It is impossible to know which individual video will ever be successful, but there are many known ways to help a channel grow. Unfortunately for me, I don't follow many of those rules, because I think that they take away from the product we as creators are providing, the video. I can't stand the whole "make sure to comment, subscribe and smash that like button" thing. I don't like to interrupt the video with unrelated integrated sponsored adds. Most of all, I don't like to upload multiple short poorly produced videos every day. My product is a once weekly, 20 to 30 minute episode, with a storyline and interviews, produced to the highest quality I can manage in one week. This model works well for audience retention, but Google does not push and promote a channel with what they consider infrequent uploads. I hope that the edition of consistent twice weekly uploads will help, but please be sure that the Saturday uploads will always remain full length and fully produced.
Thank you all for enjoying the show. :)
If you have been enjoying this channel, and would like to help support the upcoming projects and videos, please consider taking a look at the Patreon page or the Merchandise line.

Perhaps Emi would be up for making Wednesday Shorts on what its like coming from Japan and living the nomad lifestyle in Canada. Get her perspective on the landscape, the travel, vehicle, all aspects from the viewpoint of someone from Japan on al the cultural and lifestyle differences of this nomadic lifestyle. Bonus if she does it in her native Japanese with English subtitles, I'm quite certain her countrymen back in Japan would be very interested in her experiences, plus there is the "cool" factor of hearing another language.

I second this. She is not accustomed to this life, so there is a lot she may think of that has become invisible to Dustin over the years. A good '3 minute video weekly' concept so she is not too under pressure either. Translation software has come so far now that she can even say very specifically what she means.

The strength of your channel is YOU. Don't make the mistake of wandering off to a new style. More content with the same style and presentation is the ticket. People love your personality. As for content, I think a lot could be done with the editing process. Take us by the hand and work through your editing. No travel channels teach editing skills and thought processes. Lots to talk about there. Along the way you can show material that gets edited out and then there's outtakes. Lots of dialogue to be had as you weed your way through visuals. Flashbacks, story within story, pips. But please keep the same vibe. Yours is the best.

Justin First off, your videographer/filmography skills are world class. You have the talent to actually make a A grade movie. Your content is so good, and the scenery so stunning, that an occasional 30-45 minute video may be in order, as its good enough to captivate your audience for the duration. Also your music selection is fantastic. Additionally, we would love to see any side content suggestions, like: 1. Emmy doing a Japanese short cooking show in adventure prep meals 2. Justin doing more cooking meals 3. Local folks interviews 4. Historical data of area explored 5. Develop your own outdoor gear brand, and field test it, like D.A. Outdoors 6. Field test gear honestly 7. Do more fishing 8. Gathering food and preperation Actually Justin, your channel, skills and talent are already world class. Filmography, music selection, and topic are already incredible. In time, you may need to farm out the editing, so that you and Emmy are not overloaded with uploading and editing and spend more time in the field. These are just suggestions, but we can hardly wait for new content. In our opinion, you are like top 5 channels we anticipate seeing each week. Were here for the duration, keep going, well grow with you, thanks Bill & Leslie

Bud....Heres my 2 cents. Dont over think this. Eveything youve done, up until this point has been superb. Youve brought quality and full length episodes almost from day one. And everything youve done up to now has worked, and worked well. I personally dont think you need to change anything. If it aint broke, dont smash it into the wall, and then glue it all back together, so then you can call it rebuilt, new and improved. Youve done so many things the right way, because you did it your way. And Sir, your way works and you have 250k subscribers to show for it. You are growing and maintaining your viewers. And a loyal fan base is more important than those channels who gain subscribers over night because they paid for the algorithm to push their videos, but then after they get going, they have low viewership numbers. You will have a million by next year. Your channels name, is not a facade, unlike so many others. You are out here living an adventure every single day. Not just traveling, getting some good shots, and then at night when cameras are off, getting spa treatments with your feet kicked up, sipping a martini. Everything about you and your channel is 100% as real as they come, good or bad.. The best thing you do that most of love, is your interaction with the people in the different places you go. You are giving people a voice, that they would never have had before meeting you. You are giving them a chance to tell everyone and show everyone where they come from and their history as only they could. Its a way for them to see that they are not alone in this giant world, and you just became a bridge to that large gap, that connects us all and brings us closer together, no matter how remote or far off the grid they live. All of these things are what makes your channel so great and different. I think what you are doing is so very important. You documenting history and documenting for the future, in places and people that would otherwise be overlooked by the world. You've created something special, Dustin. Stay on the path. The only thing i would ask, is to do more interviews, and dive into the history of some places a little more. But otherwise, keep doing the things you like and enjoy. If we could get 2 full length videos each week, that would be awesome, but dont over work yourself either. Life is to short, not to enjoy the ride the whole way through. P.S. come to Charleston and ill show you history and culture that doesnt get shown on TV or on travel shows.

