Let’s explore color analysis!
Shopping for fabric can be SO overwhelming, and figuring out my color season has helped simplify that process by highlighting which colors are best for me!
I am NOT an expert in color analysis by any means, but it has been a super helpful tool I've used in my creative process. Thanks so much for watching!

This is by far the most realistic colour analysis video I have seen and I love it! I love what you said about certain colours not being in your colour palette but totally uplifting your mood making it worth the wear and I think that's a great mentality to have.

Ok who else found this video after watching dozens of professional color analysts trying to explain this stuff and then only actually got it with this video from someone with no training, just color theory knowledge and knowledge of what's flattering!! Thank you this has been driving me nuts, feels like everyone describes "rules" but they're really loose with the language they're using, just feels based on vibe. Super clear from you though, thank you thank you.

Ah it makes me so happy to hear my video was helpful! You’re absolutely right though, I’m not an expert at all in this whole seasonal color analysis thing, but knowing color theory is super helpful! I’ve grown up painting, so that part comes pretty naturally to me, but I recognize people without that background can struggle to know what makes a color warm/cool/clear/muted, and need it explained. So glad to hear my descriptions make sense to you!

I immediately thought soft autumn when I saw you. Your eyes also come across as blue which is an eye colour that soft autumns can have but not usually for true autumns
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Год назад
It’s so tricky! I definitely agree with you about how my coloring comes across soft autumn because it doesn’t seem strikingly warm. I guess I imagine super warm autumns having olive green, hazel or amber eyes, so my grayish?greenish?bluish? eyes sometimes throw me off because they don’t seem warm enough for true autumn. I do have really obvious warm tones in my skin and hair though, so I think that may cause my overall appearance to be warm anyway. I think where I do sometimes think I could lean true autumn is in my contrast. I feel like my contrast is a little too high for some soft autumn colors, and more saturation harmonizes with it a little more. I will also say that I think my hair tends to look lighter on camera than it does in person, which may be why it seems like I may have lower contrast like a soft autumn. Either way, I for sure wear both and love both so much. It’s really fun to hear what other people think about it, since I’m still a little confused myself! 😂 Thanks so much for watching!

I got my colors done professionally and found that I am a winter type but more of a neutral undertone. My veins are green and I wore warmer makeup for years I also thought I was an autumn! I found out that I’m the type of winter that’s closest to spring (bright winter) so I can pull off spring colors sometimes. It’s definitely worth getting it done, I recommend House of Colour. I’m a sewist too and it’s been great being confident in the fabrics I pick.

Fun video, and pretty informative. My immediate guess for you was soft autumn. It might be that you're closer to true autumn during cooler months and closer to soft autumn during warmer ones - I know most experts say it doesn't shift, but as someone whose skin and hair also changes in cooler months, I know that's just not true at all
@madewithrach

Thank you!! I feel the same way! I sometimes feel like I’m not quite warm enough to be true autumn, but have too much contrast (when I don’t have a summery tan and natural highlights) to be a soft autumn. I know there are systems with additional subseasons that I want to explore more for this reason! I’ve heard of shaded soft autumn or soft autumn dark, and feel like that might be the sweet spot for me in between true and soft autumn! For now, I’m in the same boat as you. Just shifting my colors slightly between cold and warm months!

Enjoy your channel! Agree with those who say you may be soft, but from what I understand, it's how the draping against the skin that gives the true answer. Also, I've found that eye color isn't as important as the eye pattern (the pattern the iris makes in the eye). But you could also be a true autumn. Hard to say.

Thank you! Yeah it’s confusing because I think I’m soft in terms of chroma, but my features are more medium-a tiny bit deep, so if I’m going to wear soft colors, they either need to be lighter or medium-dark. I’ve heard some systems have a “soft autumn deep” or “shaded soft autumn” and I feel like those colors are pretty spot on! The eye pattern stuff is very interesting too! I’ll look into that!

Now that she’s grown out her natural silver hair, she still looks amazing in winter colors, but goes more for the icy ones rather than the jewel and deeper tones. @@joywhitley3141 hi. According to some analysts that I've watched, we can become cooler / more muted/ softer as we age. They also say that you'll stay within your main season (the 4 seasons) but your subseason could change. However, W & Su are both cool, so I think it's possible for a W to become a Su as they age. I've also read a comment elsewhere that the person was analyzed in the 80s as a winter. She was re-analysed now that she's gone gret, and she's now a summer. I think what's not possible is for a true winter to become a true spring or autumn (can't change undertone). However the transition seasons (DW & DA, SA & SSu, etc) can borrow colors from each other's palettes.

