Hi Nigel, I am happy to have found your channel, exactly what someone new to aircraft modeling (just starting my fifth 1/32 kit) needed to achieve a running start. I was watching the Mark V build and observed that the prop blades in this kit seem to be of Mark I variety as the Mark V blades are more in the shape of a tall equilateral triangle and quite unique. Very much looking forward to more of your very informative videos and thanks for your efforts to educate we novices.

According to my old copy of Spitfire: Classic A/C #1 by Cross & Scarborough the tiny tubes just behind the exhaust on the model were actually 1.75" pipes threaded through the exhausts and took heated air into the wings to keep the hispano cannons from freezing up at altitude. Also, the dihederal was 6 degrees on the Mk1, so was probably the same on the Mk5 as well. Hope this helps. Am enjoying your build.

Sarah Bailey wow!! Thank you very much Sarah. I’ve now done the wing joint and hope to put the part 2a video up later. So, those tubes should be there, but I assume only on Models with Cannons? Thanks again.

Hi Nigel just come across this video perfect timing! I'm currently working on a 1/48 mk VIII from Hasegawa first time doing this size, I normally do 1/72 spits. My grandad was ground crew during the battle of Britain then went on to Lancaster's of 617 squadron. Apparently they put fabric tape over the gun ports to stop mud and grass getting into them as most of the airfields were mainly grassed

Nige Super progress on the Spit - just love the concept and presentation of the build video. I'm in the opposite camp when it comers to priming and always use primer. When shooting acrylic top coats, I always go with Mig Gray Primer thinned with Tamiya X-20A and when going with lacquer top coats, I go with Mr Surfacer 1200 thinned with Self Leveling Thinner. Keep 'em comin Peter

Another enjoyable build Nigel, thanks for sharing. I’m no expert, but I seem to remember reading somewhere, that the British fighters had the gun ports taped over to reduce the issue of icing or freezing of the guns, which was common at high altitude. The typhoon needed heating ducts run into the gun bays from the engine, for the same reason.

Thanks for the update on the guns Derek. So, unless the plane had just returned from a mission, the tape over the ports in the wings would be fresh? So, should I puncture the holes or not??
@derekdownunder3497
@derekdownunder3497 5 лет назад
Well I guess there’s no wrong answer to that, depends whether you’re trying to tell a story or not I suppose . Punching in the holes might add more interest, and if you were creating a re-arming dio, they probably should be opened up, ....... I’ve never seen a diorama with a figure actually re-applying the tape, but that might look pretty cool too. 🤔 Personal choice really.

Hi Nige Another great video. My long time understanding is like yours that the red gunport tape is to help prevent the gun from jamming due to icing. The spiral on the top of the instrument panel appears from photo's to be the wire that attaches to the gunsite. Many thanks mate. I truly appreciate your videos

Theres a channel called hpiguysworkshop, and its mainly car builds which come moulded in white styrene. He has always put an orange dye in his liquid cement to aid his eyes. I suppose the black will work better on the typical grey kits.

F15H3R M4N the way I see it is this... when we apply tet to a painted part the joint must be at least 40% paint so a few drops of xf1 in a bottle of tet won’t matter? It works a treat on long seams like wings and things!!

Another useful and informative video Nigel. I am no expert on the Spitfire so I can't offer any advice but can I ask what you consider to be a more accurate kit to build a Spitfire please ? Interesting comments on the Vallejo primer, I have had probs too especially with it clogging the airbrush! I'm pretty well versed in spraying and this stuff should be binned as you say. I'm also going to start using the Revell paint on a more frequent basis to compare with others I use and see how I get on. Cheers G

@NigelsModellingBench 5 лет назад
Hi G. The Revell paint is brilliant, to tell you how good it is.. I left some in my mixing pallet for about 30 minutes. i always do this then wash it off with hot water.. the Revell paint won't budge!! It's bloody hard wearing!! If you want to build an accurate 1/32 Spit, get the Tamiya 1/32 kit, any variant. All the others have something wrong with them.
@djbruzer12

Thank you matey, always useful to know and share experiences. I have used some in the past and also like quite a few of the Tamiya paints too which always seem to go through my airbrush far better. I will get around to buying a Spitfire at some point ( my house is on the market and everything is packed away ! Its like having my right arm chopped off not modelling !!!!! ). When I'm settled again I will get sorted in the meantime I'm finding comfort in watching you build G

Hi Nigel, I guess so, although I have seen a few pics in that book of clipped wing cannon armed Mk5's used in North Africa which MAY NOT have had them, the angles and clarities not being quite good enough to be sure! Possibly hot enough out there not to need them? Look forward to the next episode/s.