Dustin your channel is one of my favorites. I have followed you for years. Yes, YES, the production quality is amazing. It is clear that you put a lot of effort into your content and I love it. You take us places that most of us will never get to experience with our own eyes and that is a beautiful gift to have and to share. The Workshop Wednesdays, adding more content is a great idea to boost your channel. I like the idea of a live stream Q & A. More personal contact with the viewers, consistently, would give a good push. Even doing live stream with the locals and Natives/First Nations who you meet along your journeys to do Q & A with them would be fun, informative and educational. You can really do anything and I will watch. I love what your doing and will always support your channel. Love what you are doing and keep it up!! You are doing great.

Let's not discount your amazing talents as film maker / photographer. I really enjoy watching the videos where you interview people up in Canada and Alaska. They are so interesting to listen to. I'm pretty sure you could ride around take pictures and put together a 12 to 15 minute video of that and we would all watch . If quantity is the goal then get busy and flood the channel. I don't think you're capable of making a bad video, by default your worst video should be better than 99% of what is on the tube. I'll say it again I am impressed with the content you put out.

What drew me to your channel is the cinematic atmospheric experience of exploration. You put a lot of beautiful scenery in your videos, and it's nice to learn more about the region I grew up in. You don't overproduce and try to make things more dramatic than they are, and I appreciate that. I watch a fair amount of overlanding channels, and one thing that's common is that trip videos generate fewer views than build videos. What keeps trip videos interesting is learning about unknown places, and you do an excellent job of introducing people to back roads and waters. I've seen many channels grow doing one video a week. I don't think one video a week is a broken formula. What I do think that may be holding back your channel growth is video length: few people will decide to watch a half hour video from a channel they don't know, about something they don't know about. A lot of channels make shorts to catch attention, like videos previews. If you started making shorts that open with a beautiful cinematic and aural atmosphere of Saturday's video, it would catch people's attention, then you could do a voice over after a few seconds and say where you were or what you were up to.

1. More Mick. (Even just doing this direct to camera…) 2. More Moho cooking show (what is a tuna rice ball? How are you serving all of the crab/fish that you froze? What staples do you stock, how has that changed with Emmy on board?) 3. Without being intrusive, how does Emmy fit in what I would describe as a 1 person rig? (Water consumption increased, clothing space decreased, did she seamlessly blend into how you store dishes, as an example of cohabitation issues) 4. Organization - time & space. (Incl. the time for charging & refueling.) 5. Route planning (past for security…) but going remote how do you plan to be able to get water/gas/food/mail? 6. How often are you stopping to get drone footage, how is the RU-vid video capturing planned? 7. Black tank? How do you plan to dump - since you “never” go to RV parks.

Hey Dustin, my husband and I love your channel, we watch every week! We would love if we could get to know Emmy a bit more, maybe she could share about her background and be featured more on the episodes so we can connect with her, if she's up for that. Also I think any behind the scenes stuff is always fun. Something like "a day in the life of a nomad", living in the Truck, sleeping, cleaning up, packing gear, planning your adventures, cooking, life in close quarters, is all stuff we would love to see. And of course we love your Truck build and maintenance videos, as well as Moho Cooking Show, maybe Emmy could show us how to make some Japanese dishes. You have so many interests, maybe you could do little short episodes about your various interests, like gold panning, videography, bike riding, etc. Also maybe a walk down memory lane, you could do clip episodes from your past trips, and you could share behind the scenes things that happened on your trips and what you've learned from each place you've visited. Thanks for all your hard work, we can't wait to see what you do next! Safe travels. 🙂

I love your work and it is obvious the amount of time you spend on editing and the quality of your cameras. I love all the ideas listed. Saturday vids stay like they are. You could do a short on any and all things people have listed. Grocery shopping, when remote how do find the next store or gas station. What restrictions are there for us in the lower 48 to know about coming into Canada. Many rv’ers are traveling through CA to enjoy the beautiful scenery and then travel onto AK. I personally would like to see some tech tips about flying the drone, how you move footage to computer. Also, using go pro and settings. Camera and lenses you use and basic info. All of these extra ideas people are giving you could be a “short” or a 10 to 15 video on a topic or thought. Most importantly, as seasoned as you are about your content you wouldn’t need to edit. Aside from Saturday content, we would enjoy seeing you just talking, showing things you do, how to’s, and being relaxed. If you are doing these types of things just use the go pro to film, no editing. Just film and send it. We will love it all. Love you and all your great work.

