Paw Paw’s WorkShop I have been looking at that upgrade and the TBD upgrade not sure of the pros and cons on each. Did you get the riser side plates installed yet. Those do look like a good option to raise the gantry.
I got this same upgrade to my X-carve because the original mount had some serious chatter...squares were coming out rounded, and I finally got it up and running. The sturdiness of the CNC4N Z-axis compared to the original is night and day in its quality.
@@PawPawsWorkShop I would say the big hurdles I had to overcome were a) rewiring the motor connection, because going from the X-carve setup to the CNC4N setup, the motor direction is basically reversed, so I had to reverse the leads, and since it was taller, it needed more cable. and b) Apparently the calibration between the old motor on the X-carve and the one on the CNC4N was much different. Originally set at 188, the setting I found that worked was at 40. kind of embarrassing that I did a test carve, set it for 1/8 depth, but because the calibration was off, It went through the 1/2" stock, the 1/4" scrap/sacrifice board, and into the waste board.. but thanks to your calibration video, I was able to get the Z-axis calibration worked out.
@@PawPawsWorkShop At times, Easel didn't seem to recognize my machine, so I was redoing the setup.. seems the setup clears out some previously entered data--like the $102 Z axis line. That's where my real problem wound up being.. the Z-axis was resetting from 50.059 to 188.976.. No wonder that 1/8" depth test cut drove through my 1/2" stock, 1/4" spoilboard, and halfway into my wasteboard!
I had to rebuild my z axis from running the xcarve too fast(1800mm/sec). Judging from that smile it looks youre really happy with this upgrade. Great video!
Your tip about the brushes in the router worked . Now I have another problem. The last two carves I’ve done since I replaced the brushes have been off. In other words the design on the computer didn’t match up with what was being carved . Could my x-carve be out of calibration? I stopped today’s carve , when I noticed it was way off. The router did not return to the x, y coordina tes I set , it was way out of range. I would appreciate your advice on this, you’re usually spot on. Thanks again, Paw Paw.
It could be out of calibration but because it did not return to the start point, it sounds like you are loosing steps. Check the belts and the v wheels.
@@PawPawsWorkShop so the belts did need tightening, and that seemed to help a lot. I did a couple of test carves, and they did look a lot better . I’m still having issues with the x-carve not carving lines that should be straight, straight. The v wheels look ok. Any other suggestions Paw Paw? Thanks I appreciate your input. Dennis
If a straight line is not straight, then something else is loose. The belts need to be at about 3.5 lbs of tension when raised one inch from the middle. The v wheels need to be where it will turn with a little resistance when turning by hand.
Hey Paw Paw, once again you are the X-Carve genius!! The straight line issue I was having , was because of a loose V wheel , right of the top of the Dewalt router! You my man are “The Great One!!!”
Hi I watched your upgrade video and unboxing. It looked like you received the uprights as well. Did you ever install those on the XCarve? Great vid by the way.
Hi Pawpaw Just wondering what the overall height is? My original xcarve z axis is 260mm, what is the total height of the new one including motor and all? I have an enclosure that my xcarve is in and want to make sure it will fit before buying... Thanks! Aussie fan Travis
Great test, ordered the same Z axis, should be here next. I also ordered the heavier Y plates that CNCfornewbies offer. Are you going to upgrade yours?
Looks great 👌👍 curious about what the price point is for the ex-carve and the upgrade you did recently?? Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and videos Rodney
Thanks for posting this, Phillip. I can tell you’re really happy with this upgrade. Looking forward to seeing if J-Tech can fabricate a mount for your laser. If so, pls post a video. I won’t upgrade my Z until I’m sure I can use my laser
You're welcome. Yes, I am very happy with the upgrade. J-Tech is working on the mount now. When they are finished I will do a video and show you how it works.
I have a z axis on order for mine... not the same one as you but it should perform just as well... for the record mine is coming from TBDCNC.com I am really excited since seeing you upgrade. I also did the 2" rise and Y axis stiffeners... just waiting on my z to get here.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Did you have to increase your router speed when you were doing the new z axis cutting tests. As a rule I learned from you I keep my router set at 1 always. Thanks
