Since Amber mentioned girl bands and the 90s, you guys gotta do a reaction to the Spice Girls sometime. Though when I hear "band", I think more of the likes of The Bangles who actually played instruments.
You definitely need to put Donna Summer on your female Friday list. She Works Hard for the Money, Last Dance, Hot Stuff, and On the Radio just to name a few.
Why not start with the song that put her on the charts? Love to Love You Baby. For another great Diva from that era (Early 70s disco) Gloria Gaynor I Will Survive, Never Can Say Goodbye, Honey Bee, and Do It Yourself.
I love the Pointer Sisters (June, Ruth, and Anita... June is the lead vocalist here)! They were THE Sistah Trio back in the 70s and 80s! You should check out "How Long", "Fire", "Slow Hand", "He's So Shy", "Automatic", "Neutron Dance", and, of course, "I'm So Excited". And yes the "(For My Love)" subtitle was added so people wouldn't confuse it with the Van Halen song (which was only released as a single four months prior). Sadly, we lost June to breast cancer in 2006 at the age of 52, but her legacy lives on. :)
The Pointer Sisters were raised in a pretty strict religious family their father was a Baptist minister (I believe) but definitely a minister. I always wondered back then how he felt about his girls singing their sexy songs!!🤷♀️😆 Their songs were kinda sexy for the 70's...when they started!!💜
As a kid I was in love when I saw this video. They were so beautiful. And this song and video is so awesome..So 80s..Love it. You have to do "Fire" by them.
I'm glad they had a hit with this but I never considered it one of their better songs, it's so poppy and lightweight. My favorites of theirs include "Dare Me", "Gold Mine", "Freedom", "I Need You"
If You are not yet familiar with the movie "Love Actually", I urge You to watch it. This song has a memorable part in that movie, and the movie is imho, the best ever description of what love actually means, and it does it without being a melodramatic piece that no man would ever watch voluntarily. Quite the contrary, I have never met anybody who had not enjoyed watching it..
The Pointer Sisters are from Oakland, CA which is where I live. React to their songs He's So Shy, Fire, Slow Hand, I'm So Excited, Automatic and Neutron Dance please.
Glad you appreciate the track and field shots in the video. It was released the year of the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, so that's why shots were interspersed in the video. The 70's and 80's belonged to these ladies. So amazing. And thrilled you've heard and appreciated them
The Pointer Sisters were a really popular group with many hit songs. They should never be forgotten! In the '80s their music was great to dance to. Listening to this sure takes me back
Jump was released in '84 and was tied in heavily to the 1984 Summer Olympics. The pointer Sisters started as a foursome, an sang everything soul, pop, r&b rock, country even! All the sisters could sing and the sound amazing together. This song and album (Breakout) came at their peak in the mid 80's, but they have an amazing catalog!
I agree, The Pointers have a lot of versatility in their catalogue. I love their country hit Fairytale. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tQWgKvvbT1g.html
Sorry I disagree The Pointer Sisters were by far a much better group than Destiny's Child. The Sisters had way more better music and were a cohesive unit unlike Destiny's Child. JMO though
@@chrismadden132 I agree they were much better. I'm just saying their popularity was comparable for their time. They were hella talented especially their jazz and vocalese era in the 70s. That's why I also listed the five or six other genres of music they were able to sing
I laughed when you mentioned the Van Halen song, “Jump.” In the 1985 movie Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (required viewing for most girls at slumber parties in the 80s), a TV presenter jokes “tune in tomorrow when we sneak preview 7 more songs titled “Jump!” Both the Van Halen and Pointer Sisters songs were popular in 1983 and 1984, and the videos were on MTV constantly, especially Van Halen, so it did feel like you were constantly being told to jump. Then the jumping craze cooled down until 1992 when Kriss Kross made us Jump and House of Pain made us Jump Around. 😆
I feel like pretty soon you will need to do a “do over reaction” of USA for Africa you will probably recognize many more artists now since you have seen individual songs from artists you didn’t know before. Kenny Rogers, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon (of Simon & Garfunkel) Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, The Pointer sisters (although they didn’t do solos they were in the chorus) Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) just to name a few.. If you pause the intro you will recognize many more signatures now.