Hello!!! Thanks so much for watching! It’s so surprising to me that body typing and color seasons aren’t more prominent in the sewing community too! Since we have full control over all the details of the things we make, finding ways to understand what suits us best seems like a normal part of the process to me! It seems like these two niches are minding their own business, but together, they could be MAGIC!! I’ve only read a little bit about essence typing, but would definitely be curious to dig in a bit deeper. As far as the fruit typing, I’ve definitely looked into that, but from my understanding, it’s more about balancing out features, and kibbe is more about embracing and accommodating them, which I think I prefer! That being said, I will absolutely be talking more about this stuff because I think it’s super interesting and SO helpful! Thank you thank you!
@kat_thefruitbat
@kat_thefruitbat Год назад
@@madewithrach I completely agree! I think it comes down to the huge misconception that color analysis will “put you in a box” by limiting the colors you can wear. Also, I think a lot of people had received incorrect analyses in the past when all of the details were still being fleshed out, but nowadays (with super helpful videos like yours!) it can be very easy to conduct your own DIY color analysis and come up with accurate results. Plus, more accurate information on olive skin and deep black skin has just recently been made available as well; olive skin had always been seen as having a warm undertone, and deep black skin had always been seen as having a cool undertone, but it’s now understood that both types can lean either warm or cool. You’re right about the fruits system- while I’ve always utilized it as another way to get creative and experiment with proportion and silhouette, it does typically (and unfortunately) end up being presented to the world as a tool for dressing in a way that either “balances” or hides your features, or conforms you into looking like an “hourglass figure”. I am a spring but have pink-based foundation, because my under-tone is warm but my over-tone is pink, important to differentiate. I think testing with gold, silver and actual colours near the face is the most reliable way to tell which colours are best. My colour analysis was done with only the four seasons, and the three subtypes confuse me a little. I only know that I need clear colours (can`t go muted at all) and that mid to light colours are better than dark. A mid cobalt blue is in my wardrobe and it looks good because it is clear, which for me is more important than warmth. If you love the true Autumn colours, wear them, you can definitely pull them off.
@madewithrach
@madewithrach 6 месяцев назад
Thats so interesting, and totally makes sense! I know the same can be true for olive toned people too. My mother in law has a cool undertone, but a warm overtone, so while she’s a winter, she’d need warm foundation and can also look really great in some warm colors as well. I’m pretty sure I’m just warm/warm, and it explains why I’ve never looked good in cool pinks! I think the 4 seasons is great for having a good understanding of the general colors that work best for you, and the subseasons are great for trying to pinpoint your BEST colors in a season. I have noticed some of my personal best colors happen to be from different subseasons though, so it’s definitely not perfect! That’s great you know clear is the most important thing for you. I’m still trying to figure out if warm or muted is more important for me. It can be tricky!
@junimondify
@junimondify 6 месяцев назад
@@madewithrach Yes, that's exactly what I mean! And I've found that the vein test for olive toned people can be misleading as well. I have no idea what sub-season I am, but my best colours are pretty easy because of my hair colour - clear green, clear mint, clear peach or coral, clear yellow. Maybe if some of your best colours are from a different season, it's worth looking at what that season and yours have in common (for example, they are both muted) and that is a clue to your main characteristic?

Thanks so much!! I’ll have to give yours a watch! ☺️ Color analysis can be SO tricky! If you asked me to do this on someone else, I’m sure I’d struggle a bit! 😂
@lillyallen2153
@lillyallen2153 8 месяцев назад
As a color analyst in training I agree with everything you've shared until we get to chroma. Eye color cannot determine your season the way you did it, and I would say by looking at your hair and skin I see lots of brightness and no hint of gray or muted tones! I would say just by looking at you that you are a spring. HOWEVER, because of the way color theory works its practically impossible to determine your season without any kind of comparison, that's why professionals do draping. You have to see how your coloring interacts with other colors. So I couldn't say for sure what your season is without draping you in different colors.
@madewithrach
@madewithrach 6 месяцев назад
I would absolutely love to be professionally typed someday, but it’s been fun trying to figure it out for myself for now! I think perhaps the way I think of chroma pertains more to painting, and doesn’t translate as well into seasonal color analysis, so that’s good to know! I’m definitely planning on doing a draping video at some point, because I’ve done plenty of my own draping at home, and didn’t do a good job of explaining that in this video. In terms of the grey and muted tones I feel are present in my features, I can see what you mean while watching this video by thinking I could potentially be a spring. However, I think my camera settings are making me look more clear than I am in person! I think I shot this video on auto, and I should’ve done it in manual to show the truest colors possible. I’m sure that makes a big difference! Some spring colors tend to overwhelm me and reflect onto my chin, and I feel like my features stand out more next to more muted colors. I could totally be wrong though! Anyway thanks so much for watching, and I’d be curious about your thoughts whenever get around to posting a draping video!

