to finish it till I found out who it was. I call him "Mr. Soul Eyes" I would put a link to an image but I don't want to seem like I'm soliciting. HIs expression is so different in this picture you are doing but almost positive it's the same person. The expression he has in the picture I found was just soul grabbing. It caught my eye out of hundreds of thumbnails and immediately cried when I saw it and I Didn't even know him!! I've treasured it since.. that whole experience. So, when I saw this subject for your painting I just had to ask. It's okay if you think i'm crazy I know I'm odd... I'm okay with it.
thanks a lot, Stan, for your video instructions on watercolor. i finally found my "aha!" moment because of you...... am almost about to give up trying but luckily found your videos..... this is amazing and awesome.... thank you, thank you!
Thank you for this lesson sir! I'm trying color for my first time and was intimidated with it at first. As long as the value is the same, the color one uses doesn't matter. Outstanding work sir.
a-hahaha now I understood. i never learned painting, but painting once a while ㅡ no, not painting, copying most likely. some asked me how I did, but i don't know how I did ㅡ l just did. now, I see that it was the 'value' that's what I was doing it. i don't do 1/3, 2/3 stuff for the face. I just start any spot eyes or lips. I like to try out the feelings, like worrying, playful or curious, etc Now, I learn that the ' Value of the color ' you can switch to warm or cold color. I will try that. I leave here a note for you. "THANK YOU SO MUCH~! ㅡ from a 70 yrs old Korean lady" hahaha
I feel like everyone in the comment section just had a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. Now they can enjoy painting again. Thank you for the invaluable lesson.
Hi Stan, FYI This video has been linked to in the latest edition of the free online PMP Art magazine. issuu.com/paintmyphoto/docs/newsletter_summer_2014
To the post that suggested Mr. Miller was talking to much. This is where the bulk of the information lies. If he just demonstrated with no sound, are just some music playing you wouldn't have learned a thing. Repartition is your best friend in learning to do something right. Hearing what Mr. Miller is trying to teach us said over and over again and getting it cemented in our brains so we will not forget it. Now we just need to practice these lesson over and over until they become second nature to us.
Great tutorials! It's possible for an art teacher to be a good teacher without being a good artist, and it's possible for a good artist to be a terrible teacher. Your tutorials are excellent because you are both a great artist and great teacher. Thanks for the videos.
Hi Stan, excellent videos! if you could put another elaborate demo on tonal values as it is most difficult to understand.. thanks and appreciations! :)
I just would like to thank you for being an awesome teacher! I will be taking out the watercolors I put away because I was so frustrated I just didn't get it! thanks so much for explaining it so well.
Very awesome !! I was looking for this kind of color value tutorial for a long time !... How do you recommand to train color value ? I have a good knowledge in grey scale value I think, but with color it seems way harder !... Thanks a lot !
I need to do a lesson on seeing the grey scale value of any color. The easiest method for me is squinting. Also, getting back from your color, or looking at your color in a dark room or a dim light. Or, take a photo of your color with your cell phone, convert the photo to a grey scale, (easy to do on an iphone) and then check to see if your color is the right value. (there are a few value viewer apps out there for artists, to help them see the value of their colors). Once you learn how to see the value of a color, it's relatively easy to make sure your color is the right value. A lesson on this will be coming up in the future...
Thank u! This tutorial was exactly what this returning artist needed! Omgggg! I forgot to see this way and you perfectly explained it! Now I am only seeing in values and tones!!!! Thank u!!!!!!
Very very nice you gave layered dimension to black skin instead of trying to match skin tone values like "makeup foundation" !!!! I Teach a marker rendering fashion illustration class and try to apply similar techniques with that genre. Thank you for the demo.....
You are awesome awesome awesome ... ♥♥♥ we want more more more tutorials.... more portraits and landscapes and all kind of watercolors... please keep the good work up... keep uploading. Love and respect ♥♥♥
Thank you! I've been wanting to paint in this style and was not successful. I just drew and painted Billie Holiday and though it is not a patch on your work, I'm quite happy with it. I really appreciate your teaching style and will be looking at all your work.
It was the blue next to the nose that attracted me to this. Now try to do the perfect beauty Gabor with the same one inch flat brush . George Wu, AIA, ARCHITECT, NCARB Every line in Garbo's face dictates whether she is beautiful or not. That is why people preferred to use old people as the subject matter.
Mr. Miller, You open a window for me. From school, we were taught to pay attention to cold and warm colors, but this is not your case, which works in a dramatic way. Thanks again, I should have looked your video much earlier. An architect
Also your style is impressionistic...but I think after I'm done painting all the values, after I would have tighten the illustration using cross hatching with color pencil
Hello Stan, firstly, what type of brush are you using? Secondly, with watercolours, the difference between tone is up to how much water you use, is it not? cheers, love your work. regards, Tiffany
Ha! You make it look so easy. I did this twice today and the second attempt did look better for sure. The biggest issue I had was control of the color. The first time my values were all dark, second time was better as I learned to pick the right color and consistency. The splash, sponge, color that you do so effortlessly and fast.. I am so clumsy and I think I felt I had to do it as fast as you. Anyway I’ll practice more. Thanks
Stan.... now i know what the value mean about. No wonder I suffer more on my painting and sometimes get in confuse with my pallet. I have to rework again but I don't know what were wrong on my canvas. Your explanation make it clear to me what was wrong.