That's actually a really cool idea. They should have a full list of the artists from "We Are The World" and once they've watched the majority of them they should go back and rewatch!
Yes!! During the "USA for Africa" video they mentioned that they need to learn all those people/bands names. I don't think they realized that they just checked off another one.
These girls were simply amazing. They had (13) top 20 US hits. A cool side note their brother Aaron played major league baseball, and then was an NFL official.
Their harmonies were so tight because (much like the BeeGees) they are/were real family. Definitely worth checking out their earlier stuff. Highly suggest you listen "Yes We Can Can"... their first hit. RIP June Pointer. RIP Bonnie Pointer.
If you want violins and sax in one song along with beautiful vocals, you need to listen to INXS- Never Tear us Apart. The song is one of their best and been recommended a ton of times so far. You will see it one of these days :)
Pointer Sisters were HUGE. They were Jazz, Country, Pop, R&B and Dance. They have a great string of successful and chart topping tracks. From 70’s and 80’s.
Such an awesome Pointer Sisters song!! My fav of theirs!! This was a HUGE hit in 1984/85! It won the 1985 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. They were the first black female singing group to play at the Grand Ole Opry (in the 70's). RIP Anita, Bonnie and June Pointer... (Ruth is the only living Pointer Sister.)
Just a few Girl Bands - 1937 - The Andrew Sisters sing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" 1957 - Martha and the Vandellas sing "Dancing In The Street" and "Heatwave" 1957 - The Shirelles sing "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", "Soldier Boy" and Dedicated To The One I Love" 1959 - The Supremes sing "Stop In The Name Of Love", "Baby Love" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" 1979 - Bananarama sing "Venus" (remake) and "Cruel Summer" 1981 - The Bangles sing "Walk Like An Egyptian", "Manic Monday" and "Eternal Flame"
You're pretty accurate on the others, but WAY off on The Supremes. Baby Love came out in 1964, Stop In the Name of Love 1965, Keep Me Hangin' On - 1986.
Bonnie, Anita & June “The Pointer Sisters” Out of Oakland,CA. They were from the “Disco Era” mid to late 70’s. Daughters of a Minister, they sang in the Church Choir. I was lucky enough to be in Oakland one day and stop in a Cajun Joint (International Ave & High St.) and sat next to them w/o knowing it. 5 minutes later I realized who they were. We spent the next 45 minutes to an hour just talking music and lyrics. They were like I was talking to my Cousins or my Aunts, sooo down Home. BTW we ordered Gumbo, Etouffee’, Hush Puppies, Red Beans & Rice washed down with a beer for me, Sweet Tea for them ( they don’t drink). Good pick Amber, gotta go back for more “Neutron Dance”, I’m So Excited”, “Yes we Can Can”, “Fire” PS there’s a Fourth Sister and she was on the earlier hits, but I don’t remember her name?.. SanJoséBob
Please react to Roberta Flack's song "Killing Me Softly (With His Song)." Younger people are probably more familiar with the cover by The Fugees, but please check out Roberta Flack's version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dx1XtKbEtfE.html Roberta wasn't the original artist but her version was the first to make it a hit. Per Wikipedia about the song: "The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972, but it did not chart." Don McLean sang "Vincent" and "American Pie."
@@bigsteveiii9893 I know they did. Just reminding them which one Don McLean was. (Sometimes they react to people multiple times and don't fully remember the previous songs.)
The Pointer Sisters , Ruth, Anita, June and Bonnie were one of the most successful groups in music history , having 13 top 20 pop hits from 1973 to 1985, they started with 4 sisters, then later Bonnie Pointer went solo, so that’s why you see 3 sisters. Fun fact, when you watch the We Are The World video all 3 sisters are their singing and you can distinctively hear them , they were and are that good. My favorite song by them is Automatic.
Yes definitely i can hear their distinct voice texture in the group singing part ❤ way back when it was released. Thank God , i thought I'm d only one who noticed that 😅
The Pointer Sisters are definitely 80's. & they are actually sisters (daughters of a preacher) Other songs of theirs to check out - "I'm So Excited", "Slow Hand", "Fire" "Fairytale" & "Yes We Can".