I love the explanations you gave, when modeling the clothes. I have always had clothes I wore all the time because I could just throw on and go, that got worn out fast. Then, there are clothes I ALWAYS have, because I have to spend lots of time putting on makeup and accessorizing. They are usually colors I love to look at, just like you said! I still have them but, when I shop now that I know my season, I try to resist buying tops and dresses in those colors, so I’m not late because I’m stuck in the mirror, trying to make it work. I buy a phone case, computer case, handbag or open cardigan in my beloved Fall colors and pair it with a Spring green or orange shirt that coordinates. Instant easy mornings! You are not getting my dark red or rust colored dresses away from me, but I wear them when I have the time…and I have to admit they’re not really doing me any favors. You would look amazing in medium medium rust dress, my muted salmon dress (at least it has brighter orange flowers), and the dark red flowers on taupe I won’t get rid of…or the sage. Lol. I wanted to be Autumn so bad! I do love my new Spring colors on, though! I have always loved green. I just wear lighter, brighter Spring greens now. I was happy to find out light olive is a thing!

@@madewithrach Thanks for the info! Since Spring is your sister season, you could probably borrow some colors and pull it off! Or is yours sister season Soft Summer? If you’re Soft Autumn, I wanna say you have two sister seasons…I have no idea which subtype you are…just a guess, since you look good in a lot of Soft colors, but you look good in True Autumn, too. I hope you’re true, because you like it. If not, I’ve always loved HOC’s advice to wear a dress or top in the bright color you love, with a muted scarf near your face (for example). It's so tricky!! I definitely know I'm not a deep autumn, but it's so hard to choose between true and soft! I sometimes feel like I must be soft since I have a cool eye color and can pull off some summer colors (mostly summer greens and some taupes) but so many of those colors seem too light for me since I have more medium contrast. I know there are some systems with 16 seasons, and one of them is soft autumn deep (shaded, dark? or something like that?) And I feel like those colors are some of my best! It's kind of just the more neutral leaning, softer autumn colors, but a little on the darker side, which goes more with my contrast. I dont entirely know what I'm talking about, but maybe that would be something for you to look into considering we're having a similar struggle! haha Anyway, thanks so much for watching!!
@jagodoszka662
@jagodoszka662 10 месяцев назад
@@madewithrach yeah, I heard about this system with 16 seasons and it may be the case. I have dark brown eyes, but I have medium brown hair with reflects of blond and I'm not so intense like deep autumn. Like a bit lighter, muted. So colors close to winter palette are not the best options for me. Maybe I'm toned autumn (or something like that, I'm not sure). But anyway, it's fine to mix the colors somehow and I'm borrowing from warm and from deep autumn, sometimes even from soft one. And I think it's possible that you are tinted autumn - lighter one.

I feel the same way about some summer colors for myself too! I know true autumns are supposed to borrow from true spring, but I generally gravitate to muted colors over just warm colors, so summer it is! It’s so tricky because sometimes I suspect I could be a soft autumn for this reason. I feel like I’m not quite warm enough (with blue/green eyes) to be true autumn, but I have too much contrast to be a soft autumn. I will say though, unfortunately I look pretty terrible in cool muted pinks, so when I’m borrowing from summer, I’m careful to stick with greens, blues, and some berry tones! I’ve also read a little about shaded soft autumn, and think I may fit somewhere in there too. But yes, I think that’s definitely played a part in nailing down my intensity! Cool seasons are so beautiful! So jealous you probably look fabulous in black! Haha I have to put in some extra effort to look alive in it, but it’s still one of my favorite colors to wear.

