I like this guy. New to the pipe. I'm quitting cigarettes because I no longer enjoy them , I feel more like scratching an itch then relaxing. yet I love tobacco so now I'm seeking the fine arts involved, this guy got it figured out
Same here, smoked cigarettes for 20 years, decided recently that was enough, I have been off them for 3 weeks so far. I also enjoy tobacco, and I have discovered that pipe smoking is a excellent way to do so, with greatly reduced health risks (compared to cigarettes)
bruce jordan hey mate; I gave up the cigs using Allen Carr’s - easy way to quit smoking - and it was easy!! He does mention that quitting all smoking is quitting... I actually did for 3 years and am now smoking the pipe because it’s more pleasant and I don’t draw back; so can get the nice pleasure and enjoy the patience of the pipe.. 🙏🏼💦
Not sure if anyone has already touched on this in the comments, but here in Canada we also have the Brigham brand which is known to use a rock maple "distillator", essentially a hollowed wooden dowel with a press-fit metal end. These are meant to cut down the moisture and acid from the smoke. It does seem to help and I enjoy them a lot. Happy piping!
New pipe smoker here. Your channel is the best and has helped me tremendously. I like that you don't force your opinions on anyone, even though we agree on everything so far, lol. I seem to be a wet smoker myself and I enjoy my pipes better with a filter. I change them every two or three bowls. P.S. Who the heck downvotes these vids? 5 people are just negative and don't like anything I suppose...
Tom Miller - thank you my friend, I tend to go back and forth sometimes I use them sometimes I don't, I am currently using them. Yeah, about the thumbs down, I have troll groupies, most of my videos have 8, but really it doesn't bother me. 👍👍👍
i know im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I love any tricks you can give me!
I too use Filters. I am a wet smoker and still a bit of a novice (I started back in around 2017ish but then stepped away and have since returned). I’m also paranoid for my health. I know my risk of cancer won’t go away as long as I’m putting smoke in my mouth, but if I can maximize my chances of removing a big chunk of those carcinogenic materials, I’ll do it. It’s like crossing a busy street. You can’t stop the odds of being struck by a car and dying, but you can be vigilant and see when there’s a big enough gap for you to cross.
I personally love using filters. Drier smoke, and in some cases, better taste, in my opinion. The 9mm filters even seem to help me keep the smoke temp from getting too hot. Good video!
I would need it. I tried my dad's thick black tobacco. Brutal tasting. I want to try a pipe and need to get a nice one. Normally I smoke rollups and cigars. Even with Rollup's special brand, I get out the tobacconist. Well, I guess it's more so special since the company doesn't really do a lot of business in my country. Either way lovely tobacco and has no additives. German company Pueblo comes dry naturally but is a good smoke. Natural American Spirit is another one I believe but I prefer the Pueblo. Just got a bit nicer taste.
I love you don't make it about snobs but enjoying yourself. It's why I enjoy some of the "cheap" tobaccos more than others while sipping a whiskey/bourbon. You really get the enjoyment of a pipe!
Very good explanation, sir! I always recommend a filtered pipe (specifically a 9mm filtered pipe and charcoal filters) for new and nearly new pipe smokers. Once you've gotten the hang of smoking a pipe with a filter in place, you can always smoke a filtered pipe without a filter in place to see if you find it more or less enjoyable. I find that filters lessen tongue-bite and don't affect the taste detrimentally. In fact, I find that filters help to focus the taste of the tobacco for me. And 9mm charcoal filters virtually eliminate tongue bite. Thanks for all of your informative videos! I know many of us miss your regular content. Hope you are well!
How is that going? I'm trying to make that switch now from cigs to pipes now. I have all kinds of pipes, tobaccos, and supplies that I've collected in preparation, so I have no excuses. Hopefully I can learn to enjoy a pipe a day or less eventually.
@@ramsesosirus It is going well. I have a pipe almost every day and I will quit if I ever feel an addiction. It has been positive so far and it doesn't make the house stink.