David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Sunday, 14 July, 2024) Nigel, you tell us in a video from 2019 that you just learnt to your surprise that 1.6% of your subscribers are females. I long have wished to have female friends who shared this avocation with me. At 7:15, you mention Airfix’s 1:72-scale kit of the Lancaster “Dam Buster” Heavy Bomber, and the Lancaster Mk.II Heavy Bomber with radial engines in lieu of Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines. I enjoy hearing this, for I understand only partially the RAF marks that denote the different variants of their aircraft. I have a keen interest in the de Havilland DH-98 Mosquito RAF Mk. IV Light Bomber and the Photo-Reconnaissance Aircraft (though for the latter, I do not know the mark designation), both variants amply swift enough to require no defensive armaments. I understand that Airfix offers a 1:24th-scale armed fighter-bomber version kit, and Tamiya’s similar 1:32nd-, 1:48th-, and 1:72nd-scale kits, all four of which I would like to build together in a forced-perspective ærial diorama, complete with identical camouflage paint scheme, unit markings, etc., for the same squadron, dramatising a close formation. I especially would like to find Mk. IV light bomber and photo-reconnaissance versions of these kits; or alternately, the means to convert the kits to the latter. I already had built Tamiya’s 1:48th-scale Mk. IV light bomber-PR kit as two of the bomber version (one landing gear down), and one PR aircraft, so I know of it. I also have seen the 1:72nd-scale kit of these versions. In a recent review of the 1:32nd-scale kit, I saw in the instructions booklet detailed line drawing illustrations of the fuselage that show those parts Tamiya had designed to allow for different iterations of the actual aircraft; from these, one reasonably can expect the manufacturer in the near future to issue a light bomber-PR kit similar to its smaller, older twin. Nigel, you tell us in a video from 2019 that you had begun a video build of the Hobby Boss Spitfire Mk.Vb (Supermarine Spitfire RAF Mk.Vb Fighter), choosing this particular one for your interest in a 1:32nd-scale brown and green Spitfire (I would like similar kits of the Mk I, Mk.Vc-well, whichever variant had the four Hispano 20mm cannons-and the Mk.IX, as well as the one with 1) the five-bladed propeller, and 2) the first mark with the Rolls Royce Griffon engine. I by contrast much prefer green and brown Spitfires Mk.Vc, in a series of scales), telling us that “this [kit] was in my stash. If I’d have needed another one, I probably would have gotten the Revell kit, although apparently, it’s got issues”, too. Well, this obviously requires a side-by-side comparison (one green and brown-the proper way, of course-and the other brown and green). Do any other model manufacturers offer a well made, new-mold Spitfire Mk.Vb/Vc kit? How many good-quality 1:32nd-scale Spitfire kits would this entail? Perhaps you could combine them all in a kit review. At 55:26, you mention what sounds like “Dzus fasteners”. I have heard of them, though I am unclear as to what they are, or their function. Is this to what you refer, please? At 57:16, you ask us of the aircraft model’s dihedral, and the gap at the wingroot. I suggest looking at actual Spitfires to assess the dihedral they have, and from them, evaluating any requirement for alteration. To my untrained eyes, and from what little experience I have had in looking upon actual Spitfires-a few scenes of low altitude flybys in Foyle’s War (BBC) (I had cautioned you it was not much!)-the dihedral looks fine; fill the wingroot cracks with strip stock, then putty the result to a smooth fairing into the fuselage. A capital job of it, so far, mate! Looking forward to part three.

Had a quick look at pictures of Spitfires sitting on the ground without pilots. They don't appear to have anything powerful centralising controls. Elevators appear down, although probably not fully down. Rudder fairly central but not precisely so. Ailerons not necessarily central either, but you don't want to know about that!

Chris Young thanks buddy. Good info.

Just in case you ever want to model ailerons off centre you will usually find the upgoing one is travelling further than the down going one. The idea is to reduce the secondary effect of aileron that yaws the aircraft in the wrong direction caused by the down going one entering the high pressure air below the wing and the upgoing one the relatively low pressure air above.

I remember while learning to fly gliders decades ago the instructor asking me to put my feet on the floor while rolling the aircraft to the left. Sure enough the nose shot off to the right. I've never forgotten!

I think those pipes on the exhaust are to do with ducting hot air to the canons. You can read more in this link: www.darwinspitfires.com/index.php?page=the-spitfire-vc-s-faulty-armament
