Lessons Learned: Hitler's Rearmament of Germany

On March 16, 1935, Adolf Hitler announced that he would rearm Germany in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler revealed that Germany had begun to construct an air force, and unveiled plans to reinstitute conscription and create a German army of more than half a million men. Britain, France, Italy, and the League of Nations all issued statements condemning Hitler's decision, but did little else to penalize Germany.
James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, notes that it was only on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, that "the rest of Europe confronted, rather than appeased, Hitler." This four-year delay, he argues, points to a basic difficulty in international relations. "Aggressive, expansionist states are most easily stopped early on when they are weak and vulnerable," he says, but "precisely because their capabilities are limited at that point--and their intentions can only be guessed at--it is often hard to persuade other countries to act."
This video is part of Lessons Learned, a series dedicated to exploring historical events and examining their meaning in the context of foreign relations today: • History Lessons

They will just use all the iron more efficient than anybody could imagine but if they had oil, their winter problem in Russia would have been eradicated. And europe would have been Nazi

Well if your entire plan to maintain peace in europe rest on such an awful treaty than you are a pretty big part of the problem.

0:40 the treaty was more like taking their chance to humiliate Germany without thinking of any consequences. In the end, that treaty triggered ww2

What you have to also remember are the corporations who backed Hitler. There was European, as well as American money behind Hitler.

In the movie, "The Godfather," when Peter Clemenza was briefing-in Michael Corleone, prior-to his very first Gangland hit, Michael asked him about the gang war that would certainly ensue, in its wake, and Clemenza was seeking to reassure Michael, that these sorts of things were normal, and had to happen, every three or four years, just to get rid of the bad blood, he went-ON to observe that, "It's like Hitler, in Munich: they shoulda never-let that get-STARTED; they was just ASKIN'-for BIG TROUBLE..."

The Versailles Treaty stipulated that Germany had to disarm first, then the other armies would do the same. Germany held it's part of the bargain by completely disarming but once it came time for the others to do so, they refused. That's when Hitler announced the creation of a small force for defensive purposes, here's the transcript: der-fuehrer.org/reden/english/35-03-16.htm
@thegamingchef3304
@thegamingchef3304 2 года назад
Knowing how Hitler broke many treaty's it's actually a good thing other nations didn't unarm. France pretty much unarmed and didn't keep their military updated and got conquered by the Nazis in like 6 weeks.
@harmlessdrudge
@harmlessdrudge 2 года назад
Germany did not disarm after WWI. There was secret rearmament in the 1920s, aided by the Soviet Union.

OK. here's one for the "logic" of history At 0:45 mins "...the Treaty of Versailles to stop Germany from threatening the rest of Europe ever again..." Why should a democratic Germany, treated fairly after WW1, be a threat to "the rest of Europe" ?
@ralphbernhard1757
@ralphbernhard1757 10 лет назад
At 1:30 mins "Hitler announced the....army of half a million men...and the air force...etc." Maybe because Germany's sincere and kind neighbors were armed to the teeth. Would have been a joke to try and keep the status quo (therefore the Treaty of Versailles), while countries like Poland, Czechoslovakia, France and Russia were spending a multitude of what pre-1935 Germany was. Wouldn't it have been wiser to call for a TOTAL reduction in arms by all European nations? In 1935/36 it wasn't too late for a peaceful settlement of differences, just nobody came forward to take the first step at reducing their own forces.

A good historical analysis. I do not see why you view China as a threat to world peace. It is Iran alone which is making a military expansion. China can not afford a war with its vulnerabilities!
@xornxenophon3652

Well, China cannot affort a war NOW; we do not know what will be 20 years down the line. Who will stop China from conquering Taiwan, for example, if the US do not do so?

@kontinnuum
@kontinnuum 12 лет назад
@nitrohome Not at all. I am aware about Chinas military power. The vulnerabilities I am talking about have to do with sustaining a war. I know about the J20, the nukes, the PLA, etc.China has a very big conventional force. But I think that even a small country like Britain can serious harm china because of its unique global profile. I am not talking about military power. If you want me to explain further, please send me a private message :-)

You forgot to mention that Germany made 22 offers of peace and was ignored every time, then Churchill went on the radio and said "We'll take this war to Hitler whether he wants it or not". WW2 was a war that Germany and Japan could not win and therefore a war that neither of them wanted. Germany offered to surrender in 1943 (in Istanbul). That was ignored and the villainy continued. Japan offered to surrender several times and was ignored and the carnage continued. Then the atomic bombs were dropped with absolutely no justification. History books are written by the winners. Germany and Japan were set up to be treated like the Native Americans. Six American government departments have already said that Iran has no nuclear program. You're a liar.
