Great video on ridding the yard of an ant mound, but as you mention in the video, the ants will end up fleeing this mound and setting up another one nearby. They will also likely carry the surviving larvae to the new mound site. So how do you prevent the ants from just moving to another mound? Here is something to try: When you set up your plastic bag on top of the ant bed, spread a healthy layer of diatomaceous earth just outside the perimeter of the plastic bag. (About a six-inch border outside the edge of the plastic directly on the grass should be good--or you could cover the entire area covered by the bag underneath the bag as well) The ants will cross this hazard as they flee the mound, and become covered with the DE. The larvae they are carrying will also be covered and both worker ants and larvae will become dessicated and die from the effects of the DE. The only caveat is that the ground cannot be wet for this to work. This method is non-toxic, easy, and effective, and makes a great complement to the technique you are showing here, which is already very effective at driving out the ants. We want to completely rid ourselves of these ants, and the two methods combined here will ensure that the ant population is decimated. Try it out and give me a reply on this comment thread!
The most fascinating part to me is that no new ants move into that spot. I'd wager the chemical trails they use to communicate probably read to new ants looking to inhabit the area the way a devastated city covered in warning posters and huge spray painted messages like "EVERYONE DYING, FLEE FOR YOUR LIVES!" would look to us. I see that and I'm moving on to greener pastures, quickly, while looking over my shoulder.
@@horrido666 I like this comment, speculating on how another species perceives the world. What did I say that was in error? What did you add to the conversation? At the minimum, you lack tact.

I'm amazed at how much material those little guys can move around. Will try this method! My friend does this to control weeds in the bare areas around his garden but it takes a while longer than three days to cook those weeds.
You handled that like an Aussie! Quick, Clear and to the Point! Great stuff buddy! I'll be using that around our property here in South Australia! Hurrah!!! Out
Thanks for the video, I am a senior citizen and seen video where you could use dawn soap and water to get rid of them but now since watching your video I want have to waste my dawn soap on them and now I learned from your video to use a trash bag instead, that I can use again. God Bless and I do appreciate you making the video.
Those ants remind me of pulling guard duty at the motor pool at Fort Bliss. They'd give us an axe handle as a weapon, and we'd have to walk around the outside of the motor pools. You'd find these ant nests, and I'd sit there with the axe handle and REALLY piss them off.
😉 Thanks for the info! I just stepped into a bran new new ant hill with both feet, in my sandals! They got me about 10-15 bites on each foot and between my toes. I'm definitely going to try this!!
Pretty uninformed answer: I understand that "chimes" are carefully dug for regulation of temperature and CO2 levels (ventilation). Doing this maybe also affects some other aspects about how livable the place is deep down.
As an Aussie, I needed subtitles because I couldn't understand a word of what you said. All I heard was "neowifurgurnafainaintsinyayerdyergurnahayvtuhgutruddivem"
As a German, this guy is very easy to understand. Don't know what your problem is considering he's talking your mother tongue. It's weird. Scots have the worst accent.
@@lynth I actually have trouble with Dublin Irish accents. Not sure why, I can understand Scots fine, but have immense difficulty understanding the thick Irish accent.
As also an Aussie, I had no trouble at all understanding the guy in the video, because I'm not a cunt with no world experience outside of bogan central of my local city.
I was looking for a non cruel way to get rid of ants. This is great advice thank you. I'll probably add some repellents around the garden so they don't colonize somewhere close again
I'd love to have seen this done with a thermometer probe inserted deeper into the nest to see how the temps are underground (do they sit higher or lower than what is immediately under the plastic? (either way, I'm going to be trying this in the spring when it warms back up).
The easiest way to get rid of ants (without killing them which is unnecessary) is to pour white vinegar over the nest. Do this 2-3 times within an hour or two and they will move the queen. Ants gone.
@@larsonfamilyhouse Keep them away or kill them? Keep them away is with a white line of chalk. They won't cross a white line. Or with cinnamon. They don't like the smell.
I've done something similar with a twist. Smaller plastic over the entry with dry ice directly over the hole - the carbon dioxide flows down into their nest and they're dead in a couple of hours or less. Bagging a hornet's nest & dry ice, works the same - only ya gotta be quick, the critters are short tempered.
I would guess the black plastic would make it over 150 if normal temps are 115. Maybe add boiling water first? I'm going to try this here in Texas and see how hot I can get it!
Yes but that method can be dangerous if the hot water gets sloshed onto a human body part. I have used boiling water and it definitely does work but however, where I used that method, it also killed the grass :( I'm hoping the "heat them out" option in the video will be a safer alternative and maybe it will only damage the grass, allowing the grass to recover.
That method may work where you are, but won’t work in most other places because typically ant colonies go 2 to 5 feet into the earth. The best way to rid yourself of ants is to use Borax, or more commonly the diatomaceous Earth method.
I tried this method on 6 or 7 ant hills as directed. After a week in southern AZ with temperatures over 1000, the ants were still very active. Maybe I had the wrong kind of black plastic bags.
Could you please do an experiment where you make pure oxygen atmosphere while trying to raise an insect within it please please please!! The reason for this is because apparently it doubles in size. Would love to see that!! Thanks bro❤
I have ants but no anthill! Help! How do I get rid of them if there are no anthills? They are all over my yard! And my yard has become so uneven! HELP!
You can use granules to kill them. Different companies make differt kinds, but they all work the same. Place them where you see them and they take the granules in as food. It will kill them.
Fire ants are attracted to mild weather. It the bed is hotter than somewhere else nearby, the will up and leave, especially to save the larvae. That is why there wasn't any after i removed the plastic. Not sure where they went, but they aren't here.
No. You can see this is the only bed in my yard. I get them about every 2 weeks, but I do this and I don't see them anymore. I haven't a clue where they go.
@@3BricksHigher Well I'm testing the theory on my nests with pond liner and bricks. Might even be sunlight or access to the surface they need for foraging. I'm guessing the root system below ground level has a certain amount of oxygen thinking about it, otherwise the grass wouldn't grow, as plants need oxygen in their roots.
As you can see in the vid, this lone bed was the only one in my yard. After I 'treated' this one, I didn't see another for 2 weeks. Then I repeated. I hate bugs lol I get rid of them as soon as I see em.
I guess this wont work if you have ants EVERYWHERE in your yard ? Im so desperate the ant killer grabuels arent doing anything!! Im ready to cover my whole large yard in plastic bags !!!!😂
😂 there are chemicals that can be used in a pull behind sprayer thar would help. It would make your yard a place ants would not want to be. It's just up to you if you want to use chemicals.
@@3BricksHigher I'm fine using chemicals - I can't see what's bad about it ? I don't know alot about yards ! I would just have to keep my cat inside ! Yes I tried the sprayer around the perimeter and there's still tons of hills. Only in the dry patches of the yard....not where shade hits. I think we (my parents live with me) need to try to regrow the grass ? My next move is to pour the granules all over the hills. It seems there's so many of them they just multiply ! Imagine your ant hill there but that entire space you videoed just full of them only inches apart back to back ! We're the only house in the neighborhood it's embarrassing. My dad was supposed to take care of the yard, he said that was his job, but he's so busy with work he doesn't ever get to it !
honestly I'm not sure. I doubt this cooks them to death because they can leave the bed. My best guess is they go further away. I have acreage. I do not see new beds created after getting rid of one. Your question if valid for sure!
