What can you do to extend a steerer tube? Today I’m going to extend the steerer tube by 35 mm.
What you need:
Threadless converter 22.2 mm
Headset expander
4” 1/4" screw
1/4" Hex nut
M10 flange nut
The converter is too long so I ended up cutting 20mm of it.
The expander is an alternative of starnut and it's perfect for this setup.
Make sure to tighten the headset bolt first to preload the headset bearings and then tighten the stem bolts.
The steerer tube is now extended to the desired length.

Hello, thanks for posting your solutions! I've seen all three videos of yours. Do you find this last method more effective than the one from last year?

That seems dodgey AF. I need to do this, but not like that. I think that the extender quill should be wider so it fits more snuggly and doesn't wiggle around and then the allen bolt extends through the quil and threads into the star fangled nut. When it is tightened it wil thread into the star fangled nut and force the other end of the quill to push on the inside of the steerer tube. It would be true in the steerer tube and have a good grip from the inside.

I feel like using a high riser bar wouid be my preferred solution. Though I always enjoy these videos.

Riser and a 35° stem is definitely the best choice

What is the size of the adapter should i buy
@r_viana

What about cutting the bottom of the adapter and thighten it using a regular star nut in the steerer tube?
@ianmangham4570
@ianmangham4570 Год назад
You can do that instead of using the quil
@key39075
@key39075 Год назад
Star nut isn't going to hold it, it'll instantly be soon non-steering handle bar.

Hi may I know I'm using same this size 22.2 stem extension to threaded to threadless. So the headset and the spacer is what size I should buy?
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 2 года назад
Hi, you need 1 1/8” spacers.

@@DanyoSports This is the wrong type of convertor for a threadless ahead set. This is dangerous because you cannot tension the bearings. Those adapters are for headed steering stems only. You need to take this video down.

That isn’t safe, headset will for sure become loose and possible damage the frame. Not a good product, but I like the idea.

And how do you apply preload onto the bearings? This is extremely unsafe.
@rachmatt5082
@rachmatt5082 2 года назад
you didn't see the part where he installed the expander plug? or maybe you don't know what it does? This is safe.
@jonathandougherty3677
@jonathandougherty3677 2 года назад
@@rachmatt5082 The expander is just “pulling” on the stem adapter and not the steer tube itself. I understand that it is all effectively tied together by the adapter but unlike the adapter that is a wedge and very unlikely to come loose, the expander is just opening outward and not as efficient at staying tight. At that point, because the top cap is only connected to the expander, if it becomes loose then the preload on the headset bearings is gone and becomes a danger.
@rachmatt5082
@rachmatt5082 2 года назад
@@jonathandougherty3677 Yes the fork and the extender are solid. Basically it’s like using expander plug on non-carbon steerer. A lot of people says that it will work, but I much prefer using a regular star nut instead of expander plug. So the question is, will the expander stay tight in the steerer or will it come loose like you’ve said.

It's dangerous as. The handle bars could come off with anything goes wrong. While the old design is far safer. Bikes should be kept original for safety not to be messed around

This method is not safe. It only works safe with a thread headset.
