I live in Hawaii and some Pokémon cards/ items are hard to come by. It’s a great option for me to get different things that are not coming into the island I live on. But all my purchases are within reason and if I think it’s to much for my budget I’m fine with passing.
Whatnot as a concept is fine on the surface, the execution of it is a little wonky as some of the sellers are dodgey. The carnival games are actually illegal by most state laws if you look at the gaming acts. I predict once local governments catch wins of it, you'll see substantial fines and changes. Take away the gaming/ gambling aspects it becomes a lot more bearable. Buying sealed product can be an issue, if it be packs or boxes. Many cases of boxes being resealed and the big hits being removed. Obviously not all sellers are like this, but it's difficult to discern. There are a lot of ways to creatively rig the packs too ahead of time. Singles on auction seem to be the safest but even then your cards can be swapped out for an inferior condition card. Even when you rip packs, you might get sent your big hit but it'll be one with worse centering. While the breaker is keeping the tens to side as they come out of the packs. Ultimately people have fun with it, and grown adults can participate in whatever platform or spend their money however they want. Some people need to learn the hard way or find the breakers they trust. Yeah, buying packs for above MSRP doesn't make any sense. Especially considering shipping plus not getting bulk. I guess people just like the online live stream break portion of it and enjoy that and don't mind paying extra just for that. Definitely not for me, though I have used whatnot for sudden death $1 singles. And have picked up the odd deal. You can pretty quickly discover which rooms have schill bidding when you see nothing go under value. Like you said, the right people would make the difference.
That’s great! I’m hearing both sides of the story trying to really get a good idea of how bad it really is or how much it’s made folks happy. Goes both ways. 😎🙏🏼
I don't even open packs myself because I see it as a waste of money, parecipating in a box break would need me to be drunk on multiple different things lol As for doing box breaks as a whole I mean it's an easy way to make money for youtubers like Jake for sure and a fun one at that so as long as they don't do shady stuff I don't see why not. Aside from the fact that using that site will for sure get some of your audience scammed by one of the other sellers that randomly pops up in the raccomanded but not much to do about that I suppose :/ That said, I'll be getting my case of 151 UPCs, even though the best price I can find right now is €120 each I'm sure it'll be worth it in the long run and as much as I think the japanese set is better on all fronts (I'm aslo 100% JP collector so I'm biased lol) I really, REALLY don't like the idea of spending almost 5 times MSRP no matter the returns, that's a bit too much xV
Great points and thanks for adding to the discussion. It could be fun for sure and I get it, it’s way more affordable to open for everyone and shares the boxes so everyone can have an experience. Agreed on the Japanese set being a bit steep already but definitely great potential there.
Funny how one month ago I said buy all the 151 on retail. I bought all the mini tins about 40 at walmart. I git ripped by the community. Dont buy it all leave some for us. Dont give financial advice. I didnt care i bough everything retail for 50 miles around me 😂😂😂
People love to hate and preach morals but the reality is most people would not buy that product for retail as retail usually costs more. That product would probably sit or slowly sell. You spent the time and effort going everywhere you should reap the rewards. Now I’m not saying scalping is good but if you’re buying for your collection to hold on to I can’t knock it. I prefer buying in stores too but even I don’t shop that much in stores anymore so somebody has to 😂
@@orionsires ya I get stalked by security everytime. ...btw I just pulled my first God pack. Venosaur variant. Walmart 151 mini tins are str8 fire at 9.99 in my area. U cant beat that brother!!!! Imo these tins go to 50; a pop in a few years Yes im hoarding them sealed 🤐🤐
Ive started buying in on weiss schwarz and one piece breaks on whatnot, and it’s been really fun! Haven’t been scammed once and I have pulled a few $100+ cards. Just be careful who you buy from. I typically watch a stream and see if I feel like I can trust a seller before buying.
Hey you're only human big dog, do whats best for you're health wealth and family. Personally I see myself using only youtube to view streams, not a fan of downloading a bunch of other platforms on my phone atleast, don't even have a pc right now. The followers will grow on here i think its just a slower drip than other platforms possibly. Who knows, but in the future i might check out whatnot, I've seen a few streams, but been channeling my money to other more modern cards.
