Sorry, one thing: Amelia Bloomer was reacting to the many layers of petticoats that made dresses very heavy and restrictive. The cage crinoline was an innovation in womenswear which made it possible to wear the fashionable silhouette while allowing women much more freedom of movement, as well as allowing skirts to become so big that they practically enforced a personal space bubble around the wearer-- both reasons why it was relentlessly satirised in comics like the ones you show. It hadn't been invented at this point in history. Amelia Bloomer actually went back to wearing skirts after the invention of the cage crinoline, since it had essentially solved the problem she was protesting.

@@gremlita I loved your video though 😊 I think the research waters on this subject are really muddied by the prevalence of old timey men's bad takes, lol. I totally used to think from the comics and secondary sources that women in cage crinolines were 24/7 bumping into doors and upturning like knocked lampshades! It makes a lot more sense in context, that those men had an agenda in portraying these women as ridiculous.

I feel like we also need to talk about how people associate men wearing dresses with who they are attracted to and feel the need to assume or overly speculate about someone's private life. (i.e: BTS Jimin who often wears women's clothing) I've seen it countless times; a man wears a dress and suddenly people begin to speculate his sexuality when really - it CAN be just a form of self expression. If it's not confirmed by said person, just let them be. Clothing choices =/= Sexual orientation.

This was a major hurdle in my early days of non conformity. I have always preferred leggings to jeans, worn with a long shirt of some sort worn in a tunic fashion. I was often confused with being into men...simply based on my attire. Over the years I have expanded my wardrobe to include dresses and skirts, heels, and hose....and NOT to be accepted as a woman. I just prefer so called feminine looks, and in the subculture I am in, androgyny is a big part...so bonus. But even in this day and age a fellow that does as myself is either "trans in denial" or gay. I really and truly wish more straight men just threw out the gender rules and started sporting such styles (tastefully), so that this absurd and sexist notion could be put to rest.

He's 17 and a proper manly dude, goes to the gym (in his kilt, when he feels like it) and then to the pub, again, a proper dude bro guy. He sketched out a dress that he wants me to make him for Christmas and ya, I'm working on it. We went to pick out some linens and and silks and ribbons for it before the last lockdown and I've been hand stitching it and tailoring it for him the whole month of lockdown and he loves it. @Eli7owls
@Eli7owls 3 года назад
I think it’s that Harry Styles has a different type of persona. Billy Porter is known as a “gay icon” and people expect it from him because to be gay is already considered to be “feminine” in our society (which is silly in itself but a whole other conversation topic.) But when a well known heartthrob amongst women wears a dress it threatens their carefully planned “masculinity.” If this guy can wear dresses and frills and women still love him than what have they been doing their whole lives?

And could constitute as harassment if not careful.. And more importantly an honest question here while I know OP taking ‘being feminine is an insult’ angle, do women really think men wearing skirt is sexy? Coz looking sexually desirable is no 1 reason for men clothing imo. And wearing dress seems like another unnecessary barrier going against us (reminded me of Barney in HIMYM take a challenge wearing farmers attire while pick up girls at bar) It’s easy to imagine Greek gods doing it, but try imagine the usual bald middle aged men in Greek dress..

Men are men, regardless of presentation. Not all dysphoria comes across the same way because each trans person has a different end goal with transitioning. I am saying this as a masculine and androgynous trans person.

It's very similar for me. I'm a genderfluid trans guy, and usually fluctuate between somewhere in the middle of the spectrum and pretty definitively male. My body and face are pretty androgynous, when I wear masculine clothes I feel like my features and stature are too feminine and like I look more like a tomboy than a man, while when I'm dressed in a more feminine way, my masculine features stand out more and I feel like I look more like a man. So, since I feel at least to a certain extent like a man and not at all like a woman, I'd rather look like a man in a dress than a woman in a suit, if that makes sense.

Yes I think so too. Also, it'll be great if the fahsion industry can create unisex clothing that any person regardless of their genetilia can wear. But for male person's who don't have a feminine shape etc I think the dress, skirt or so called 'feminine clothing' needs to be able to fit their shape. Most men don't have that androgenous shape (especially their hips aren't wide, their chest a bit buff) so getting them to wear a dress shaped as a ususal female shape wouldn't be a good look on them. Although, a dress/ skirt/crop tops can be made to look good for them. In ancient times, men would wear robes like dresses and they looked great in them. For me what harry wore doesn't really suit him but that's my opinion. I think a dress that complimented his shape and skin colour so maybe a light blue loose dress would have been a better choice and one that's not too bulky looking haha PS: Just saying my opinions, I mean no offence ^^

