How I knew it was time to quit my job to focus mental health.

If you told me I would have quit the career I chased my whole life to focus on mental health, I would've laughed at your face. I'm literally the most risk averse person I know!
In this video I unpack my own journey and coming to terms with quitting my job - why I made the decision, how I made the decision, and what things folks should think about if they are pondering making the same leap. Remember that no matter where you are in your journey, you always have a choice, even if the space to make the choice is minimal!

Same. Now ten years after taking on the long journey of becoming a lawyer and finally made it. I started losing hope in life and just had now desire to go on. So I finally as of two days ago said “this is it”, I am quitting law to pursue what gives ME purpose in life and not my parents.

I’ve come to accept that I cannot work somewhere long term. Like those people who are like “I’ve been working here for 23 years” … That will never be me. I have chronic depression and a job easily triggers my mental health issues to get worse. A bad job means I will go from having no anxiety symptoms to having severe anxiety that lingers even after I had quit and got therapy. Update: I did k3tamin3 assisted talk therapy for the anxiety. Also IV k3t for depression. It worked. Now I work remote in IT. I get paid more and less stress. Thank god!
@julianinlaw

I'm so happy that you're aware and acceptant of that! Honestly I feel like the "work somewhere forever" model is on its way out. Our generation has so many other interests and opportunities compared to past ones, that it's only natural we spend less time in one spot. I'm glad you are prioritizing your mental too. So important.

@UdoADHD Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this post. As excruciatingly painful as the pandemic was (and still is), it forced me to reflect. I realize that all the jobs that I had were worsening/triggering my anxiety. However, I was too afraid to acknowledge it before because being employed, even if the job is toxic, is what everyone else expected of me. However, none of these same people were asking about my mental health. When I did mention that my job was affecting me negatively, I was told "just look for another job but don't leave your job before you've found another one". However, I was so drained after work and on weekends, this was nearly impossible. 2020 was the first time I had the courage to prioritize my mental health and surround myself with more pveople that understand that. Thanks again for posting.

I put in my notice last week. It was one of the scariest things I’ve done as my work ethic has always been strong since I was a teen. It’s been affecting my mental health for a while and I tried to power through and hoped things would get better as I looked for work but then it escalated to physical issues. So I resigned. Everything you felt in this video was what I was going through. Funny thing is within 24 hours of my notice they found 3 people to divide my workload between. I had been telling them it was too much for months and was ignored. My takeaway is “Choose you.” These jobs really dgaf and will use you up as long as you let them.

Needed to read this. Very similar to my experience had said multiple times it was too much and whenever I was away it took two people to do my role. it took me resigning for them to finally listen. contemplated staying despite everything and somehow despite giving my blood sweat and tears to this role for 3 years… it’s still not good enough. finally quit and now have anxiety and feel sick thinking about the path ahead

I now don't find anything happy other than seeing my kids happy. I knew from a decade ago, my job will destroy me. I don't think I can quit until my kids are older. It took more than 10 hours of my time per day. 8 hours working + 1 hour lunch (but you are at the building) + 1 hour round trip commuting at least + getting ready and all that. Oh boy for how much? $60k and no benefit? they put my on salary but I was expected to work 40 hours a week. They would not allow me to even work 1 freaking day from home. 60% of the time at work I had nothing to do and drove me crazy. Today I after I quite I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulder. People please you are #1 and will always be #1. The CEO and people at your job don't give a *** about you. At the end of the day you are just a number on their balance sheet. Please if your job is toxic and draining you please quite and get a job that you can find comfort. Julian, I tried to push through my first episode of depression, burnout, and thoughts of self harm for about 5 months. I did it for monetary reasons and because I wanted to help my company. I just now realized that my company doesn’t care about my mental health. I applied, and was approved, for medical leave by the state of Washington. I am now on leave since last week and receiving 90% of my salary. I appreciate you pointing out the importance of mental health. I wouldn’t have considered that an option. I’m feeling hopeful now that I’m in a position to focus on my mental health. Doctor, Psychiatrist, and counseling are helping. And I’m grateful that I do not have to worry about money at the same time. I hope others have the same opportunity. Thanks Julian!

