Let’s talk about Tongue Bite & how to avoid it + a few remedies to relieve symptoms 

Remember like my pipe mentor said when I started pipe smoking in 1979 “it’s not the pipe or tobacco it’s you!” I’ve never forgotten that and did a video on it.

I've just started in the "pipe world". I have been binge watching your videos. Thank you for making them and helping out the newbies like me. There's so much information out there, and so many peoples opinions differ. It can be hard to distinguish it all.

Smoking a cigar fast will not give tongue bite but you will lose all the flavor in the cigar that way. I smokke cigars as slow as possible to get the most flavor just like a pipe. Great video!

Great vid! For all who suffer TB temporary relief can be found with Bioténe Mouthwash as well. The relief is almost within minutes, hours at worst. And for me im always reminded you smoke cigarettes but you enjoy a cigar and you alwats sip a pipe as if you had poured a dram of the most expensive cognac. I learned the hard way and suffered until given this remedy. Smooth sailing ever since! 🙂👍

Thanks Nathan for today's subject of TB that can hit anyone if smoked fast. I find warm milk is good to relieve any burning symptoms. but the best advise is to smoke slow and not to allow the bowl to over heat. You covered the subject well 👍 Btw loving the C&D Anthology it is really good. Enjoy your weekend

Thanks for a other informative video. I differ on one aspect. Even though I smoke with filters, I encourage new pipe smokers to first try standard non filtered pipes and even if they get a bit of tongue bite to persevere with checking humidity, cadence, packing method etc etc before moving to filters. Ultimately non filtered pipes will give you a better experience and access to a much broader range of pipes. If however you can’t cope with tongue bite despite your best efforts then definitely go to 9mm filtered pipes and that will change your smoking experience completely, as it did mine. All the best

Well done Nathan for another important subject that you addressed perfectly. I sometimes feel the heat especially on some of Mac Baren blends that i found that using a charcoal filter and by sipping the smoke & drinking coffee while smoking those blends that i enjoy helps to eliminate any harshness. As you rightly say Meerschaum & churchwarden pipes also cool the smoke. Nathan what is that short Savinelli you showed briefly it is a gorgeous pipe

I only smoke English blends with a Peterson System P lip (no filter) for exactly that reason. I haven't had tongue bite since

When I was a new pipe smoker I often got tongue bite. The best remedy I found then was baking soda (natrium/sodium bicarbonate) gently rubbed on the tongue 👅 greatly reduces tongue bite. I leave the soda on the tongue for a few seconds spit the excess. I still use this method even now, even tho I don’t have tongue bite any more, the alkalinity of the bicarbonate neutralizes the acidity of tobacco smoke.

For tongue bite also, cut a nice thick slice of cucumber and hold in your mouth for a bit. That helps me. Good advice Nathan its good to see you my friend

Good vid Nathan, like the churchwarden- i want one! What model is it? Not the vauen, the smaller one. Cant get on with 6mm, but use 9mm all the time.

I love the vaper Fillmore and started smoking it with a 6mm filter. At first the reduced draw annoyed me but I got used to it after awhile and now I rather like it as it also slows my cadence. Thanks for another great video! Also, I only ever use a 6mm filter once. 9mm filter I can can two smokes out of it if I take the filter out of the pipe and allow it to dry out for a day or so.

I smoke mostly churchwardens and I haven't had an issue with tongue bite.

I've used the natural mouthwash. I don't cope with tongue bite but it is a better way to refresh the mouth before kissing the wife.

The whole “long stem cools the smoke” is bupkiss! That’s like saying a longer barrel gun will slow down a bullet. Or am I krazy? Either way I love your channel. Just disagreeing in a respectable way. ❤️