Doesn't matter the color or the adornments it has. Male clothing is measured, designed, and styled to how the male body is naturally and the masculinity of it. But more than that still today whether from homophobia or transphobia AMAB (assigned male at birth) who are dressed femininely are beaten up, sometimes quite severly. I would argue that gender nonconforming men still face significant oppression in many ways (including in the United States). I can't tell you how many times I've read stories of guys on Reddit describing how terrified they are of just leaving the house dressing feminine. Constantly fearing harassment and violence to me is effectively comparable to it being illegal. Yet the author makes it seem as if men can just wear whatever they want, since crossdressing is no longer a crime.

to provide some new perspective, in a western view once clothes became “gendered”, people going against that were trans people and drag queens who were killed for doing so. as a trans female, it kind of makes me uncomfy to see cis white men taking credit for a lot of the fighting poc trans women and drag queens had to do. this is not to say that men wearing dresses in magazine covers isn’t a feat in obstructing gender norms, but only to give context to the voices of the unsung who have died for something that a cis straight white man was seen as heroic for. i think culturally there are so many different nations that wore “feminine” things from a western lens so in that sense it doesn’t make sense just like this video suggests. just another perspective y’all pls don’t attack me ❤️

In fairness, I don't see much publicity being given to cis white men for crossdressing. Harry Styles is one of the first to even get any significant fanfare which merely showcases just how far behind we still are. There are definitely plenty of cis white males that struggle every single day having to suppress their femininity. It's also worth noting that two of the most famous crossdressing male celebrities in the world are actually black: Billy Porter and RuPaul.

As a trans man who's really into fashion, I hate the stigma of "you have to dress a certain way to represent your gender", I enjoy my "effeminate" clothes, but because people who know I'm trans judge me REAL bad, I often go out trying to dress as masculine as THEY expect me dress like simply to avoid the bad looks and muttering behind my back and/or in front of me. Most stupid question I got was "so you like blue more than pink now, right?" my favorite color is green, but no, I actually still like pink more in clothes, weird, testosterone didn't change how I view colors=gender🙃

I’m a trans guy and I’ve always hated dresses on myself because I thought it made me look like a girl because of how much dresses have been tied to being feminine. I always tell myself, I hope one day, I’ll be able to wear a skirt or dress and still be seen as a man.

I first discovered your channel by watching your piece about Over the Garden Wall. I was so impressed and inspired by you!! A few weeks ago with all the Harry stuff going on I was wondering if you would do a history about men historically wearing skirts/dresses, but instead I went ahead and did my own research, which is funny because you definitely influenced me to think critically about fashion and culture!! I think what you're doing is super cool. Thank you so much!

@@chadeller4541 I’m a cis woman, if that’s what you’re asking. If it’s not your personal preference to date a guy who is comfortable wearing dresses, that’s fine. For me, I just don’t care either way. I’m mainly attracted to masculinity in men and women and wearing an item of clothing doesn’t take away their masculinity to me. Harry Styles, for example, is very attractive to me and he is comfortable wearing feminine things like dresses and I still see him as very masculine. He’s even more attractive because he’s comfortable expressing his true self through fashion and doesn’t buy into all the labels that come with his gender expression. He’s just a man who enjoys wearing pink sparkly outfits and wore a dress in a magazine to prove that it’s not a big deal. He also is comfortable embracing his feminine side (because everyone has a masculine & feminine side).

Yeah, it’s especially hard for us trans people. A lot of people tell you to start dressing like your “real gender” which can mean that they don’t believe in trans people and we should dress based on our genitals, or they think you have to dress in a stereotypically masculine/feminine way to be that gender (which still implies that clothing is based off of genitalia.) Both of those are terribly wrong. You can be a trans woman and dress masculine, or be a trans man and dress feminine, etc... I still like dresses even though I’m a trans guy, but I’m not going to let those stereotypes stop me from liking something. Let’s all just all make clothing less gendered and be happy. 👍👍
@sorcerykid
@sorcerykid Год назад
Shouldn't the real solution be to just let people wear whatever they want rather than making clothing less gendered? After all many trans people actually get euphoria wearing feminine or masculine coded garments. And in the end, the real problem is society enforcing binary gender stereotypes, not whether clothing is masculine or feminine.

It’s probably better to embrace your baby’s gender instead of trying to shove it into a cabinet. Let them be who they are when they are older but, ignoring a babies gender is something that I don’t think should be done. I respect your opinions tho. What you want to do with your own life is your choice. Just sharing my opinions. Have a great day!
@danielconnor8516
@danielconnor8516 3 года назад
@@gabby5018 I dont think we are trying to shove the child's gender in the closet. If a child ask if they are a boy or a girl, I will answer them honestly. This is more of "I will treat both gender as the same". Like ok sure a boy and a girl can play with barbies. A boy and a girl can play construction together. A boy and a girl can roughhouse. A boy and a girl can wear frilly clothes or utilitarian clothes. Personally I would want to dress my child as either, but mostly gender neutral. If my child wants to wear something, sure why not as long as it is aproppriate.