My one recommendation is that when you do quit, don’t give your boss a two week notice. They won’t give you a two weeks notice when they fire you or lay you off, so don’t extend that courtesy to them. Just up and leave, cuz when they fire you or lay you off you have to leave immediately or be escort out by security or the cops

When I gave my two weeks notice at the last two jobs I had they responded by just removing me from the schedule. They took all of my remaining hours away from me for the last two weeks I had remaining. A true sign of poor and weak management when they do this. They did not even ask me the reason why I was leaving. I totally agree with you when you say not to give them notice, and just leave.

I left my 10 year career earlier this month. It was 3 years prior that i made the decision because i was already mentally unhealthy. It was a high stress job and I knew I would eventually leave no matter how many therapists I saw or how many different ways they approached resolving or relieving my mental health and stress. When I finally left, I felt this burden off my shoulders, it was 10 years of my life being stressed. No matter how many resources my employer offered, was it worth staying for stress year around? Nope, I was out. Now I'm looking into a career change while relaxing at the same time too. Make major shift and changes in your life, stress is not worth it.

I've been in multiple toxic work place situations in my career which has been soul sucking experiences, this is what I felt through my experience: 1. Inexperienced leadership ruins everything, company which gives leadership roles by only seeing Tier 1 college names. 2. Micromanagement is the ultimate reason to be called as toxic work place. 3. Never work in any place just for money, they don't own you. They pay you for your time, that doesn't mean you should be working 24*7. 4. Your physical and mental wellbeing should be the top priority, protect them at all cost. The moment you feel it's taking a hit, you should realize work place is toxic. 5. Work in a place which let's your creativity thrive, not the one which diminishes it.

I finally got a good paying job for the first time in my life at age 39. Within that year my parents had passed (my dad of a heart attack, my mom slowly died of ovarian cancer) and my girlfriend got thyroid cancer at the same time my mom found out about her's. After I lost my mom I became insanely depressed and once my girlfriend completed her radiation therapy she kicked me out. I became super depressed, started over eating, quit associating with people, and just didn't care at all about making money. I eventually quit my job to focus on myself and started to get better, however, since I quit that job in the same year it's been a HUGE mark on my resume and I can't seem to get any job offers higher than 16 an hour. They won't take me back and nobody will hire me and I feel myself slipping right back into depression and it's a huge fight.

But I am completely stuck because I don't have a savings to fall back on and I live paycheck to paycheck. Trying to ramp up my writing career again so that I can do it full-time again. Anywho, thanks for this video. You have great advice.

Thank you for your video! No one ever points out mental health. I have worked at my job for six years, straight through the pandemic until now. With only two vacation times out of those years it's still a headache to get time off approved. Even with my problems with my child and my brother passing away. My Boss still expected me to come into work. I was furious. Now it's been five months later, I am exhausted, overworked, and stressed out more and more often. I have finally decided to change my career path all together, less pay but a much more healthier mentality and somewhere people actually appreciate the work I do. Thanks again! I hit that SUBSCRIBE FOR YOU ❤️

Unfortunately I am in a position where I can’t quit. I have so many responsibilities and a family to provide for now. But recently I’ve been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. I am on medication and the source or the stress I believe 100% comes from my job. It’s good paying. Hours and benefits are really good but it has sucked the life out of me. I just don’t knows what to do

HI Julian, thanks for your video, I was in a pediatrics residency during the COVID pandemic (2019-2022) and I reached a point of burn out in the end where my body instinctively was repulsive and would move away every time it saw a computer. It was just alot of burn out and loneliness, isolation, I didn't finish and got really sick actually and had to quit. I am so happy now that I have my peace and happiness and I am with my family and healthy now.

I've been on the fence of quitting my job for months now & this really hit the nail for me. Especially on the part where you said that you have tried doing things for your mental health (see therapist, setting boundaries) - after all these things, it really came to the conclusion that it really was the job all along that was causing the mental health problems. Thank you for laying out your thought process. It really has helped me!