I'm so sick of people playing the same song on every channel. Must be the same people flooding every reaction channel on YT 🙄And that song isn't the only one (no pun intended). It's just about every artist that's been recommended to every reaction channel there is. They must be on YT 24 / 7 to be able to do it.Melissa Etheridge has so many good songs (and some even better than The Only One) that's worth showing to everybody.
The Pointer Sisters have so many amazing songs, check out I'm So Excited, Neutron Dance, Automatic, Fire, He's So Shy, Slow Hand, Dare Me...keeps going.
Another Pointer Sisters hit you might like to react to is "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)" from 1975, when all 4 sisters were still in the group. One of their best. Very funky, and not quite as slick as their 80's stuff.
This song was featured in the movie Beverly Hills Cop. The suggestions already given are fabulous. Slow Hand is a classic. If you like crooners, have a listen to Johnny Mathis or Tony Bennett. Female artists cannot be complete without Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, or Dinah Washington or the very best -Miss Billie Holiday. Thanks for the music and the blessings.
" Slow Hand " is another good one. Another girl group for Female Friday Is EnVouge. Or Solo artist Toni Braxton and Anita Baker. Oh, and Jane Child " I Don't Want To Fall In Love ".
"If you want to taste my kisses in 5he night" What a lyric! Incredible vocalists. Everyone loved these ladies back then. They even won a grammy for best Country vocal performance, there was just something magical about three lovely mature ladies, expressing very tasteful sensuality through their incredible musical talent and charism Try "I'm So Excited" "Fire" "He's So Shy" and "Slow hand"
They had a string of hits in the late 70’s and 80’s. They even had a jazz tinged song in the 70’s called “Yes We Can Can”, which is really good. I think they were originally a gospel group, and they did some work with the delta blues singer Taj Mahal. Try their song “He’s So Shy”, it sounds like a song from the early 1960’s.
In this video, there are a couple of visuals that I appreciate. First, all three of them are wearing black dresses, but each has it own pattern so each is unique. Second, their body movements are tasteful and fun, . Sometimes they jump straight up, sometimes kick forward, sometimes swish the skirts (is that what you call it on a dress?), but never revealing or crass (like many artists since then). These three sisters are not only women, but LADIES in the best sense. Also, another vote for "He's So Shy." I understand that the writer of the song had in mind the girl groups of the 60s (Artie, you're correct). It's sweet and bouncy, and even the lyrics make us think of the 60s.
They are the FIRST African-American women to be allowed to perform at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville, TN. Their father was a Preacher, so they learned to sing in the church choir. Their brother is a school teacher. When Neutron Dance was released, the lead’s voice is so deep, no one believed it was a woman. THAT’s some range!!
The Pointer Sisters were another favorite of mine in the 80s. Just about every song they recorded was worth listening to. They were quality vocalists and had pretty decent production teams as they always had a great sound, decent song choices, and good instrumentals backing them up. I've always loved this song, and it was great to see you react to it. Keep having fun with your reactions.
Absolutely LOVE The Pointer Sisters, this album came out while Disco was still happening, and this was music you could really dance to. So happy you played this tune, made my Friday! Thank you
I like "Automatic" and "Neutron Dance" from the same album more. They're more interesting musically to me. This is a great song but it's pretty straightforward. The Pointer Sisters have released 15 albums in 20 years, 1973-1993. They were backup singers for a lot of great musicians before releasing their own albums.
Great reaction. You’ve had some stellar choices. Please try Judy Garland, The Man That Got Away from the movie A Star is Born. Consider her a female crooner. 😉
A Rare talent. Coming out of Vaudeville and going into the studio star system, she had the skills. Dancer, actress, singer, etc. Few have ever equaled her talent. Her voice was hurt later in career, from drugs, over use, etc. I adore Judy. She was also VERY funny. RIP
Anita Pointer did a duet with country singer Earl Thomas Conley called "Too Many Times". Earl had almost 20 #1 hits in the 1980s but died in relative obscurity in 2019. Earl & Anita performed the song on Soul Train, and he is the only country music artist to ever appear on that program. You should react to a few of his songs ("Holding Her & Loving You" was nominated for multiple Grammys in 1983)
An even better Pointer Sisters tune is Fire, a Springsteen cover. Apparently Springsteen wrote Fire with Elvis in mind, but the King never got to it. Meanwhile, the Pointer Sisters changed the gender pov of the song and had a massive hit.
