Description Source:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BurgerTime
BurgerTime (バーガータイム Bāgātaimu?) is a 1982 arcade game created by Data East for its DECO Cassette System. The game's original title, Hamburger (ハンバーガー?), was changed to BurgerTime before its introduction to the US. The player is chef Peter Pepper, who must walk over hamburger ingredients located across a maze of platforms while avoiding pursuing characters. The game was popular in arcades. In the US, Data East USA licensed BurgerTime for distribution by Bally Midway. The Data East and Midway versions are distinguished by the manufacturer's name on the title screen and by the marquee and cabinet artworks.
According to Twin Galaxies, the record high score on BurgerTime is 11,512,500 points, set by Bryan L. Wagner in 2008.
When Data East went bankrupt in 2003, G-Mode bought most of Data East's intellectual properties, including BurgerTime, BurgerTime Deluxe, Super BurgerTime, and Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory.
Gameplay
When Peter Pepper walks the length of an ingredient (bun, meat patty, tomato, etc.), it falls one level. If it lands atop another ingredient, the latter in turn falls one level. A burger is completed when all vertically aligned ingredients have been dropped out of the maze and onto a waiting plate. Once all burgers are completed, the screen is finished.
While making burgers, Peter Pepper must deal with three enemies: Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg. Enemies can be dodged, killed, or temporarily stunned. Killing occurs when an ingredient is dropped atop an enemy, or when support for an ingredient is completely removed and the enemy falls with the piece. In the latter case, the piece will fall much farther than normal, depending on how many enemies are on it. Scoring depends heavily on killing enemies. The more enemies killed with a single sequence of falling ingredients, the higher the score. Therefore, to obtain the best score the player must endanger Peter Pepper by allowing more than one enemy to move onto the ingredient the player is on, just before the player drops it.
Peter Pepper has pepper shots to shake on nearby enemies to stun and render them harmless for a few seconds. Extra shots are obtained by collecting bonus foods, such as coffee, an ice cream cone, or French fries, which appear in the center of the maze when a certain number of ingredients have dropped.
There are six screens of increasing difficulty, with more burgers and enemies, burgers that have more parts, and/or layouts that make it easier for Peter Pepper to be cornered and harder for him to reach the ingredients. Completing all six screens takes the player back to the first one.

Arcade's Greatest Hits The Midway Collection 2 for PC also had Burgertime in it, along with 6 other games (including Moon Patrol), but I think when Midway Arcade Treasures came along, they didn't have the rights to it. Burgertime is also found in Data East Arcade Classics for Wii, along with its sequel Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory. I'm enjoying these Let's Compare videos; I've never seen a lot of the versions for many of my favorite games. Thank you for doing these!

IMO having played recently and owning the 2600 , Intellivision , Colecovision and NES versions . I think that the Intellivision is the best . Looks aren't everything . The Intellivision has the most responsive controls . That little disc really stepped it up in this game . Nothing better than playing these on the original hardware . It's not just about graphics and sound .

The 7800 version shown here isn't the right version, it's a sequel called More Beef Drop with completely different and harder mazes and many more of them. Colecovision wins IMHO followed by BeefDrop, the real version either for the 8bit Atari or the 7800
@xeriland
@xeriland 3 года назад
Even the Video Game Critic agrees. He wrote, "BurgerTime for the Colecovision is easily the best home version I've played, and it even gives the arcade a run for the money. With its meticulously detailed graphics and arcade-perfect gameplay, I really can't find any flaws with this one. Unlike some lesser versions, in this game the pepper is "contagious" between bad guys, which is a good thing."

Yea whoever developed that colecovision version did a hell of a job. Its far better than the 5200 version, which was its direct competition at the time, and also better than the 7800 version which came out many years later. Sad, no telling how big they could have became if they would have kept their focus on gaming consoles instead of the far more expensive Adam home pc line.

The NES version was referenced in the Season 2 premiere of "Captain N: The Game Master." New cast member "Gameboy" is a sentient robot,, and he brought Captain N (as Mr. Hot Dog), Simon Belmont (as Mr. Egg) and Mega Man (as Mr. Pickle since he was with a green design for the show) to Burgertime. As the chef, he avoids Captain N's zapper gun (which shoots out ketchup instead of a freeze ray).

The music on the TI99 version resents every time it stops for a sound effect. That probably gets kinda redundant after a while.

Peter Pepper officially had a mustache in Japan and even in PAL regions. But North American distributor Midway made that redrawn version. There are some official sequels like Deluxe and Super versions also by Data East, as well as licensed versions by others. In North America, this arcade game, Bad Dudes VS. DragonNinja, the Caveman Ninja/Joe & Mac series, and some Neo-Geo games by Data East are the most commonly mentioned ones. In Japan, the home country of Data East, people mention a lot more than what North America mentions.

I think the gameboy one is the best port, the music is all there, the graphics are nice, you can tell you're looking at the lettuce, the meat, the pickle ect. it's not slowed down like some of the other ports pus it still has the classic charm unlike some of the weird modern remakes, plus it has the added benefit of being portabe on the gameboy!