Thank you for sharing! I'm in the process of leaving my current job for another. I realized early in my current role that my mental health started suffering, started suffering from burnout. I have lost the enthusiasm of looking forward to the next opportunity. I thought of taking leave of absence or taking a career break altogether to get my head straight. One downside to this is I am a foreign national on a work visa and if I were to quit my job, I would have to leave the country or things with immigration would get really messy. Hopefully, changing my job, industry, and environment will help turn things around for me. One day at a time.

Thank you very much for this video. I have been been stuck in my Job for 8 years and it has truly become unbearable for me to go through another day. I check all the boxes that you mentioned in your video basically. I even stay up late every night because I don't want to sleep and start the new Business day. Sunday afternoons are the worst where all the worries about work start seeping into my head. I have become "Mentally Allergic" to the notification sounds of Skype, Teams, Zoom, etc; I hate that amber hue behind the Outlook Icon ushering in a new Email or a meeting reminder... Maybe it is time for me to take that leap of faith, luckily I have been working on a plan B for some time now. Thanks again wish you all the best.

Great video and I wholeheartedly relate to this. For years I have been blaming myself for how I feel, which is complete dissatisfaction with life and a lack of purpose and direction. I focused on exercise, cut down on drinking and stopped taking recreational drugs, lost about 4 stone (60 pounds), starting being more financially savvy making investments and saving money, and yet I still ended up suicidal and tried to take my own life. The only constant throughout this period of my life was (and is) the job that I hate with every fibre of my being, and only now have I realised I need to get out like my life depends on it because it does. No job is worth your life, and although I am relatively trapped by a wage bracket I need to earn in order to pay rent and bills, I am proactively looking for the right opportunity and applying for jobs so I can plan my escape in a constructive manner. Since I made that decision and committed to it, I feel like I have hope and I feel like I know what I need to do. I don't know where I'll be in 5 years, but I can damn well tell you where I won't be and that's a good enough start for now. Best of luck to anyone else going through similar struggles

I am also working on my physical and mental health by making protein fruit smoothies and oatmeal several mornings a week, using the Calm app for meditations, and looking for new opportunities that are a better match for me at this time. I remember first coming across your mental health content on TT and am delighted you have a yt channel that extends into these topics further… A lot of the points you made in this video really resonated with me; I left my job earlier this year when I hit a rock bottom on my life and realized that I couldn’t continue on in my job anymore in order to literally preserve my own life. I never thought I would have the courage either but I did, you did and now both of us (plus a whole slew of people out there) have left unfulfilling roles in lieu of something new and I hope it’s been a good experience for everyone involved. It doesn’t come without my own personal challenges but I’m glad I took the plunge to try something new. Thanks for the videos! Hope you’re going well!

I know we are in separate fields, but after dedicating several years to the field of Cybersecurity engineering, I have recently taken the decision to step away from my role. Yesterday marked my last day in this capacity. The relentless demands of my job, the daily commute spanning an hour each way, and the regular disruptions to my sleep due to on-call responsibilities had taken a toll on my well-being. Consequently, I found it imperative to prioritize my mental and physical health. Thanks for sharing this video. I don't feel like quitting was a mistake anymore.

I stayed in a hateful job way too long. So burnted out that it takes years to recover. I don't encourage walking away because some of your colleagues are rude, that's stupid. But if you are constantly under pressure, working long hours, not eating and sleeping as you should, then it is perhaps time to go away for a year and come back refreshed. Take care of yourselves and each other. Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧

I quit my banking job today. It took nearly 1 year to come to this conclusion. I tried therapy, I tried managing my schedule, but the workload did not stop. The work pressure combined with tight deadlines meant I had to stretch and working in the weekends, working till late night was so common in my team that everyone used to put their status as away and work. The first symptom was getting frequent migraines due to stress, then sleepless nights, then anxiety over work. I was diagnosed with moderate depression and was taking pills combined with regular therapy sessions but nothing seemed to work. That is until I accepted the fact that my toxic work environment and job was the root cause of all this. It took me 1 year to accept the fact. I was lucky that I had a decent amount of savings and minimum expenses. The moment I put down my papers, I felt relieved.