Yeah same I don’t need even more distractions and crap to do lol and I would highly recommend buying cards on eBay versus whatnot. But from my limited experience whatnot does look fun if run properly by the right people. But what do I know lol 😂
I was absolutely OBSESSED with Pokemon when it first hit the US in 99. Being 10 and ripping a pack to find a holo was something truly special and i still remember it fondly. For some mystery, i decided to jump back in 25 years later and have been riding a huge nostalgia high on ripping packs again. Obviously 151 is like the coolest set ever for us that were there back in the base sets. I have really enjoyed your content and hope you continue to enjoy the hobby and building your channel. Your passion is obvious and you are clearly not one of these guys cashing in on a trend. Cheers!
These kinds of comments make my day! Love hearing peoples stories coming back to it! 151 reminds me of evolving skies it was a great time to join pokemon modern collecting. It is definitely different for us that experienced the craze as a kid and so the vintage aspect for me is very fulfilling but modern sets like 151 dominate for this reason. Hits you with a nice shot of nostalgia! I don’t even have any really 151 because I keep opening mine but I definitely advise people to buy into it. Pokémon considers what sells well so if we all buy 151 they’ll know it was a smash hit and maybe do something like it again. I personally thing more OG style sets whether they are main sets or special sets should/will do better. It’s not just cause we grew up with them it’s because the original designs cannot be beaten for classics such as charizard Blastoise and venusaur … they are the coolest looking pokemon to me (also Pikachu Rayquaza and Groudon) anything gen 1-3 is a sweet spot for me. Anyways glad you enjoyed the content. I have really enjoyed seeing the channel and community grow. 😎🙏🏼
What not is a cancer to this hobby! 95% are either scamming or just pushing junk slabs worth literally less than the plastic they're incased in. And using gambling hype to pump em and dump for 3-4 times what it's worth or ever will be worth
I have heard your side of the story from others as well and I understand it is more the people not so much the platform. The platform could be good with the right people and maybe they are trying to do that still. Maybe the community cracks down on this trend and it dies out. Will be interesting to see as well as to see who else joins the ranks of whatnot. Thanks for sharing and giving your input to the situation. 😎🙏🏼
I think ppl need to stop worrying about what Jake is doing and worry about themselves. If he wants to make extra money doing whatnot well good for him. He's not hurting anyone or scamming or ripping ppl off so who cares? At the same time all these other poketubers are calling Jake out for flip flopping they're using him as a way to farm content. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
Content creators make money from their channels, end of story. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s all business. Money is the thing that keeps the world spinning. I don’t mind box breaks, I have more money than time. So for me to be at work and spend a premium for them to open for me is worth it. I spend around 5k a month on the hobby and I have no regrets haha
I’m with u on the negativity in the community, I completely stopped watching certain “poke tubers” it was the same over and over. Appreciate these talks and being real about it
I typed multiple time in last weeks livestream saying 151 is at target and no response, then my comment saying how you can set notifications when they come back and is the only comment that didn’t get an impression makes me think you don’t really wanna know when 151 bundles are in 😂
Sorry fam sometimes my chats get all weird and other times I just don’t see the comment to respond in time but I appreciate you for pointing that out! I will get in on the next drop 😎🙏🏼
New subscriber here, you got me when you mentioned about how it is more difficult to speak good about someone else and it is easier to just gravitate towards the criticism bandwagon. Big up on that.😁
Absolutely and that’s the truth of it all, I’m glad you enjoyed the content and thank you for subscribing ! I work very hard to build this channel organically. 😎🙏🏼
I do not understand the flack that 2BJ is getting. Whatnot is a platform for selling and breaking cards. It serves as satisfying a demand. Notable bad actors shouldn't demoralize a platform.