@@jeffreylewison Cool, great job! I'm on like day 5 without any cigs and been relying on the pipe for my nicotine- probably more than I should but no cigarettes is step 1! I'm starting to taste and enjoy the different tobaccos more as well. Everyone around me has said the pipe tobacco smells much better than cigarettes, some even said it smells good
I really like how you talk about smoking being a relaxing, contemplative action. You've painted the picture of it in my mind as a spiritual sort of practice, like meditation. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for your advices! This really helps. I enjoy listening to you since you explain everything patiently and step by step. I'm new to pipe smoking and trying out some pipes and tobaccoes. Your videos are lovely, well-made and insightful. Greetings from Germany.
Since I started watching these videos my knowledge has increased greatly in regards to tobacco knowledge and smoking techniques. Pipe smoking have ruduced my stress greatly and I appreciate these videos for the assistance.
I, quite honestly, like your presentation. I am 78 years old. I used to smoke cigerettes quite heavily. Turning on to pipes has helped me do away with cigerettes. I am using these activated charcoal filters &I do not inhale. I am learning a lot from your presentation. Thank you!
I never enjoyed filters until I discovered the charcoal ones, white elephant I use, it helps a lot for my tongue to not get burnt and also reduces the moisture and cleaning a lot. Depending the mood I take the filter out sometimes but overall it’s very good to have the option.. say if I’m reading or studying and know I’ll be using my pipe for a while filter smooths the whole time.. if I’m gonna be chopping wood or something that I want the tobacco “kick” to get goin’ I don’t use filters.
Thank you for your videos full of mindfullness and respect for people and what you talking about. I listen to them with a big pleasure. Best wishes! Maciej
Thanks for this video and the other ones you have posted. By using your guides and advice I was able to smoke my first bowl today. It was spectacular! Keep it up!
Matt, you don't know what that means to me, my goal was to help new pipe smokers get started, and ease the frustration of struggling pipe smokers, I am glad I have been able to help. 👍👍👍😃
I like that whole "smoke it how you do" theory of yours. Im learning now to clench and breath method for a minute or two before needing to grab again, thanks to you. Wish u kept makin videos. Even touching on old topics again would give new opinions and views.👍👍
Well balanced and informative commentary. Only thing I think you could have mentioned for the Dr. Perl 9mm filters is that the blue end goes toward the mouth, not the bowl direction. Some new smokers get confused about that. Otherwise very good video, thanks.
Hey Muttnchop, I enjoy watching your videos please keep them coming. I've been using filters and really enjoy the pipe smoking experience much more than I did before without them, I still enjoy smoking my unfiltered pipes but I find myself smoking my filtered pipes more often.
I enjoy my pipe with a filter in as well, I use a lot less pipe cleaners, and I don't get any loss in taste, much more relaxing. Thanks for viewing my video. 👍👍👍👍😃
Accidentally used a filter that came pre-installed in a pipe (with my daily tobacco) and didnt notice for 3 full bowls! Guess it doesn't always dull flavor haha. Great video!
I don't really notice any loss in flavor, but some people do, my advice to people is try using a filter for a few days, if it improves the pipe smoking experience use them, if not, then don't. 😃😃😃
i love your being objective, i like it when people express their opinion without forcing a specific point of view as the only right one. keep up your videos, you deserve a lot more views and likes!
Muttnchop- thanks for the great video, and thanks for reinforcing that a piper should enjoy it, their own way. I've gotten snide comments over the years over using filters, and choosing aromatics, even though I don't exclusively pick either. Usually it had the effect of me choosing not to interact with that person anymore, but sometimes it makes me feel like I'm a second class piper, even though I know I'm not.
This is the greatest channel I've come across thank you man! I just picked up the pipe to make my cigar puffing life a little more interesting and the depth and vibe of pure senserity are awesome in your videos. I'm enjoying what I'm learning and will keep going down this rabbit hole. Pipe smoking is truly the black powder of tobacco lol
I use 1 or even 2 intertwisted thinner pipe cleaners cut to length. Replace it every smoke. Separate from cleaning with one. Just seems more thick to trap more. Have an opinion on this mutton??
