I quit being a biglaw lawyer at top firm Wilson Sonsini two years ago to focus mental health & explore other things in life. Two years later, here are some of the major life lessons I learned about the process, and how you can take action to find purpose in your day to day.
TOC:
1:09: Do I regret quitting?
2:25: Did I have a plan when I quit?
4:50: Life is a grand adventure
5:39: Complacency is not happiness.
7:01: The importance of having fun
7:58: Fail fast
9:22: Focus on impact

Thanks for this man, really appreciate your work! Having the courage to go against the grain in the high-flying world of professional services is so damn hard. At some point, we all became shackled by the concept of "prestige" and the immense sunk costs of our efforts. Cheers for showing us that it's always possible to let it go and pivot to pursue what matters to you.

Thank you - I appreciate this and agree w/ you. The world of professional services becomes a bubble too - you can easily fall victim to thinking that staying is your only option or that there's no world outside of it. Appreciate your thoughtful comment.

Yeah, working for yourself is so much better!!! You have way more peace which is way more valuable than having more money. It's also about knowing what kind of person you are. If you're introverted and prefer not to work with others... Working alone is the only way to really show the world what you can do! Way to tell everyone Mr. S!!!😊

Really good video . Making an impact is really important. I been homeless for over 10 years . Applied to grad school twice and got rejected. Applied Starbuck job got rejected multiple times. Started RU-vid channel and only got 2 views , and losing subscribers . Now I failed so many times . I'm so afraid to take actions on anything in life because I am afraid to fail again. This video hopefully will help me get motivate again to not afraid of failure and take action ❤

You can do it! You have overcome so much already - the fact that you can spread positivity like you did in this comment is honorable in and of itself.

I know big law won’t fulfill me, but (as of now) I plan to work a few years in big law after a judicial clerkship so I can pay down loans and save/invest for when my daughter goes to college cause she’ll be 12 when I graduate. Sending her to college is really my priority at this point. Thank you for all the insight you give and sharing your experiences.

Hi from Germany 🤘 I see a person who is not afraid listening to his gut, failing and taking full responsibility for owning a happy life. Special Congrats - for me this is positively extraordinary to me 😍🙏

I just discover your channel. I was working in a magic circle law firm and this was my whole life before being hospitalised. I then decided to quit and focus on my mental health. I now work in art, which was my hobby. Of course it wasn't easy to completely change careers, my friends and family were very shocked at first and I earn less than as a lawyer but I never regretted my decision and I finally feel happy

I am a lawyer myself I did a lot of studying over the years but I feel like I've wasted my time. I couldn't find my path in the legal field, constantly dreaming about something creative and uplifting (I have a florist degree also, did some weddings and stuff), but it is hard for me to let go this and not feel like a failure. Because I have no interest in my carrier I make mistakes and it has a huge impact on my self confidence in a bad way. I would change carriers but I do not have the courage and I am afraid 😏

You can always go back to being a lawyer! That's part of what helped me make the leap. Knowing I could go back to practicing law

First time seeing your content. Went back & watched your original video on this topic. And it’s like we went thru the exact same thing in terms of challenges with mental health given the job, the pandemic, and for me, the racial & political unrest in the U.S. I was very successful & late in my career, so I originally planned to only take a 3 month sabbatical. As I started planning though, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to go back to the same situation. So I just quit altogether. My company would be happy to have me back -it hasn’t been a full 6 months yet, and they’ve already called me twice to check. But that just reinforces my decision because it’s just a sign of how hard I worked (I.e., how much of myself I gave up in my often 60+ hours of work). So for now, at 51, I’m considering myself retired, and moved out of the U.S. I’ve taken up painting & have sold a few pieces, but it’s a hobby that I’m doing for myself. At this point, can’t imagine ever going back to my old corporate life & I’m fine with that. Life is short & tomorrow is never promised. Thanks for sharing your story.

Did you think that the big law environment exacerbated your mental health issues or did they develop during your time there?