I am kind of thinking the same, yet I understand he contradicts himself I just don’t see it enough reason for trying to bring him down… yes he f*^% up but don’t we all? The platform handled by the right folks could be great. Maybe he’s a good fit after all. 😎
It's because 90% of whatnot is FRAUD AND DECEPTION. To even involve yourself with that when you say you care about the community is disgusting as heck!! Would you involve yourself in penny stock and cryptocurrency fraud when you can legally make vast amount of money in the stock market? The Dbags do, and this is a perfect analogy for 2bj and whatnot.
@@dakingseaniii I think dpm pat Flynn is working on it another platform that is very similar for printing out labels and managing emails he mentioned it in his last interview
A lot of people on whatnot are over pricing items for sure. Whatnot does have fees but it still doesn't give an excuse to charge as much as some of the streamers do. I myself have a whatnot channel and I wont say the name of it here, but we try to sell at market on the platform. It isn't easy because of the fees but since we get the cards in at under market we can sell cards at or below market on the platform as well. Like you said, it takes the right people on the platform to make it a good place to buy. It isn't always the sellers either. People come to try and take advantage of new streamers and low ball or only come for the free give away. The platform isn't the problem in my opinion. It's the people who try to exploit it and take advantage. Its sad but I think the entire Pokémon community is getting infected by people who are looking to exploit it in any way to make a quick profit.
Overall enjoyed reading this comment but I’m glad you agree… the entire hobby is going through the wringer and whatnot is a small but controversial part of it. The main issue is the box breaks for me. It saddens me to see them broken for small profits. I actually should start a trend of don’t break vintage boxes !!! Preserve them for the history!! 😂😎
Whatnot and box breaks are not my cup of tea but as long as you don’t do any scam or shady stuffs then you do you 🙂 finally find some 151 mini tins in local Walmart 😂 only 3 tins but I will take them 😤 I know 151 UPCs still available in many stores but I’m on budget so bundles and mini tins are what I’m looking for 😭
"I think we should worry about water running out before we worry about Pokemon cards running out" 😆Couldn't be more true, outside of vintage with the rate that they are printing these sets I wouldn't be surprised if all that is left on Earth after humanity perishes is Mother Nature and mountains of cardboard. As always, love the insights and just keepin it real. Hope you've been well!!
I agree with most of what you had to say about box breaks and what not. I’m a skeptic by nature. So obviously that platform is out for me. I’m sure there is honest sellers there. I’m not willing to lose money until I find them. Now with box breaks. Like most, I don’t like paying premiums. Maybe in person not on an online platform. The drama part, in most cases I believe nothing good can of it. But with the guy you mentioned. For me is the hypocrisy of it. It shows that he’s not the person everybody thought he was.
Yeah I hear ya on whatnot and box breaks. I think it’s good to be a skeptic. I would do one in person as well 100%. Nothing good comes of drama and except for bad press so it can be good for views regardless but that’s not my aim entirely. Yeah I get the idea of someone flipping their viewpoint when money is involved how bad that looks but it’s what makes the world go around as another commenter had said. Thanks for watching and giving your input! 😎🙏🏼
@@orionsires totally agree about, money makes the world go around. The thing I didn’t mention…. It’s easy for me to say he’s a hypocrite. When I’m not the one getting paid. Some people are saying these offers could reach well into the 6 figures. If that’s true. That’s a life changing figure for most people.
I think a more specific topic that is a direvative of this behavior in the community that devolves into gatekeeping and criticism stems from the early foundation of the hobby being very much of a boys club mentality. If you don't fit a popular idea of what you should be doing in the hobby then you're ousted and looked down upon. even early 90's commercials reflect that behavior. I'm making a video essay about that phenomena actually and how women we're turned off from the franchise as whole until pokemon go changed that. tldr this stems from the 90s-2000's from school yard behavior that pokemon was built around.
This is an AWESOME comment that makes me really think about this topic and how it applies to the hobby as a whole. I think you’ve hit the nail on something big here. Gatekeeping, criticism and boys club. Taking notes because I think that’s a video topic right there my friend. 😎
Its all about the money and thats the problem. If youre in this hobby as some youtuber and then you specifically take advantage of your followers you built up to extract monetary gain from them, ur a pos. Plain and simple.