Phew, RU-vid served this to me at the right time. I have been talking about my burnout on my podcast; it’s a good outlet for me and I hope to help others feel less alone. I am currently dealing with chronic burnout and it’s making me physically ill. I agree with it not being one single moment. It’s been years and years of being treated like garbage at work and it’s all coming to a head now after almost a decade. I am working super hard to become a full-time artist and content creator and I know I can get there, but I’m so scared that I’m not gonna make it and have to work a miserable job the rest of my life. I can relate to your situation so well right now. I know I should be incredibly grateful for the job I have but I have begun to realise that my mood on the days I have to work is far more irritable and depressed than on the days when I have some time off. I am prone to depression and besides irritability and sadness, the next step of depression - for me - is to start fantasizing about d*eath. As a ticket out of all my misery. I am not there yet but I do see my brain trying to take me along on that path. I am mindful enough (now) to stop it from taking me there but soon I won't be. I hope I quit before I become weak.

It is great to see your video opening up your mind, whch really reminds me of my law school years...always getting C, D...not getting internship...peer pressure...but I somehow managed to become qualified although on a low end salary (for low grade student). I enjoyed my legal practice much more than law school, and fast forward 10 years + I now set up my own law firm. I think your Harvard education spoke enough of your intelligence, hence maybe one day after a while, you can try different practice (if big corporate clients not suitable then try some individual client practice like personal injury litigation)...maybe one thing will suddenly lit up your mind and you found back the passion. Looking back and only speak for myself, I am glad I somehow passed through law school although I did indeed apply to transfer to other faculty quite a few times...for someone, jump gun does not mean relief but makes it even harder for you to look back and swallow the failure...so if you somehow can find an area of practice that can spark your mind, that would be a wonderful way to conclude your career and finally conquer the mental health issue. All the best.

I suffer with social anxiety. I've walked out on jobs because I felt so anxious. My longest job has probably been a weekend cleaning job which I did for 10 years. Even though it was only 8 hours a week I found it more stressful than a full time job so I quit a couple of years ago. It's great to have free time. I work mainly in office jobs but some roles can be demanding. For example I get really anxious if I run into work issues. This means I find it hard to ask for help and just feeling anxious around people.

I just made a similar decision to quit, go back to school for a masters, and make a large career transition. I allowed pressure from others put me on course for my current career when I was 15 years old. Now 15 years later despite being very successful and having very clear paths towards continued career progression, what I was doing was getting too far away from my core skillset. I was a software engineer who was invented into a business management employee based on what my company needed me to be. Like you said in the video, I started to realize the source of my dread and anxiety was knowing that the future I wanted wasn't aligned with the path my career had me on. Submitting my resignation was one of the most freeing things I've ever done in my life, and my mental health and happiness levels are worlds different since. I'm still not where I want to be yet, but I have a newfound level of self assurance I haven't felt in years.

I'm currently having this dilemma and still cant make a decision yet.. I know that the job that I'm in right now is totally not for me. I hate it, so much that I can even feel it every morning when I wake up on working days. It has given me frequent anxiety attack, and I've never had anxiety attack ever in my life, and it's horrible. The fact that my husband makes enough money for us to live (no kids, no pets) and we also have savings (thanks to our frugality) still doesnt help. Coming from a not-so-privileged family with money- related trauma, I cant stop myself from worrying about not having enough money. On top of that, I'm diagnosed with ADHD very recently and now struggling with processing everything, my identity, how suddenly I can connect all the dots of why I keep changing jobs and roles (dont get me wrong, I did very well in each of those jobs, but recruiters dont always understand that when they see it on paper..) What you shared here is like a slap to my head, yet im still having fear and doubts and dont know how to deal with it 😢