The light green dress looked blah on you (it's a nice dress, don't get me wrong, but it didn't bring out your sparkle). I think a dress in olive or army green would look better on you. I thought I was a soft autumn at first, but once I started paying even more attention to how colors look on me, I really do feel like more saturated (but still muted) colors are the way to go. That green dress is definitely more of a soft summer color, which I initially thought I could borrow from a little more. I still LOVE that dress and that color, but you’re right, it could totally suit me better if the green were just a little different. I wonder if you would look at a different chart.. the one you have is the classic one I've seen lots of in older books, I'm not sure if there are different training styles, but I've been watching the videos from Italian women in melbourne, and they use a chart that goes in the order; soft autumn, deep autumn, warm autumn, and then occasionally a true autumn if you look best in all three types together. I think you might be a warm autumn, rather than a soft or a true autumn.. so warm autumn also borrows from warm spring sometimes.. which explains why you can take some of the brighter more fun saturated colours but not quite as dark as deep autumn.. and it explains why soft aumtun is too pale because soft autums sister is soft summer which would just be too pale for your skin.. So because you are blonder with bluer eyes, I think you are on the gentler side of warm autumn.. the blonder/blue eyes colouring is often mistaken for soft, and its assumed a brunette is a darker autumn but its not so much that. Its more to do with how much oomph your overall harmonious colouring has 😊 I hope that helps you and anyone else who comes across this video, it sounds from your later comments that you figured out you might be a more middling autumn and less soft, so I hope you find your way to that term warm aumtun.. its explained so much to me to realise I need to pull collour from warm spring as my sister, rather than the other autumn colours first 😊

Well done Rachel, I really enjoyed your informative video. (I just thought that some years ago nobody put a disclaimer at the beginning to not offend anyone watching.😅) Anyway, according to the color palette, hair color and eye color I too am an autumn type, but funny enough quite a few colours from all other seasons compliment me aswell, with spring tones being the least complimentary. The skin undertone wrist test doesn't work on me, because my veins appear like a mixture of green and blue, but since I also use makeup with a beige undertones and tan relatively easy I figured I'm warm to neutral. What do you think is your Kibbe body type and did you intuitively dressed for it before? It makes perfect sense to know about both, one's seasonal colours and the Kibbe body type, when one's serious about sewing, since it makes such a big difference. Keep up you're useful content, I've subscribed. ❤ from Germany
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Год назад
Thank you so much!!! It does sound like we’re pretty similar! I also have blue and green veins, but I have pretty obvious yellow undertones. I’d say bright winter colors probably look the worst on me, and I wear spring colors if I’m dressing bright because at least the warmth doesn’t clash with my skin too much! And about kibbe- I’m still not 100% sure, but I have a feeling I’m some sort of natural. I definitely have openness in my shoulders and upper back, but don’t check off all of the natural boxes. (I wouldn’t say my bones are particularly blunt or robust looking.) I could be a DC I guess, but with the width, I can’t really imagine I fall under any of the other types quite as well as Natural. I’ve been told by a couple people that I look taller than I am, but FN lines seem to swallow me up sometimes. I have some curve, but I don’t think I have enough to require accommodation like an SN. I know pure N isn’t really a thing anymore, but I feel that that’s what I would most align with! Anyway, I think my main takeaway is that open necklines are best for me, and if I do have a closed neckline, to make sure there’s enough room in the shoulders to not pull or make me look constrained. High necklines are super trendy right now, but I definitely have to be careful about them. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!!! I’ll definitely make a kibbe video soon! ☺️

I’m pretty sure I’m not SN, but don’t know if I have quite the vertical to be FN either! I know I can always just follow the pure N recommendations, I just know if I’m trying to make a choice that’s officially David Kibbe approved, I’d probably go with FN, and keep in mind that I’m not super vertical, and can still be overwhelmed by way too much fabric.

I would love to see your make up routine, I'm a true Autumn with very similar colouring to you and although I had a professional colour analysis done 2 years I still haven't sorted my make up!

You have to drape colors on you and compare them to determine your season
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Год назад
Totally agree! I should’ve emphasized that more in this video. While I haven’t formally draped myself to find my sub season, I had done enough at home draping to know I fall into autumn by the time I shot this video! I definitely plan on making a draping video to narrow down my sub season though. Seeing how colors actually interact with your face is so important!

@Rachel Stewart I had my colors done This past Friday and found I'm a Deep Blue Autumn in house of color (Dark Autumn in other systems) and it almost perfectly matches the chestnut color in my swatch fan (shows all subseasons of Autumn). My vote is. You're definitely an Autumn. That color is fab on you 😍 and now I need it for myself 🤣

I liked the softer color on you, it seemed to make your skin glow more, where as the darker one kind of stole the color from your face. That's just what I see through the camera but maybe it's different in real life.