I hear you and I can tell you’re very firm on that point but maybe the followers enjoy it ? Playing devils advocate I know people are pissed but I try and see different perspectives beyond the hypocrisy and negativity. I appreciate your input 😎🙏🏼
@@orionsiresof course a druggies likes drugs lol. But even beyond that, lets say i like a youtuber and they go to whatnot/drip/w.e and stream. Even if im only going to the site for that person, it still brings me to the site and exposes me to that environment. Its bad news. We also live an age where youtubing is a job and people actually donate on patreon. As a man from the early youtube times, youtube isnt about the money, its about the passion to make videos and share what u wanted to share for no monetary gain. Same with pokemon. My point being, In my mind, this is a case of a fool and thier money are easily parted but it could just be my old mind. Maybe people like being given the opportunity to throw money online people. And maybe they simply dont care if theyre put into bad environments. Cant save everyone not everyone needs saving 🤷🏻♂️
Awesome conversation again, always appreciate your content because you don’t care to do all these click bait things or follow the money trends, you do it for your own collection and what you like. I’m on the same boat as you with 151, going to take some of my extra slabs to try and trade for another sealed case of the UPCs. I also managed to get the complete Charizard evo line in sequential PSA 10 which I’m super stoked about, I’ll have to share that in the discord once I pick it up!
Definitely meant to say that but my Brian farted- you aren’t the first nor the last to point that out - I also added that I made a mistake in my description but thanks for catching that, I do make mistakes 😎
This is the 4th comment regarding the name swap. You guys really can’t let something small slide huh I even put into the description I name swapped 😂🤷🏻♀️
My brother got me on whatnot and I was credited $20. I used it on some auctions and only had to pay for shipping. That being said, I found too many instances where junk slabs were mixed in with good slabs in the auctions. The hook is the high speed auctioning, flashing a card and speaking like a "hypeman" or satirical DJ, then giving them 5 secs to make a FOMO based decision. I had to ween my brother off that, because he and maybe plenty of other people barely realize the value of what they are getting, and just keep sliding the yellow button. Then I sat down with him and went over the weird pricing i.e. $350 1st ed fossil pack. It was just out the box, not heavy, not psa graded (which I still don't know why I'd grade a sealed pack or pay $600+ for one). Am I paying for the assumed probability of pulls from a sealed box? Wouldn't it make more sense to put that extra money toward a heavy pack? Maybe you can explain to us the reason for the price discrepancy for box breaks. I do like watching them, but they should charge the price of the box ÷ 36, then shipping. I've seen how much a person makes with 100k+ active subs (people actually viewing and commenting to affect the algorithm). If they just charge $20 over the actual pack value per by-in, that's $720 to sit and break. One tuber (not naming names) is breaking a $7000 box and charging $250 per pack. That's a nice profit and they sell out in days. Look, if the fish are biting, do you blame the fisherman? No...they're in school, they should know better!🧐
Interesting points and thank you for sharing your experience as well as your brother’s it seems that all too often folks get sucked into that style of buying and it’s something they will have to find out the hard way that it’s not so great when you want to sell your stuff. Whatnot needs to be regulated but it’s a service the people want and so the demand is there. Regarding box breaks I disagree with the price per pack being the same across the board, it’s not worth the risk or putting money into for everyone else if you get nothing out of it. Now that being said, for RU-vidrs or streamers or just people who are very well off they can afford to help others out and price per box dividing by 36. Unfortunately there’s probably always going to be some falsehood in the price of the box for the streamer or them saying their price versus what they actually paid. That’s the part that I don’t think people are ever going to get over. Everyone’s in it to make money, it’s obvious now but it’s also a dream job for people who love Pokémon but don’t want to spend their own money breaking a box 😂😎 I get where you are coming from though. I’m just playing devils advocate
@@orionsires You're right. You never know what someone paid for a box. They could have had that booster box in their collection just sitting for 20+ years. Either way, people are hungry for these breakings and don't seem to be slowing down.