First, thank you for your time and energy you spend taking and showing us viewers places we will more than likely not see ourselves. Amazing content; brilliantly made everytime! Have you considered doing Lives? I don't know how feasible this is given your remoteness and travels, but it would help bring engagement and consistency to the channel. Cheers!

I like the comedy skits!!! I also like when you interview the locals.. I would like to see your lady to be more interactive in the vids. We should see and hear more of her. She is with you by they way. Any way, I'm glad that you will be available at lunch time on Wednesday. Love your content. Really enjoy seeing Canada. Such a beautiful place.

Hey buddy, I'm very much a casual viewer but, with your passion for putting out full production videos on Saturdays why not leverage the content that's being "discarded" and put together a behind-the-scenes miniseries? I'm sure you have hours of unused footage that you could put to use showing bloopers, mishaps, candid moments or even how-to videos like rolling camera shots, angles you like to ascertain, things you look out for that the untrained eye wouldn't pick out. Just my two cents, if it's not your schtick then no sweat but, as someone who cannot work on the road/enjoy the nomadic life (at this chapter in my life) I often think about what goes into setting up some of your drone shots and I think it would be cool to see that from your perspective, or at least what goes into it!

I only just found your channel a week or so ago but I've loved every video I've seen so far! I love the exploration, crabbing and fishing, and i really love the cinematic shots you take. Also a big fan of the stories you tell of the history of the different places you visit. Super interesting to learn about all these seldom-heard stories. I also love your sense of humor! Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Dustin, How about a video about Emmie (I think that is her name - your travel partner.) It doesn't have to be too personal or private, but since she is spending quite a bit of time with you, maybe we could get to know her a little better. We've gotten to know you some over the years, it would be nice to know something about her. But whatever you put on the channel, my wife and I will always be watching.

Hey Bud, I think it would be rad to see local food stops, restaurants, and cafes, especially if they have regional grub or grown local ingredients and find out a bit about them. Local crafters and artisans who could maybe do a workshop with you.

Anything but fishing! I love your channel. I've been watching since about 3k subs. But I could care less about fishing and I hate having to skip through those parts. I had to stop watching Mav because he built his channel up as an adventure channel then pretty much switched it to a fishing channel.

Maybe you could pull some of the ‘finds’ that you normally include in the full videos. Not the whole thing like old towns or places but like the old cars in the woods - do a more lengthy look at them and throw out questions - always generates comments. Same for old equipment or machinery and one off buildings or just anything noteworthy that is usually an aside in the main video. Some would be good for Shorts, too, if you are looking at throwing some out to gain new interest. 👍🏻

You know we love your stuff Dustin. Everything you do we watch. We appreciate the work you put in. It's always professional with great music edited in along with the 2nd unit style shots and drone work. A lot of channels are doing shorts as teasers. They seem to go over well. The interviews you've done were thorough and enjoyed. Along with your history reseach. Is interesting also. Here in America we don't know a lot of Canada's past. Mick's comedy is always welcome too. Emmy is a fun distraction this season also. We think your doing just fine and give shout outs to everyone to watch your stuff. Hopefully it's resulted in some new subscribers. Cheers Buddy 👊😎👍

Love when Mick makes an appearance. Always makes me snort with laughter! Workshop Wednesdays don't have to always mean the rig. Right? Why not behind-the-scenes moments? From how you tackle little problems before they get bigger, to how you film, the equipment you use, setup and takedowns, the programs you use, how you find the perfect music to go with the clips of footage, and how you fine-tune. Maybe add how you plot your navigation on water to how you come to your decision on what road to take via your Backroads map book. I think it would be awesome to see how you come to your decisions and you're taking us along on the ultimate journey! You'd have all of us tuned in! Those of us who sit back with that second beer and enjoy the ride while leaving the navigation up to you, and then those who'd "backseat drive" and yell at their screens as if they expect you can hear them. 😁 See? You'd have all of our attention! And I miss the MoHo Cooking Show! Who says you can't give us a new variation? Like ... Roughage in the Rig? 🤔

I'd like to start by saying that I love your content and feel like what you produce and when you release is perfect. I'm sorry to hear that you're not being 'seen' because you're not doing what RU-vid wants you to do. That said, there are a lot of things I'm curious about and would love to see covered in short (5-10 minutes, is that short?) uploads once or twice a week. Do folks live near where you are filming/visiting/adventuring? If so, what is it like to live there. Do you drink? (pretty sure you do as you just enjoyed the beer you offered me) What do folks in the area drink? Or what have you tasted recently that you enjoyed? What do you do to manage the bugs?! How could a person without an overlanding rig like yours make the journey to some of your favorite spots? Can you re-visit some of your favorite spots in a short format video? I'm thinking a 5 minute recap of one of the previous adventures. Do you meditate or have any other mental health routines? One of the things that really makes me feel like I have a connection with you is your calm and instructive personality, despite some pretty significant setbacks. Is this just who you are naturally or does it take practice/effort to present yourself to the world as you do? What does the mundane, day to day look like? Where do you wash your sheets/clothes? What do you do while you're waiting for your boxer briefs to dry? (or are you a tighty-whitey guy?) And lastly, what are your dreams? What do you aspire to? Do you find this cycle fulfilling or do you want to explore something new or different? The world is HUGE and there are so many destinations one can adventure to.... How can WE help make those adventures happen for YOU? (besides the regular 'like and share')

