I still can't believe that LVO, the biggest 40k tournament on the planet is player placed. Don't get me wrong I know it's due to logistical needs of setting up hundreds of tables but it's so scuffed from a play perspective.
Yup, i pretty much use rule of cool for all terrain set ups in my local group. The big thing I need to pay attention to is what buildings count as blocking line of sight, ie) all first floor ruins are considered solid.
I dunno man, this is ultimately a hobby to me. I'm here for fun, occasionally my play group is competitive, particularly if adult beverages are involved and often results in somebody sleeping on a couch on account of consumption, which is entirely beside the point. We play at everybody's houses as time/opportunities allow, I'm single/no kids, so I'm a relatively frequent flier destination, but everybody's home is his castle, and he is king (for the sake of brevity, yes, she is king too as it applies) and if they have a new totally buggered layout set up, then I refer you to one of my favorite Robert Heinlein lines, "Soldier, shut up and soldier." Deal with it, the key point is this, you probably have a group of at least semi regular folks you play against that are either friends from every day life, or players who have similar goals to you, competitive, narative, beer hammer, etc, make a choice as a group and keep the junior soldiers latin motto handy, "Semper Gumbi, always flexible." Uppermost in your mind and you'll have way less gray hair at 35 than you would if you get your panties in a bunch over stuff like terrain...after all, it's always another learning opportunity