I think the main thing with breaks is having the opportunity to get more expensive packs right out of a sealed box instead of trying to get single packs. If you wanted to get some sun and moon packs you’re probably going to have better odds of getting a good hit than a random single pack. Also, you mentioned this in the video as I was typing, you’re theoretically getting a confirmed authentic product. It’s really no different than just buying packs at a store as opposed to singles, you either want to experience a certain set being open or you weigh your odds of getting a big hit. Pricing for breaks should be reasonable, but there are various costs like you said too, breaking some $15,000 vintage box at the exact cost per pack would leave them with a loss overall. When prices are set for 100% profit I think that’s kind of messed up but people also have to do research and decide what’s worth paying. If people buy at ridiculous prices then they will continue to sell at those prices.
Great points I like the idea but it still saddens me to see so many boxes at an alarming rate being opened. It’s more that than anything. The pricing has to be profitable or no one would do it. I will say, if whatnot paid more to people for their time in order to make box breaks market price per pack it would be an absolute game changer. Maybe they are trying to do that to get streamers to lower the pack costs. Great comment thanks for watching 😎🙏🏼
Dude, you got me finished watching 52:41 with 6 cans of beer! And almost spilled out at 24:23😂! Love your thoughts and kindness❤ Just bought 60 booster bundles of 151 few days ago.
I do like how you were able to talk about, who I’m guessing is twicebakejake, and his current downfall without slandering him and completely trashing him. As well as play a bit of a devils advocate, as to what his thought process might be for going to whatnot. I still don’t agree with him but it’s nice to see the unbaised approach.
Thank you! That’s all I was really trying to do was look at things from a different perspective. Just because creators make mistakes or contradict themselves doesn’t make them bad people or justify slandering them. I’m no expert on whatnot and box breaks but it doesn’t seem like it has to be such a bad thing it’s sad people have reported being scammed a lot on that platform. Very unfortunate. I will say I also don’t keep up with many creators too much so I might not know the extent of their mistakes just observing from a distance. Thanks for watching 😎
As long as there are box breaks I never want to hear the knock on sealed collecting. That no one will ever want to buy all this product in the future. People are addicted to watching other people open packs. More and more RU-vidrs are going the way of box breaks
I've done a few box breaks with pokemart usa. Prices are good and he only did a few vintage packs. Was kind of exciting and a community-based thing. If you dont share this hobby IRL with people (you should if you can) then having a virtual community is very wholesome compared to some of the other digital communities, you can join in.
For me, I am fine with sealed vintage boxes being opened. After all it was created to be opened. Say l someone offered to buy you any vintage box..... If you could own any sealed box of Pokemon, regardless of price, what box would it be ?
This is true they were meant to be opened but whenever I look at a sealed box it’s so beautiful and hard to imagine breaking and for me that’s a really tough choice but probably ex deoxys, holon phantoms or Skyridge or maybe legendary collection… too many good choices.. gym challenge also is super underrated 😎
For every top whatnot streamer there are 50 people who are trying to break in with streams on the platform. I personally have gotten exceptional deals on whatnot from singles to sealed products. I have bought from 50+ sellers on whatnot and zero scams. It’s a great place to pick up singles IMO.
Opened ES and 151 this weekend with my son. Out of 109 ES packs we pulled 3 Alt Arts, the Sylveon Vmax, Glaceon Vmax, and the Leafeon Alt Art V. For 151 we finally got the RH Machamp we needed but not much else, still need illustration rare Nidoking and Squirtle, so we are now tied for pulling all but 2 cards in 151! Who now will complete the set via pulling the cards first! You or I! Haha
Hey congrats on all those alt arts !!! Also I feel like you’re much more likely to find squirtle than I am to find the hyper rare mew but I know for fact that Nidoking has been a TOUGH pull 😂
One good thing about box breaks is eventually they’ll be forced to go into less vintage stuff like B&W and XY because if boxes are $500,000 even most normal box break buyers can’t afford $15,000 for a pack or whatever. There’s only so many vintage boxes left and they will run out eventually.