@@davidarbelaez4395 I get it David, I get it. Now that I've noticed that common American error*, I can't not notice it wherever I see it and it bugs my brain. I know some people won't get this but it's the opposite of _wanting_ to notice this stuff - I'd love for it to not bug me whenever I see it, that's the point! It's like seeing a wonky painting hung on a wall-it doesn't _matter_ but your brain's compelled to straighten it up. *specifically American because it's those accents that pronounce "then" and "than" the same way; I'm English and the words don't sound the same thus people don't mix them up (I'm saying this because I know some will take offence and think I'm picking on their nationality)
MoonlitVibe not necessarily. The American accent varies greatly from state to state, and in some areas it varies from town to town - sort of like birmies sound much different than Londoners. I Southern California people from the San Fernando valley have a completely different accent that those people hailing from Fresno, and they’re quite close to one another.
I appreciate you telling everyone to do what they like, every hobby has those know it alls that insist their way is the only way. Well done. Got my sub
Luv your videos! I just purchased my first 9mm filtered pipe after not using 9mm filters for 20 plus years, although I do have filtered cobs and the savinelli pipes which I could not tell much difference with the savinelli filter systems. Can't wait to try some of those questionable aromatics with that 9mm. Subscribed.
I make balsa filters out of the super light contest grade wood. I can really taste the difference a filter adds. Great vids . enjoy them all... Robert.
``The more work it is, the less relaxing it is`` Well said, sir 👌! Also, this is one of the clearest video ever made on this topic in my opinion. Thank you for posting this.
I’m not new to smokin a pipe but I stopped for a long time n just recently got back into it after about 10 years. I’ve never used filters before but I’m thinkin about givin it a try cuz I’m a wet smoker n I’m goin thru a lot of pipe cleaners. This video was pretty helpful for me👍
Fresh new pipe smoker. Always thought that things like smoking or drinking - is about personal preference and the question of what works for you. Glad to see someone using common sense in their videos.
I usually use a filter, I enjoy a pipe either way but I find smoking with a filter a better experience. A filter just makes things easier and helps prevent "oops" moments. Nothing ruins a good smoke like a mouthful of ash from the bottom of the bowl lol
You sir have the right idea, make it your own. I'm fairly young, 30 years old and am getting into some old school rituals for my relaxation and mental health. I've recently started wet shaving, and the longer process is so much more relaxing than modern shaving methods. It seems that pipe smoking is pretty much along the same lines. I'll continue to watch your videos and suck up all the info and tips that I can.
New pipe smoker here. Quit cigarettes 5 years ago and started vaping, sick of that so bought me a pipe, Much better now and your channel is very helpful thanks.
Thank you sir, I really appreciate everything you said from 7:56 on. That sort of straightforward kindness is why I'm subscribed. More people should take that lesson to heart.
Brynn - As you can tell I was a little passionate in this section, I hate it when someone try’s to impose their will on someone else using intimidation, or shame, my point is try smoking a pipe with a filter, and without, both ways are correct, you choose for yourself which one is right for you. 👍👍👍
I just started smoking a pipe and I'm so happy you have this channel and you explain everything so well even a novice smoker like myself can understand. Thank you sir for these educational videos and God bless
With or without a filter is like choosing to drink coffee white or black or eating a stake rare or medium or well done. Be an individual, make your own choice and enjoy yourself!
Though this video was uploaded more than a year ago, I'd like to my leave my little contribution. I've always been using filters since I bought my first pipe and totally agree with you, there're a huge amount of pipe smokers who simply makes you feel like a rookie when talking about that point. Yes, they had the 'theory' of that any kind of filter takes out all the pleasant aroma of pipe tobacco and that a real 'professional' smoker must never use it. The last thing I was told is that filters were invented by germans to smoke their awful aromatic tobaccos!...no words. That said, I want to mention that the balsa system of almost all Savinelli range are only designed to absorb the moisture, in fact that's the only relevant thing that everyone will notice. I tried to use my pipes without them and felt again that disgusting sensation of being a 'wet smoker', feel so disgusting for can not properly enjoy a good mixture that decided to stop buying more Savinelli pipes. The other kind of filters (cartridges) can be very useful, especially the meerschaum ones, personally I can only use a filter a couple of times and always changing it before the second bowl (let dry the first one, never use it wet). The second kind, are the charcoal ones, just a bit cheaper (I'm talking about bags of 240 pieces) but with these I'd a bad experience, as flavour missing is quite noticeable and they became very wet and dirty just during the first bowl. Trust this info be of any help and thank you for all your uploadings, great channel.
