I feel every word you say, every word. As a Dutch mother and grandmother, I feel lonely because so many people are behind the US and Israel. It's almost Christmas, but I'm not looking forward to it this year; Cheerful myself eating full of food, knowing what's happening in Palestine, I think I'm skipping this year. I'm an American DiEM25 member, and have been completely heartbroken. Zionism has been using Judaism as a human shield to commit the most monstrous of atrocities. Here in the US, a vote was recently taken (in the House, our lower chamber) declaring that anti-Zionism is antisemitism. Only 13 progressives stood in clear opposition to this ludicrous and dangerous resolution. We witness daily what decades of brutal occupation and dehumanizing have done to the minds and souls of the occupiers. Like you, any "celebration" on my part will be extremely limited. @@FreedomForAll1- There are people in Israel who never accepted the dehumanization of Palestinians and always saw and treated them as equal human beings. But such people are really few. The vast majority of the “regular” people don’t wake up. They live in the niche of the state propaganda and simply don’t see the pictures from Gaza that the rest of the world see. It’s like Russians under Putin’s propaganda. Nothing can change their mind. When someone challenges their view, s/he will be labeled an “antisemite” or a traitor or a left-winger. Exactly the same as one year ago those who challenged the majority’s opinion in Russia were labeled “Russophobes.” Patriotism is an ugly thing. Leo Tolstoy described well its ugliness already some 120 years ago.

I moved to Germany from Egypt recently mainly for economic reasons but I also wanted my kids to be raised in a more free political atmosphere. I really wanted to be a proud German someday and really help this beautiful country grow even better and bigger as much as I can and I always dreamt of Germany as a leading world power for peace but the German political leaders (left and right) situation on the Gaza matter is making me question if I'm really living in a truly politically free country. Knowing Yanis and knowing that there are more people like him, good human beings, true to their values, open and honest brings me some hope that someday Europe will be a beacon for freedom and peace for everyone..