Eventually people have to open whatever is available so yeah it does in some ways affect all walks of the supply but vintage is probably most common still for box breaks that people really want to get in on 😎
I watched MysticRips breakdown an EX Dragon booster box last night on WhatNot. 20,000$ booster box. His average sale on each pack was close to 500$. Overall the profit margin had to be relatively small. What I can say is that it was very awesome to watch vintage EX grails get hit in real-time. Watching the reactions, seeing how happy the buyer is who took a massive risk. Also, you have to remember especially in regards to vintage, the condition is everything and a box break is the most pack fresh you're gonna get. I love the idea, but I do fear the idea of these booster boxes going extinct, and that's absolutely inevitable at this point. As far as 151 goes, I think the real winners of this era in Pokemon are gonna be the ones who went full throttle on 151 sealed, japaense or english, any product from this set is just gold. I still cringe at the fact I didn't buy more poster collections when they were just 15$ a piece! And Zapdos boxes were once at 17$! It will be massive.
Absolutely agree with the excitement of box breaks and seeing someone take that risk and it pay off that’s inevitably going to be the thing that pumps this activity BUT yes the boxes will cease to exist, current collectors of them will benefit, high earning collectors will benefit and the box breakers who already own these products will benefit inflating their own values even more. It’s not good news for us little guys who have yet to even go after one sealed box. I have a concern that box breaks will keep me from every getting one reasonably priced but there still time! 😎😂
Great vid, like how you packed multiple subjects into one. I bet you a lot of people will watch this one. All I have to add is if a box turns out resealed, I assume the breaker will take the loss and refund. And at my target there is constantly entire fresh shelf of 151 etbs and premiums. At $55 etb (MSRP)? And my LGS has probably 20+ stack of Snorlax promos from opening them. It doesn’t seem “rare” in any way. I opened champions path and 1 pack of shining fates but I opened zero hidden fates, celebrations, 151, Go, and whatever other specialty sets since.
Thanks for watching bro but you ARE missing out on 151 IMO it’s such a fun set. Yeah I guess worst case the breaker calls the stream off and has to deal with filing their own return to original seller. Huge risk buying and break stuff like vintage IMO but I do envy those people opening big boxes and they know they pissed people off joining whatnot but can you blame them? Incentives? Opening vintage boxes? It’s a dream come true for content creators who thrive in this space. 🤷🏻♀️
@@orionsires the guy whose been breaking the longest on Yt, thecardconomist, has his own trusted suppliers and he cares a lot about his rep. But he does it all through PayPal, if whatnot makes it easer for Jake then thats great. Tcc has years of experience and he stays up all night breaking and works every day VERY hard. U should take a peek at his business. I stopped gambling poke and im collecting vintage lego Harry Potter rn (brand new). I want to open a P fates, but if I was I would buy the top cards and then open a little. or buy Lots of bulk ultras/spare cards. So much gets wasted on product that could reduce the cost of the chase card.
@@orionsires The thing I don’t like is that they’re not entire display cases sealed but like 30 different individual 6 pack bundles. But the Paldean Fates tin display boxes fit 10 of them pretty well. The sealed 151 bundle cases though just look so cool.
Also on top of 151 talk, from opening up over 80 bbs from opening day till now pull rates have gotten worse, so beinf that your dispaly is from release i would say it makes it more valuabke or will in the future being 1st print.
@orionsires I hope it was just a bad batch. Like I was saying hyper rare cards I have like r of each so maybe I was lucky, but that damn squirtle and Nidoking haha
@@austinreed.seems like the UPCs had monster hits. Opened 10 of them and hit 3 Zards. Also opened an opening day case of ETBs. Hit tons of SIRs as well. Opened 6 ETBs recently and seems tough to hit SIRs, I got one Alakazam but that was really the only big hit.
@orionsires yeah and you won't find any in store. Especially for target and BB. It will only be in their website. Both limit three so order for you and Dyanna. Haha