My favorite day! I love Female Friday ❤️ Such good music. I suggest a little something different, like “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt. Gets ya in the feels
Pointer Sisters Jump... a heavy cardio in Jazzercise in the '80s! Among others of their songs. Yes, I'm old. Love this song. It was also part of the Love Actually movie soundtrack (great Christmas movie but not for children). You all really took me back. Great reaction. Thank you!!
The Pointer Sisters are incredible. You have to explore more of their music. I'm so Excited is off the hook good! They had so many great songs he like this! Music legends.
For something different for female Friday, might I suggest Postmodern Jukebox featuring Haley Reinhart doing a cover of Radiohead’s Creep. It has all you love. Piano, Horns, great range, growl and a little scat. A little New Orleans vibe with a 40’s flare. You won’t be disappointed.
I was just turned onto them. I love how the take a song from one genre and decade then perform it in a completely different genre and era. Absolutely the coolest thing I've heard in a while.
I requested ithis a while back. We just have to keep posting it to get on the list. There are so many for Amber to get through. But I'm willing to wait. ;)
Pure Energy!!! Love this so much. Another hit is automatic. Ruth Pointer did the leading voice… and she has an amazing deep voice. Like your reaction ❤️
Something way before your time would be the girl group " The Weather Girls'. You must have heard a song by them!? "Its Raining Men". So fun and ironic for me lol. Hallelujah 😁
The Pointer Sisters is an American R&B singing group from Oakland, California, that achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s. Their repertoire has included such diverse genres as pop, disco, jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country, and rock. Wikipedia
I grew up on the Pointer Sisters and Kool and the Gang! My mom loved the Pointer Sisters so much that their music was always playing! I got a music education growing up because my mom had such good taste in music. Pointer Sisters are definitely my favorite all female group, period!
These women made the 80's totally fun. Went dancing downtown Seattle that decade. I had the time of my life. Thank you R&S for bringing back the memories.
Gotta listen to Yes We Can Can, one of their earliest hits…and you must hear their version of Springsteen’s song, Fire, and Slow Hand is another great one.from the sisters…other good Pointer tunes are He’s So Shy, I’m So Excited, Actually, they have been around since 1970, but this was in the ‘80s I do believe…Bonnie and June Pointer have passed, Anita Pointer has retired due to health problems, but Ruth still performs with her daughter, Issa and granddaughter, Sadako..
The Sisters were very smart. They possess a sharp business acumen and stayed loyal to their fans and their main producer. Their producer, Richard Perry, grew and evolved with the Sisters - keeping his sound and the Sisters relevant. I was always fascinated to see where their love of their career takes them
You guys NEED to react to Frankie Valli's "Can't take my eyes off you" but please make sure it's not the first video in the search feed because it's not Frankie, the original version is uploaded by the channel "RHINO"
I first saw the Pointer Sisters on "The Carol Burnett Show" back in the early 70s. They seemed like a novelty act, but talented. I was glad to see them break out with some more commercial music like the song you covered, because based on what I saw on the Carol Burnett Show, it didn't look like they were going to have much success. (FWIW, those shows are on YT, so you can search for them and watch them, and make up your own mind.)
Female Friday suggestions Solo artists: Billie Holiday Roberta Flack Dusty Springfield Nina Simone Selena Quintanilla KT Tunstall Lorde Motown groups: The Supremes The Marvelettes Martha and the Vandellas Bands with guitars: 10,000 Maniacs Garbage The Bangles The Pretenders
Any list of recommended solo female artists HAS to include Aretha Franklin, Eydie Gorme, Barbra Streisand, Nancy Wilson (jazz singer, NOT from Heart) & Sarah Vaughn!!!
Neutron Dance is a great song that they did for the movie Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy! They were around since the 70s and had hits in the 80s also. I would love to see your guys react to some early 80s popular club hits like "Meeting in the Ladies Room" by Klymaxx or "White Lines" by Grand Master Flash!!
Please react to Selena (Y Los Dinos) “Disco Medley” from their last concert at The Astrodome in 95. It’s been 26 years and she is still such a powerful force! 😢The complete and total package ❤️
