Thank you very much for your interpretation of "I'm nobody". Maybe you'll like my setting of this poem, which I recorded together with my singing partner Laura in my little home studio. You can find the recording at this link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZCq4Tb-7wjk.html You can find a live performance of this song by Laura and me at this link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G-8DjozOnRg.html

One of my favourites. I am nobody are you nobody too? Then there is a pair of us, don't tell or they will advertise you know?

Is it "they'd banish us"or is it "they'd advertise us"?
@bruhnling33
@bruhnling33 3 года назад
@@mzmz8354 I've heard both, I think the original is advertise but saying banish makes the meaning more clear in modern English since how the language is interpreted has changed some since her time

I’m Nobody! Who are you? Are you - Nobody - too? Then there’s a pair of us! Don't tell! they'd advertise - you know! How dreary - to be - Somebody! How public - like a Frog - To tell one’s name - the livelong June - To an admiring Bog!

As a fellow lesbian who is also Neurodivergent I identify with this poem a lot. It makes me wonder what Emily was thinking about when she was writing about how no one could know who she really was. Was she living such a rich inner life that she didn't need anyone else? Was she referring to the women she had secretly dated and had fallen in love with? Or perhaps did she have that innate feeling of just knowing she wasn't like everyone else but, she didn't have words to explain it? I don't know but, I feel that she was reaching out for another person who was living in secret almost begging to find someone else that feels like no one special. Is she being sarcastic when she talks about how dreary it is to be a person full of clout, blowing their hole but not really saying anything of substance?

Thank you for your sweet interpretation of this poem. We need enthusiastic "teachers" to help us "get" the poem. I could not fathom Shakespeare....wish I had someone in my life that was a nerd of the bard. All the secrets and meanings of his props and prose..... Just all the little nuances of the stirred up caldron....that brew would just make more sense...and maybe get someone interested to investigate....but I guess that is a lot of work! I am up there in age...but have been "craving" poetry....better late then never....I will see what else your channel offers. What is the book you wrote? Thanks...

I do not mean to be contentious, but I must ask: if you wanted people to love frogs, would you DISSECT one for them? Or would you, instead, expose them to a beautiful living one. Poetry and logic...sigh...are not friends. It's like magic---if you explain how it's done, the wonder disappears. It's like humor---if you explain the joke, it isn't funny. You lost me with "presumably because the addressee..." I applaud your love of poetry, but...no, please don't think that killing and dissecting it serves it. It doesn't. You could, if you threw out the book of logic, talk about this poem in a wonderful way, and I hope you find your way to treating poetry with the kind of respect it deserves for the very nature of how poetry functions....

Great question thank you for asking it. I think that those lines represent fogs when they're making noise in the swaps and others watching them. Meaning she's making fun of the people who talk a lot, "making meanigless noise", are the center of attention and others, a swamp, admiring them. Maybe it's the equivalent of modern day Kardashians hhh they're in the spot light but it doesn't mean that it's a good thing or they're doing good with it. She's making fun of them and those watching/admiring them saying who could possibily want that.