It’s so funny, because I totally agree with you watching the video footage, but it’s so different in real life! I had my camera on auto everything, so it adjusts and isn’t accurate 😂 I feel like I should do a full draping video with my camera in manual mode just for fun, now that I’ve learned my lesson. Either way, I love wearing both of those colors! Thanks so much for watching!

I'm always so confused by this stuff. My veins right at my wrist in the middle are blue but on the sides of my wrist are green. My skin in general appears yellow but I've heard of just being yellow dominant without acquiring warm undertone. My eyes are blue grey on the outside rings, brown on the inside with a gold band running through the brown. My hair is very dull and ashy.
@madewithrach
@madewithrach 10 месяцев назад
Yes! The vein test is super hit and miss for sure. It definitely doesn’t work for me either. I know I have a warm skin tone, but I definitely have some blue veins. You sound pretty similar to me too! I do have some warm tones in my hair, but it tends to be more ashy right at my root. Having a cool eye color confused me at first too. I feel like I’m our cases, draping is really the best way to figure it out! My guess is you’re probably either a summer or an autumn! And in terms of warm vs cool skin, I know people with olive skin have a cool undertone and a warm overtone, so they usually fall into a cool season even with yellow tones in their skin. It can be so confusing! All of what you described sounds SO similar to my husband too, and I think he’s probably some sort of summer. He’s kind of a chameleon though because of the warmth in his eyes. I feel like he looks good in everything! Haha

That’s what I’m kind of thinking too!! I know people say your season doesn’t really change with age or anything, but I feel like I can totally borrow more from soft autumn, and even soft summer when I have a tan and my contrast is lower! Thanks for watching! ☺️

I’m planning on making a video allll about it because it has been quite the journey trying to figure it out. Haha Right now I’m 90% sure I’m a natural of some sort. If pure natural were still part of the system, that would for sure be my pick, but if I’m trying to follow updated recommendations, I’d have to pick between fn and sn. I’m just about 5’6 inches, and my friends often assume I’m taller, and I definitely lean more angular and blunt than soft and lush, so I’m confident I’m not a soft natural. I’ve experimented a bit with DC as well, but think I have pretty clear width in my shoulders, chest, and back, so while dc does sometimes work for me, I always have to be mindful of my width, which always brings me back to natural lines.

Vein method definitely did not work for me. I have both blue/purple and blue/green veins, but more blue/green, and I am not warm toned. I’m a soft summer, so more cool/neutral
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Год назад
Yes exactly! I have a mix of blue and green veins, and I’m really warm toned, but that’s interesting that you’re cool toned and still has green veins! My sister in law is in the same boat as you. I think the vein test is especially unreliable for people with olive skin and deeper skin tones. It so surprising to me that it’s the classic, most commonly suggested way to find your undertone! I feel like draping is definitely the way to go in most cases!
@SoMagicalMichele

Not sure if you decided which sub-season you are. I have noticed that a lot of the professionals will do a sister season comparison. From my side of the screen, it seems you are a little more intense than soft autumn. I, myself have had a struggle because of a lot of meaning I put on the colors from some systems that link personality to colors. Lots of messages from my mom when I was a teen also caused me to not trust myself. The things I loved on me she hated. I think I'm finally starting to figure out what my season is.
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Год назад
I’m so sorry that was your experience growing up, and so glad you’re finally finding out what makes you feel like your best self! I totally agree with you. I think the soft autumn colors still look pretty good, but a little more depth and saturation is a little better for me! The camera settings in this video make me look even less contrasted than usual, so you’re definitely right in saying I’m more intense than soft!

Idk I think soft autumn makes you look super muted. I think true autumn is more of your color and makes you looks younger and just “ woah”
@madewithrach
@madewithrach Год назад
I feel the same way sometimes! I definitely feel pretty good in a lot of soft autumn colors, but I feel like my contrast is too high for some, and they can make me look a little washed out. I always gravitate toward rust oranges and medium olive greens, and while soft greens and oranges are fine on me, the more saturated ones make me more sparkly. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly why, but I feel the same way! Thanks for watching!! ☺️

A couple of other people have said the same thing! I think you’re right. I do think I’m first and foremost muted, and warmth is definitely present, but not most prominent, which I’ve heard indicates soft rather than true autumn.

Oh yes I completely agree! I guess what I was saying is that black is timeless and I think it can look classy on anyone. Actually I see it the other way around. The lighter one matches her blush, but it doesn't bring out the vitality of her deep overall skin colour or her eyes and lips, which is how you find the overall vitality and harmony. The first one is a nice colour on her, but the second one brings out her overall harmony