Good video! I like how you titled your playlist, "The Art of Pipesmoking." While there are obviously some things that need to be done right like cleaning and deep cleaning, pipesmoking is mainly an art, not really a science per say. When I started pipesmoking I very quickly found that there are widely divergent opinions about some things, which all deserve consideration but you really have to sort through them all and find the best thing for you personally and not shame others for doing things differently.
Im not a wet smoker at all but a filter makes me more comfortable, and it is seemingly less harsh. Your videos are so helpful Muttonchop, love them!! just bought a bunch of mason jars and labels for my tobacco because of your vid!!
I know this is an old video - but you have a great library of information on your channel. Now, I have an auto-immune disorder and am prone to lung issues (and yeah, unfortunately, I have to moderate how many pipes I smoke). I find that 9mm (elephant or 'Big Ben' ) filters, plus keystones in the bottom is the best combo for my usually wet smokes (Montreal is very humid all year). I smoke a lot of Nightcap, Germain's rich dark flake and Bob's Chocolate Flake (my regular smokes), all of which I find slightly wet. It helps tremendously and I don't think it harms the taste at all. I am going to be experimenting with natural chalk granules (food grade, non-toxic) as it's significantly cheaper.
Thank you for your advice, I was trying to read about filters in forums but all they talked about is the type of tobacco or how they smoke a pipe, no-one really got to the point and said hey I use a filter and I change it out after 3 or 4 bowls.
Very informative thanks for the insight, I'm definitely a wet smoker, and I deal with the tobacco getting in my mouth at times so I will definitely be testing out some filters, thanks!
I tried using a balsa wood filter from Missouri Meerschaum and was surprised by the amount of tar and gunk it picked up. Now, I use them all the time. I understand that there is a range of opinions and preferences, and I love it that MP respects the idea that pipe smoking is a personal endeavor.
I had no idea folks used filters for more than on bowl... Although I'm a wet smoker so I use a new filter each bowl. Thanks for another great video Muttnchop Piper, next time I won't freak out when I'm low on filters!
To be frank, Muttonchop, the thing I like the most about your videos is your candor about how each one should smoke the way they want and the way pleases them the most.
Erico Fadel - Thank you my friend, it’s like anything else, what works fo me, may not work for you, and it’s ridiculous to think my way is the right, and only way, all I can do is convey what works for me, and it’s up to you to try it or no. 👍👍👍
Excellent information and excellent ending! I mostly use filters in all of my smokes but will sometimes go without depending upon the tobacco. I do see a lot of shaming of folks who use filters. Thanks for standing up!
I've been watching your videos... and I absolutely agree with you... the bottom line is , let's just enjoy our favourite tobacco in our favourite pipe...❗👍
I tend to do something weird as a filter. I had an old cotton shirt that i cut small squares out of. It mainly absorbs a lot of moisture. And because it's just a piece of cloth it fits in my corncob pipes
Thank you for an indepth discussion on filters. I usually use filters on all my pipes and have 3 that do not have filters. I notice no difference in flavor or enjoyment on the filtered pipes. I prefer them as I too am a wet smoker, both Engilsh and Aromatic blends. I rarely smoke my unfiltered pipes now but on occasion do.
Anyone who thumbs down your videos clearly has their thumbs up.. well. Where the sun don't shine. I usually pack a bowl and watch some of your videos when I'm winding down for the night and you've honestly helped me tremendously. Keep 'em coming, sir!
somesayinfire - thumbs down don't bother me, and let's be honest, my delivery is not all that smooth, and some of my videos have my alarm system beeping in the background (Malfunctioning at the time) although the content is sound they are far from perfect. 👍👍👍
Excellent advise to novices, smoke how you feel and enjoy pipe smoking, there is no right way or wrong way in smoking a pipe do it your way advice is always good the decision is yours, thanks for sharing
