In three years, I went from having absolutely no experience in 3D Animation to working at DreamWorks Animation Studios teaching just about all of the 3D software used to make movies! After 2 years there, I left to try freelance / independent content creation on RU-vid for awhile, before I head back to Feature Film!
This is my journey- the entire process from when I decided I wanted to be an animator until I eventually get there, and everything along the way that will make it possible.
Whether you're chasing a similar dream, or just interested to see where mine takes me, subscribe to follow along with the incredible journey that it takes to become an animator!
You will not be disappointed.

Thank you Shawn, for sharing :) What answer / piece of advice was the most helpful for YOU to hear??

I enjoyed the section where he talks about what Shawn feels about his great moments and how it helped with confidence and trust in himself more. And seeking out quality feedback, that's never easy, but it is worth it.

@@aseigan7438 I believe that once you get the hang of getting constant feedback, you start getting out of your comfort zone. As long as you trust yourself and your abilities, you will succeed. Failure doesn't define who you are, it's what you do after you fail that determines if you'll succeed. Trust yourself. I know my work isn't top tier stuff, yet I use other peoples work as self-motivation. Can anyone get to their level, YES! All it takes is motivation, tenacity and responsibility. Good luck!

All the questions ! 1:04 : As a lead do you get first dibs on messing around with the rigs ? 2:18 : When you are animating a hand and a sword, can you ever do that in FK ? 2:58 : How do you define the degree of violence you can have in a shot ? 4:20 : Do certain animators tell you they don't like to work on violent stuff ? 4:30 : Do you ever have an animator that just can't get a shot right ? 8:34 : How to you mangage the work/life balance ? And how to survive crunch time ? 12:09 : What is THE thing on a demo reel that make you decide to give that one person a chance ? 13:04 : Rango was great, why did you not do another full animated feature film at ILM ? 14:01 : Do you want to see the reference and then the shot on a demo reel ? 14:49 : What was the biggest growth moments in your animation career ? 17:43 : What are the things to do when you are a newbie into the industry in order to grow as an animator ? 18:22 : What were the struggles you had when you got hired at ILM ? 20:19 : How do you avoid becoming blind to your shot, and how do you keep your motivation up ? 23:22 : Do you ask for advices sometimes ? 23:46 : Do you have many applicants who come from the gaming industry ? Is this an issue ? 25:30 : What are your favourites plugins and hot keys in Maya ?

This is so cool I love Shawn Kelly he's awesome always cheerful. This was very informative and there were a lot of things I relate to so I'm glad I'm not the only one going through what he went through in terms of impostor syndrome and showing your reel etc. I loved this Q&A and can't wait to hear more about what you learned.

This is the same guy that worked on the part where Optimus fights Bonecrusher from the first transformers movie. Those few shots solidified my love for VFX and animation. Much respect. Awesome interview btw too.

I really thought I was the only one who's had some shots handed over to other animators when I just can't get it right. This made me feel so much better. Thanks for uploading the good talk!

Thank you for capturing that amazing interview. Shawn Kelly is talking about all the Up's and Downs as an Animator and it feels facilitating to hear that even big animators have the same problems motivation wise as the newcomers. It really lifts my mood. ♥

Super helpful; especially the part where he talked about feeling like everyone else is so much better and feeling like a fraud. I do too much comparing between myself and others when I see their work. It turns into a negative instead of something I could learn from to make my work better.
@dannymorales787
@dannymorales787 5 лет назад
I would suggest being positive to yourself. Turn all these negative thoughts into positive thinking! Ask yourself, what can you do better for your next project, just a heads up, these pro animators didn't learn everything in a day, month or year. It takes YEARS to learn everything they know. Use what the pros know to your advantage by studying what they did in order to get certain poses right. It takes time and dedication. Use feedback as a motivation to learn and get better. You got this! Good luck!

Very insightful and helpful video. The bit about when you get your shot given to another animator rings true for me. If it can happen to Shawn then I feel abit better...in a nice way. :-)