Maybe now you have a rode to help it will lighten the load.. lol.....I can sympathize with you my friend. at 50 I went full time RU-vid and got my channel to have some traction then after 2 years being a nomad I came off the road and do it part time now. I make money otherwise but still enjoy shooting vids, abandoned photography, living in my rig and overlanding. Mostly East Coast U.S.A. I would be completely happy with 1 video a week. I have been watching regularly for about 3 years. I liked the truck build better than the repairs and rebuild.... I always like the abandon stuff. I really liked the mine explore a while back....the one with all the equipment. Ebike stuff is cool. I appreciate your production quality. Totally right about quantity verses quality.. But what you gonna do. I wouldn't change a thing.

I don't know if I told you this yet, I may have, but I'm loving the 4k-ness brother! I suggested it a while back and I'm super glad to see that you adopted it. The wifeypo and I watch on the big screen and it makes a huge difference in picture quality. I know it may be asking a lot, but ever improving 4k-HDR would be a sick goal as well. We appreciate the work you do brother! RU-vid is our "watching TV" for the most part now and it's people like you that we look forward to seeing videos from.

Second more use of maps! As a foreigner all these names mean very little to me, and I don't always feel like opening Gmaps myself (Google be throttling my map experience for some reason..) It would mean more production, but one of those oldschool map tracing segments each week would be super cool!

I’ll now have two days to look forward to your videos. I agree with a lot of the other comments/suggestions. A “teaser” of what’s to come on Saturdays would be cool, as well as a “ask me questions” video. Maybe a “can you guess where the next video will be set” video? And perhaps a video with additional suggestions from locals as to stuff/places you need to explore?

I'm sure you'll hit some successes and some snags, but in the end you'll find the groove and sail along as happily as you have been so far. I wish you luck my friend. Your rig is exactly what I had in mind 5 years back and I still plan on building one soon. I don’t think there’s anything I would do differently. Other then use top quality freeze dried foods not meals but freeze dried steak , lamb , chicken, etc. lightweight and no freezer space needed. The feeling of seeing an empty freezer wouldn’t be an issue with a good amount of real food in dry storage. Another option I would design is a walk through to the cab . Keep the videos coming. I’m planning my getaway in my dreams as my wife of 34 years has stage 4. Naturopathic therapy is costly. Life has taken us down a different path

I don't know if you'll read this or not, but I don't know if I agree with you about RU-vid valuing quantity over quality, from what I understand, they want content that a viewer will watch and keep watching, i.e., watch 2 or more videos in a row from you. Your videos are great and I was literally just binge watching them (something that would have made that easier for me would be a binge playlist with all Saturday episodes **edit** sorted from oldest to newest so it will play in order **). From what I know which isn't much maybe this is Micks cousin Jack talkin here but I think the Wednesday content may be hurting you in a way that's not really seen. Well, kinda seen in this way, you have videos on Saturday that get 100+k view then Wed you get 20-30k (this is probably your regular base), Just Jack thinkin here but if you have someone that get's a hold of the Saturday video and likes it and then the up next video is you talking about a power station they are gonna click off most likely. I know your trying to give props to the sponsor but I think maybe the ad would do better in the video that people can skip over if they want, if those are ads I'm not sure or maybe it's just you talkin about what you got... Maybe you need to make a second channel for the extra content say Destination Adventure Unplugged, (someone that cruises on Holland American don't really want to go on a Carnival Cruise I mean I do but I'm Jack remember) instead of adding it to the main channel. Maybe Jack and Mick should sit down and talk hahahaha, this is probably too long but I'll see if it sends. **edit** You can also kinda see it on socialblade when you started the truck build your views per week started falling off and subscribers per week also started falling off, but then when you started back up with your regular videos you can see it pop up again but slowly falling, for what I believe is the reason above.** FYI I could be way off here too BTW Jack isn't the brightest crayon in the box! (just putting that out there for you to think about) I also feel that Subscribers these days on RU-vid are just a vanity metric anymore. Cheers Jared Second thought I wouldn't listen to anything Jack has to say LOL, the Outdoor Boys have millions of subscribers lol
