Lesson on Kindness: Teaching kids about why their words have power 🗣️🍎

"I came across this amazing video from this phenomenal teacher, Ms. Natalie Ringold, and wow, we all could learn a thing or two from this lesson! No matter our age, our words matter. What we say matters. How we say things matter. The younger we are when we understand this the better, but hopefully it’s not too late for some people to learn! I love this idea that if someone can’t change something about themselves in 30 seconds or less, then you shouldn’t be mentioning it to them. This doesn’t just apply to when we say something to someone in person, but how we behave online. Let us all remember we are responsible for our words, and once they are out of our mouths or typed, it’s hard to take them back." -- Maria Shriver

@SpMile your words: "it's also kindness to help people be better" Yes, my friend, you are absolutely correct about THAT key point. But you're misunderstanding that she is teaching to an audience who was making unhelpful, unkind comments. If you listen more closely, you will see she gives examples of types of comments. Commenting on someone's hair is not kind or helpful because they can't change it. She's specifically addressing unkind comments. Meanwhile your subject is equally as valid, but completely separate, because your point is that kindness is helpful. If a comment is said with love, gently and respectfully and in the right time and context. Here's an example of that: (setting the person to the side, in private where they don't feel embarrassed, taking them for a walk with you so that they don't feel stared at, and letting them know you want to speak about their weight, because you care, and want to help, but that you don't want to push them or pressure them, and that you will wait for them to be ready to open up about this. The beautiful walk, fresh air and silence, and safe person to share with, might get them to open up, it will surprise :)).

Another child noticed and instead of making fun of me or letting everyone else notice, she grabbed me by the hand and pulled me away in private to tell me what had happened and helped me put the buttons back in the right place ❤ This 8 year old knew she could choose to change my day in 30 seconds for good or use words she couldn't take back to make it worse... This was very wise of the teacher!!! When i was in about 5th or 6th grade, my teacher told us all on the last day of school all of this: She asked a kid to scrumple us a piece of paper and try to ruin it in anyway except ripping it. Then she asked another kid to try and straighten it out and uncrumple it. The 2nd kid tried, but the paper was still a little crumpled. The the teacher told us that when you hurt something, in this case the paper, no matter what you do to take it back and fix it, it will always stay there. My favourite quote is 'Bullying is like throwing a stone in the sea. You never know how deep it goes.' If someone says something negative about you, ignore it. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AND LOVED. Even if you dont feel like its true, there is someone out there who loves you for who you are and will never stop loving you. Thank you for reading this far!

Listen. I just wanna thank this teacher for taking the time to do this. A lot of teachers don't see this as part of their job, and to be perfectly honest. It isn't. But if the parents aren't doing it and there is a chance you can't get through to a kid why not try... Y'know? That's my mentality anyway. I would have loved to be a teacher. Just my High school let me down when it came to getting help for my exams (too long a story). I would have taken the time to do this. It's something I instill in my son. That our words have power and we need to spread kindness. Sadly, it doesn't seem like anyone else is doing this so my son now is having a hard time with others words towards him. Learning to understand when someone's picking on him or not is something he struggles with because of his autism. But I think me drilling into him how important it is to be kind has back fired into him not standing his ground. He's started boxing now.

It's why I never lash out verbally unless I really need to get it off my chest to let the person know that they're being hypocritical but I need the courage that I get when I'm angry (the only time I did this was when my dad pissed me off with what he said and another time where a toxic "friend" wanted me to pamper him when he knew that I was uncomfortable with doing that for multiple reasons) And I never intentionally cross boundaries even if I'm angry. I don't bring up things they mentioned that had nothing to do with the argument and I don't give anything I'm not able to receive if they do the same thing to me. Despite my anger issues, I do have some level of control which is why I don't have much respect for people who make excuses to get into fights that are my age or older 😅

This is a good rule to follow for small kids. Once you’re an adult I feel like being able to have/handle critiques that are more harsh are important. For years all my “friends” told me I looked great even though I was gaining 5-10 pounds a month I got HUGE. It wasn’t until one friend came up to me and was like “you’re fat compared to how you used to look” opened my eyes to toxic niceness

I taught this to my toddler 25 years ago. She took it to heart. If she wants to say bad thing or criticize people I told her to vent those things on me, not to them. They stay a secret with me and she gets the frustration off her mind😅

I had the toothpaste lesson in elementary public school in the 1990s, as well. I think it may have been health class? Don't fully remember, but this demonstration is well over 30 years old and I'm surprised that more people don't already know of it.❤❤

ALL TEACHERS should be teaching this stuff to kids ... not just parents ... it takes a village ... as they say ... kids don't always learn instantly ... they need ongoing lessons in good behaviour ... The world world would be a better place ... for all of us is we ALL took responsibility for the each generation to do well and be kind ... and have basic interpersonal skills ...

I absolutely adore this video being "teaching kids at an early age to avoid being rude and generally unlikable people" and there are people in the comments genuinely being like "um... Could you not do that?" What I'm the name of all that is good is wrong with you people. 😂

This isn't new... These teachings have been used to keep girls submissive for centuries. Silencing people because their words hurt your feelings is disgusting! Telling little girls to "shut up or be nice" is even worse! Rephrasing it, doesn't change the fact that this woman is teaching the next gen of girls to stay submissive, because what people think about you is more important than your well being.

@@mmosley1978 this advice is geared towards elementary kids who have zero filters. It's teaching them to think before they say anything. Kids will say the most out of pocket things to adults and peers without even thinking it could be an insult. THATS what she's trying to nip in the bud. Learning how to properly critique and receive criticism is a whole different lesson they'll learn when they get older. You gotta crawl before you can sprint.

Absolutely right, words do have power but we should also learn resilience so that we also have power against words that only have the potential to harm. Power works both ways. A kid says to my 5 year old niece, ewwww you have hairy arms. Her reply - yeah, so?! But kindness should always come first

🌷You’re terrific! My aunt was a kindergarten teacher… a little boy, was doing things to bother and hurt a little girl. She asked him to come to the front of the class. On the way up, she said ‘be sure to bring your hands with you’. He looked at her in a confused way. She then proceeded to tell him that his hands were getting him into trouble… you tell your hands that when they misbehave, or if they want to misbehave, to just stop it! Tell them you are in control and that you want them to behave… to only be nice. (etc) She did not shame him; she just told him that his hands needed to be more careful. 😊 (in politics… we need to do that with our mouths! :-)
