You forgot one lesson: Don't just start buying every orchid you see, start with a few and make sure you can keep them alive and growing. Then you get a couple more, then a couple more. (then one day you realize you have 200 and it is time to throw some away. 😉)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I’ve been an avid orchid grower for 20 years and finally I’m getting into water culture, your advise and experience is well appreciated and very timely 😊.
I found this a very interesting video Danielle and really enjoyed the content of your thoughts on water culture. I've never tried this type of culture.....I don't think I have the kind of plants which will adapt to it. Thank you for the show, Ed,
Ed, thank you so much for taking the time to watch! I really appreciate it! I’ve learned so much from you about Paphiopedilum’s that I ventured into this genus. I’ve had them about 6 months and they are still alive and growing! So thank you for giving me a good base of knowledge because I think that’s why they are still alive! Have a wonderful day!
I'm slowly catching up on your vids...thanks for sharing your thoughts! We all have to adjust our setups to match our plants. I failed in WC in the beginning because I literally did everything wrong...lol. I just learned to listen to the plants better and as long as they grow happily, the setup doesn't matter. Love learning from you! :)
I really like Orchids and have tried most of your methods and failed dismally 😭not sure whether is the UK weather that’s frustrating me and the orchids I’m just about to give up on something I love so much I’m sad .I’ve turned out to be a murderer as soon as I put them on water culture but hey keep up sharing your experiences with us as it helps and make me feel I’m not the only one struggling at times. I love your garden by the way and those orchids really love you 👏🏽
Thanks for the great info over this time. Water culture has been a 99% success for me on my second try. But there is always that one difficult one. I have several stories to tell, but would take too long. Thanks again.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 I know I was supposed to wait for warmer weather, but several started having issues. Investigation found their roots in terrible shape, so while the roots were exposed anyway I just decided, Why not. They seem to be improving, 2 out of 3 anyway. I just have to save them, they are Cattleya mossiae.
Thank you so much Danielle for your very informative videos! Yours are the best in my view. I have tried water culture in past and failed. But now I will try again with more knowledge thanks to you! 👍🤗
Thank you very much! I so appreciate your knowledge , and morover your jenerosity in spreading your knowledge. It has been so helpful to me and my phalaenopsis collection. Bless you
What lights are they using? Great info as always! I still don’t have guts to start a water culture but I am telling you, I will make one! Thank you for sharing! I now am jumping to your care collab video...
I am using barrina strip lights I found on Amazon. They seem to be doing the trick. Not as bright as day light but the other grow light I had was way to strong and burned them even from across the room! If you start a Phal in Semi Water Culture in the spring it’s almost guaranteed to work for you. It’s just a lot of work. Instead of just watering it once a week you have to put the water in and then remember to dump it a day or two later. I know your really busy. Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Hi Danielle, hope you are well. I am a newer subscriber of your channel. I am trying water culture for my phase wanted to check how your fertilise the Phals in water. Do you have recommendations for the type of Fertiliser to use. I am based in Melbourne Australia
Lovely video Danielle! Those blooms 🤩 Remember my two sad cattleyas? They are still sad... I'll try giving them a media that doesn't hold water, but allow them to feel secure 🙃 thanks for the tip Danielle!
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 I hope so 😅 they didn't care for my version of semi-hydro or swc, but I forgot that they like to feel secure 🙈 poor things 🤗 I'll try pebbles with a soak and total flush cycle and hope that will get them going (they've survived since November '19 😅)
Nice video I to grow in water culture though I have tweaked the system so hard I can probably give my method a name. I am still fine-tuning it. My best tip before going to water culture learn to read the plant or as I like to say learn to speak plant.
Thanks for this great informative video! I have a question: When you put an orchid in a glass, is it mostly supported by the bottom two leaves which touch the rim of the glass or does is "stand" on the roots which touch the bottom of the glass? I don't want to either damage the root tips, cause the plant is quite heavy, but I also don't want the bottom leaves to suffer. Thank you!
Danielle I have a mini phal that is in full water culture because it's leaves wrinkled. That solved the problem and that worked and leaves became turgid again. I then dumped the water out to leave just a little bit and overnight the leaves wrinkled again. Now I can't get the wrinkles out of the leaves. HELP! message me please!
Hi Danielle Your video is most inspiring. I noticed some of my phalaenopsis have white mealy bugs. I have been removing them with a microbrush, of course this doesn't fix the problem. Can you advise what to do please? Julie Mid-west Western Australia
Hi Danielle, for the rootless Phal, I can see the bare roots ( no velamin) still on the plant. Are they functioning ie absorbing water form the glass vessel? I am asking because I was given a grocery store mini phal to hopefully rescue. All of the roots that were buried in the moss plug are papery. There are a few short aerial roots. And two full stems of blooms. Should I cut off the bloom stalks? Are the blooms sucking energy from the plant that it would need for growing more roots? Should I remove the papery velamin and leave the wiry root cores intact? Thank you in advance for your answers! Teresa
Hello Teresa, I’m sorry it took so long for me to reply, you she definitely take the papery velamen off. The bare roots do absorb water but not very much. Try soaking the aerial roots with warm water, that helps them hydrate quicker. Don’t overwater it because if she’s getting enough water she won’t see a need to grow new roots. Let me know how this goes! Thanks for watching!
Very helpful advices👌 In the meantime my complex Phals I transitioned in the summer are doing well, they all have spikes but developping very slowly. They seem very thirsty which is no wonder as they are in a cosy room in a south facing window with plenty of light, even some direct sun until a week ago. And 2 weeks ago, as day lengh is increasing and temperatures are rising I decided to start the transition of my Phal species and primary hybrids. I started with little water but they seem quite thirsty although they are in my lounge which is a large space with less light (in a west facing window) than the complex Phals and therefore not as warm. I have not lost any root so far but two of the Phals have one older leaf starting to turn yellow 🤔 I am doing semi wc with these ones and keeping a close eye on them to give them water when I feel they need it. I hope I am doing it right😳 Thank you very much for all your useful information. Wishing you a lovely weekend❤️💖🤩
Fernanda! Thank you so much for watching! Sounds like you are really paying attention to your plants, best possible way to end up with happy plants! My species Phals were so easy to convert, they loved it right away. I’m glad they are all doing so well for you! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Great info thank you for sharing your care tips it's very interesting. Happy growing : ) In the winter time how high or low you keep your temperature at??
It really depends on the type of orchid you have, some orchids will grow in a variety of conditions and some do need specific care to make them happy. If you are just growing Phalaenopsis they are typically pretty easy-going and will grow in almost any home environment. I recommend research before purchasing a particular type of orchids so you will know if you can give them the care they need in your environment.
Love your videos! When u put the Cattleya in double plastic cups, after soaking them in water and drained... are you concerned about No Airflow with the outer cup having no drainage holes?
Not until the root system gets extensive. Because I use the glass beads there is no break down of media so the air space is maintained. Until the roots go crazy and they have to be put in bigger set ups, which is what I am facing with many of them. Big project ahead of me!
I don’t have a video because I’m not very informed about this subject. I did some very basic research and then purchased an inexpensive set of lights from Amazon. I will try to educate myself better on this subject so I can be more helpful.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 Thank you! I love your videos and since it’s starting to warm up here in Indiana, I might try semi water culture in a couple weeks to icu my orchid!
My roots are still plump, clear water and the water reaches the stem through the roots, but the top leaves are turning soft 8 days into water culture. Any suggestions what could be happening as it seems the top leaves are getting dehydrated?
